View Full Version : Number 10
JeffBoy15 13-11-2003, 09:51:AM Okay, I think we've all noticed how the number 10 is usually reserved for the "best" player on a given club. And we've all accepted it as tradition and it's no big deal. But how did this start? Or if it had no real starting point, how long has this tradition been alive? Anyone?
Jedi Mind Trick 13-11-2003, 09:54:AM actually the number 10 isn't really given to the "best" player on the team. the continental (europe) and universal sense of the number 10 shirt was given to the playmaker. except in england, where the number 10 shirt is usually given to a playmaker or a striker.
-William- 13-11-2003, 09:55:AM Pele got in on a WC (dont remember which one), he got it randomly though, the Brazilian coach just listed a number and a player and Pele got number 10
Also Maradona supposely made number 10 a famous number
Good Question, I have always wondered that too
Maybe because of Pele
or maybe, its because usually the perfect score is 10?
PScott 13-11-2003, 09:58:AM It started from the point when all the positions had a number. Like goalkeeper has 1, defenders have 2345, and so on. The 10 was the number 1 striker on every team, so basically the best player on each team. Then over time, the best player was known as a playmaker and thus we get the playmakers of today wearing 10.
Can you believe i Just BS'd that whole thing?:crazyboy:
JeffBoy15 13-11-2003, 10:00:AM Yeah I was thinking Pele and Maradona too. But I had no idea Pele just got it randomly. So I guess it just caught on from then on, huh?
Hugo-45-Viana 13-11-2003, 10:00:AM Well, 7 is also a very famous number, Figo/Beckham/Best/Ronaldo(well, technically he is famous)/others.
It's basically just by positions to be honest(or at least I believe it is), and the fact is the best players on a club usually play in those positions.

I could only tell because it sounded so repetative and it kinda looked like a combination of what all the guys said above. Altough that does make sense, even though it's quite a BROAD way of putting it. (H)
Yeah the "best" numbers are
3, 7, 9, 10, 11
Jedi Mind Trick 13-11-2003, 10:10:AM those aren't the "best" numbers. those are just the numbers that the most famous players have worn.
Voltaic Borusse 13-11-2003, 10:12:AM The number 9, occupied by Ronaldo and Koller, among many other players I can't think of now.
:D
yeah you are right
I used a bad choice of words
those are usually the most famous numbers;)
Run DMB 13-11-2003, 10:12:AM How about #8?
Hristo (H)
And Damani Ralph (future legend).
9 -
Ronaldo
Kluivert
Crespo(ARG.)
Inzaghi
Koller
some I can think of...

Jedi Mind Trick 13-11-2003, 10:19:AM #9:
vieri (italy)...who i believe is the prototypical #9.
i think ruud where's #9 for holland.
PScott 13-11-2003, 10:30:AM all the number 9 is, is the number 1 striker on most teams. Thats all. The number 7 is usually a winger like beckham figo etc.
As time goes on, the numbers will have less and less significance. Zidane is the best number 10 in the world, and he wears number 5 for heavens sake!
Jedi Mind Trick 13-11-2003, 10:32:AM well he took the number 5 shirt because there weren't any other numbers available. figo had the 10, who wanted 7 but raul had it, and raul wouldn't give it up. but you're right about these "traditional numbers" eventually losing their significance as more and more players transfer to other teams.
and the traditional #9 is your prototypical out and out striker.
shokz 13-11-2003, 10:33:AM I forgot we haven't even got a player wearing the #9...
It would please me if Ole Solskjaer makes his comeback with the #9 shirt. :ewan:
mufc_daddy 13-11-2003, 11:14:AM Hey shoks who is that player on ur avatar?
Have u got a link for that clip?
Cheers mate.
Famous numbers -
Shearer - 9
Linkeker - 10
Robson - 7
:rockman:
Dagoods 13-11-2003, 11:49:AM Well, 7 is also a very famous number, Figo/Beckham/Best/Ronaldo(well, technically he is famous)/others.
Sorry boys but the #7 BELONGS to GARRINCHA
#14 Belongs to CRUYFF
# 9 Belongs to RONALDO
# 10 To BOTH PELE AND MARADONA
# 3 PAOLO MALDINI

I have to agree.
mufc_daddy 13-11-2003, 12:41:PM Unless United sign "an out & out striker" and give him the number 9 jersey, i think Ruud should get no9 and the new playmaker (VDV for example) should get the number 10.
If we get Anelka then he should get 9.
Soccerage reckons United want Anelka, anyone got any other links regarding this (Shokz?) ?

