Hugo Viana seems to have stated his intent to leave Newcastle during the January transfer window.

BBC Link (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/n/newcastle_united/3252932.stm)

"I don't feel well physically or mentally. My last two matches were dreadful," the 20-year-old told Portuguese paper Record.

"I've got to find another club if I want to play in Euro 2004. Any club will do. I just want to play."

anyway I'd sad to lose him ... coz he's a quality player. But if he wants to go there's not much we can do to make him stay. Just hope he'll get some action B4 Xmas and do well.

How much did Newcastle end up paying for him? I know it was a fair bit wasn't it?

even if he goes out of newcastle i don't think he will be on the euro 2004 since the portuguese team has too many players for his position.

Cant really blame him. He never gets time to play, his fault mostly cause he isnt performing but now he needs to go to a smaller club and regain form

If you put Zidane playing on the left wing do you think he would be great? That's what's happening to Viana in Newcastle. Just because a friggin player is left footed doesn't mean he's great of the left wing... geez Bobby get a grip.

Newcastle style of play isnt the best for him either, they defend too much.

More like we dont defend enough!

I don't blame Viana to want out, hes been sitting on the bench while racist thug Bowyer has been playing, what gets me even more annoyed is that Bowyer was playing on the left against Wolves!!!!

I'd love him here at Old Trafford, but I think our midfield would be too over-crowded.

I'd like to see him back at SCP.

Good on Viana, I'm surprised he didn't take the interest from Juventus when it came. It's obvious he hasn't adapted well to English football, he'd be excellent in Spain or Italy. England sucks for exciting players. I've only seen Ronaldo and Giggs be the only good exciting players in the EPL, and there's a reason for it. Heck at least in Italy when the attack starts it doesn't go back to the midfield in 5 seconds.

I think Juve still have an eye on him but I don't see him in the starting roster at the moment. They could buy him and loan him to another Serie A team.

Can he play behind the strikers or he's better as a left attacking midfielder?

The only reason he didn't do well is because he plays in a position that is not adequate to his very own idiosyncrasies. Come on, if you're left-footed, slow but a great passer with fantastic open court vision, good technique to CONTROL and pass the rock but not to dribble past opponents, where do you think you should play? Left wing? NO!
Man, Robson might as well ask him to wear a pair of gloves and shove him between the posts!

I don't understand how a club can spend that amount of money on a player and then bury him on the bench or in a position that's not his... :kader:

Man he's not a left attacking midfielder! He sucks as a left attacking midfielder!

You surely know how Rui Costa plays, right? Then you also know where Hugo Viana should play. ;)

Thanks for the info. I put left mid because I only saw him play this position with Newcastle. Your right, he's more adapted to play behind the strikers.

He doesnt get enough playing time .. thats his main reason of wanting to leave NUFC

i would LOVE it if he came to arsenal. what i want badly (a leftfooted skillful player playing for arsenal) and what the club needs (someone to partner vieira and not to be afraid going forward i.e. NOT silva/edu)

He meant that Viana is a center not a left. Robson thinks because Viana is lefty that he can play left mid. And he was making a comparison to Zidane.

Also to SB9-yeah you have your preferences of people you'd like but who will actually want to go?

Viana could play anywhere in midfield :|

Left, Right, Centre.

I've seen him play on the right

Any player can play anywhere in the midfield, or as a defender or a striker, ever thought there might be a difference between playing and playing well?
