England striker Smith arrested
Leeds United striker Alan Smith has been arrested over allegations that he threw a bottle into the crowd during a match.
Smith was arrested on the day he was called up to the England squad for Sunday's friendly match against Denmark.

The incident is alleged to have happened during a Carling Cup match against Manchester United at Elland Road on 28 October.

A police spokeswoman confirmed a 23-year-old man had been arrested and released on bail.

She said a file would now be sent to the Crown Prosecution Service who will decide if Smith is to face any criminal charges.

Apology to fan

A spokesman for Leeds United confirmed Smith had been arrested.

During the 3-2 defeat which was screened live on television Smith was seen to throw an object off the pitch.

He later apologised to a girl who was in the crowd.

In a statement he said: "I have spoken to the family of the young lady concerned to make sure she is all right and I have apologised.

"The family and I believe this is the end of the matter.

"I hope this will not damage the special relationship I have with the Leeds fans."

Sad how all these weird things are making the news nowadays. Since Leeds doesn't seem to be getting any publicity by playing well, I guess they can go ahead and do it by getting their players arrested. ;)

its stupid friggin politics is what it is.
The matter was done and dusted to all concerned. Smith apologised to the fan and the fan was happy and didnt press charges. Now a full month later, completely out of the blue the bloody yorkshire police decide they would like some publicity and the FA is on a witch hunt for any player that so much as sneezes on another that they trott over and arrest him...its ludicrous.
The timing can be nothing but vindictive, why wait till he gets his call up, prepares, jumps in the car and nearly makes it to meet up with the side...then they call him up and drag him back...:kader:
