Its a very hard thing to do. There arent many true dives these days alot of it are overeactions and all round just being soft

people please get your facts right... a dive is when he jump without contact make... eg bergkamp did that in the fulham match which he is lucky to escape a yellow card... what i see the curringham incident was that curringham has a hand over him and he just being pull down by that... and btw, things get balanced up as we should have a penalty on the boro match anyway...

Fernandez

Managers are trying to give him a reputation for diving as it seems that is the only way they are able to combat his lightening pace and smart turns around the area. If the managers are able to make the ref think he may be a diver then it will make their CBs job alot easier. The ref of the Boro game admitted afterwards it should have been a penalty.

It isnt just managers, the fact that he's so quick means that any contact will result in him going to ground with pretty big impact. Thats not his fault though. And its unfortunate that he's been involved in so many penalty incidents, because naturally he will get a reputation from it.

I think it says a lot that he's been fouled a lot as it shows defenders find him hard to play against. I just hope referees are aware of this.

VanTheMan
01-12-2003, 07:15:PM
actually like ogsimon said it is the referee's fault.
there is not any so generous type of player out there.
so the referees come to fault.they should get extra training in terms of how to recognise dives.
i think 'pires' can teach them well

or kleberson in that match...his was a shocker, good that the ref just ignored it

Oddly enough pundits were recently saying he was too honest and didn't make a big enough deal of the fouls against Manure and 'Boro.
Tough job being a pundit

ahem!!noodle head is a sinama.weak and falls easily.
i would say that both are not frequent divers.they twist and turn so much that a blow of air would make them fall.
on the other hand pires is strong and does not twist and turn.................

Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier has jumped to the defence of teenage striker Florent Sinama-Pongolle after Birmingham boss Steve Bruce accused him of diving to win a penalty during Sunday's clash.
Bruce was fuming at Pongolle after the Frenchman won a penalty to draw his side level before they went on to win 3-1.

Houllier has reacted to Bruce's comments and insists Pongolle is definitely not a diver.

"What's being said about Florent is very unjustified," said Houllier. "Florent spent so much time on his back because he was fouled so much.

"There were some bad tackles on him, but I didn't say anything at the time. I'm absolutely infuriated by the lack of grace. I like Steve Bruce, but on this occasion he should have avoided comment.

"First of all, it was a penalty. The defender was right on top of Florent and he couldn't move.

"Second, I think Steve has a short memory. Last season we were denied two blatant penalties away at Birmingham. I can send Steve a video of the match if he wants.

"What really angers me is that many managers want to comment so much about my players all the time.

"I haven't commented on the antics of Robbie Savage or the tackle by Damien Johnson, have I?"

Pongolle has found himself involved in penalty incidents in the last five games and Houllier believes that all the offences warranted spot-kicks.

"There have been five so-called 'controversial' penalty incidents," added Houllier.

"Look at them again. Was it a penalty against Fulham? Yes. Manchester United? Yes. Blackburn? Yes. Middlesbrough? Yes. Birmingham? Yes. Why? Because the boy is so quick the defenders can't catch him.

"Don't worry. Florent won't get an unfair reputation. I can remember people used to say the same things about Michael when he was first starting in the game. They don't now."

Too ******* right, well said Gerard. (Y)

I never said he was or was not a diver, so I don't know why your making the quote look as if I said he wasn't a diver.

That 'they're small so they go down easy' (that eddy made) is bullcrap. If it was true than Jeffers isn't a diver, and he dives ALOT.

I'm smaller than Aliadiaire (weight wise) and i stay up when people slam into me.

Size is no excuse, if you're a cheat then you're a cheat. Thats all there is to it.

After seeing the highlights I'm not so sure it was a dive, but what it wasn't was a penalty. I think Bunghole does go to ground too easily, but that may be on account of his stature rather than flinging himself to the ground, although from the replays of the Birmingham incident I can see why some people can think it's a dive, but I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt.

From the Houllier quote, I reckon he's got some points but I've seen 2 of the penalty shouts which Houllier claims should have been given (United and Birmingham) and all I can say is no. Neither are penalties imo.

However, the ref must've lost his guide dog for the minute of Liverpool's goal. Hammann somehow got away with taking a throw in about a meter in-field, and then the penalty. No wonder Birmingham feel robbed because they were reportedly the better team up until that point.

fact heskey scored a potential goal of the year candidate against his team prolly rubbed fat head in more than he could handle

As Steve Hunter commented during today's commentary during one of the many times Bruce had a moan...