Even if he were linked with United, I'd be against it.
mufc_daddy 13-11-2003, 12:45:PM Blimey that was quick.
I like him as a player but he's a selfish brat. Fergie would send on him on his bike after the first row.
Fernandez 13-11-2003, 02:20:PM that doesnt mean all number 10s are strikers...wasnt there a goalie wearing number 10 unless he is a goalkeeper/striker.... and someone from olympiakos wears the number 1 and is an outfield player.... its what the player believe.... ;) i wouldnt ming playing as the number 10 in footie....:p

3, 7, 9, 10, 11 3 and 11 appeal to some people as these are players who play on the left flank and most likely can dribble the ball quite well..
ruud_boy, shokz avatar is of Mancini scoring for Roma in the Rome derby.. It was the first goal..

bloody cheeky flick wasn't it. :)
If History has told us anything, it is that the best Number is the Number25
CAPISH!
mhflierman 13-11-2003, 06:49:PM Basically before there were any names on the backs of players, the numbers were just corresponding with the positions on the pitch. In Holland 10 has always been the playmaker, central midfielder, behind the striker role. A bit like Van der Vaart is now.
But in recent times, those numbers mean ****. Players just get assigned or choose a squad number.
PSVFOREVER 13-11-2003, 07:21:PM You are all so stupid. #2 is for the best player:kader: Cause I play with that:p ;)
Punkt 13-11-2003, 07:34:PM Benfica number 10 is Zlatko Zahovic because he is the playmaker not the best player. even Dean Saunders were number 10 at Benfica.:crazyboy:
whuahu 13-11-2003, 08:14:PM joe cole has #10 at chelsea, and he hardly gets to start.
ive always wondered why because i think that #10 does actually signify the best player in a team.
claupastore 13-11-2003, 08:25:PM its true what PScott said. believe it or not
every position had a number. and then the second team started from 12. why else do you think that second goalkeepers have #12 on their back? and the reserve defenders usually go from 13 to 15 or 16 and so on....
the number 10 fever started after maradona and others like platini, pele's time was way before that.
Sanel 13-11-2003, 10:30:PM everyone please give me your opinions on this one... you are the striker on your team and you have to choose between #10 or #11, which one would you choose, and would you rather be a striker or a playmaker? :)
bbranco10 14-11-2003, 01:53:AM The most famous players usually wear number 10. but other numbers follow along too. Look at most teams and see their number 10 hes probably a great player.
Gerrard 17 14-11-2003, 03:42:AM My fav # to play with is 17 or 21 :hump:
I'd choose 10 after those two.
Pferd 14-11-2003, 04:04:AM what are the numbers "supposed" to mean?
i know #1 is the goalie (of course) and #2 is the central back... but what are the others? I think #10 is the central mid... who would generally be the "playmaker" anyway...
I hadalways worn number 10
until I really appreciated that i was the seventh(as in genreration;) )
(I am Antonio the 7th)
so i switched with my friend to get number 7:rockman:
claupastore 14-11-2003, 04:19:AM 1 gk
2 3 4 5 defence
6 7 8 midfield
9 10 11 forwards
Pferd 14-11-2003, 04:22:AM thanks

Caupastore already answered, but here's a more detailed reply:
It all started in the 1930s when Arsenal manager Herbert Chapman decided to print numbers on the back of the shirts, so that when a player saw which teammates he had around (=which numbers he saw), he could adjust his own position accordingly.
Originally the numbers were assigned to each position in the 2-3-5 formation, thus it looked like this:
1.Goalkeeper
2.Right-back
3.Left-back
4.Right-half
5.Centre-half
6.Left-half
7.Outside right
8.Inside right
9.Centreforward
10.Inside left
11.Outside left
Later, new formations became popular (such as 4-2-4, 4-3-3 and so on). For example, if you switched from a formation with 3 defenders to one with 4, you would move one of the wing-halves (number 4 or 6) to the defence, which explains why one of the centre-backs in today's 4-4-2 formation often has number 6.
The number/position relationship may differ slightly from one country to another, but if we didn't have fixed squad numbers, most English teams would probably assign the numbers as following (in a 4-4-2 formation):
1.Goalkeeper
2.Right-back
3.Left-back
4.Central midfielder
5.Centre-back
6.Centre-back
7.Right midfielder
8.Central midfielder
9.Forward
10.Forward
11.Left midfielder
...whereas an Italian team would look like this:
1.Goalkeeper
2.Right-back
3.Left-back
4.Defensive midfielder
5.Centre-back
6.Sweeper
7.Right midfielder
8.Central midfielder
9.Forward
10.Playmaker
11.Forward

Diego Armando Maradona
JeffBoy15 14-11-2003, 06:37:AM From all the feed back I've been getting, this originally started with numbers being assigned to certain positons. So do you uys think this is how it should be now? Should we go back to only assinging numbers to positions, as apposed to players?
Fernandez 14-11-2003, 06:38:AM it should be players to choose their own numbers.... barthez didnt change the #16 shirt for france did he?

nah. back then, if i'm correct, the starters always wore 1-11. a sub for one game would wear 12-22 and the next game if he started, he'd get 1-11 for that game, since he started.
nowadays, i think it's better off letting players choose the numbers. some players have become synonymous with certain numbers and quite frankly, i think it's kinda cool how players have different numbers and all that.
Dumisani 14-11-2003, 08:42:AM I play in the #10 shirt, because I can play as a striker, right-wing or just behind the strikers:rockman:
santino 14-11-2003, 08:57:AM i can't believe im not seeing baggio in this whole 5 pages of this thread..the players that made the number 10 famous were...Pele, Maradona, and Baggio...and since then...its been goin to whoever wants it.
