USA Supporter 14-12-2003, 03:58:AM Leicester seems to be interested in a bunch of MLS guys. They had Mathis in for a tryout, and now they are trying to get Ruiz on loan? It also said that Leicester was scouting Bocanegra.
I think Bocanegra will definitely get a contract in Europe. I would be shocked if he resigned with the MLS.

That won't happen.
SB9Dragon 14-12-2003, 04:40:AM IMO Rivaldo isn't old enough to quit Europe and come to the US. He should stay in Europe or go play in Brazil while he still plays for the NT. Then maybe after he quits he could be considered a factor. But now with him still in NT contention his wages and demands would be way to high.
Anywayz I think Mathis should definately quit the MLS and hit Europe, preferably of course the EPL or SPL where I think he would have the easiest time adjusting.
Anywayz I think the Revs could use another defender. How about Llamosa for Bocanegra, Run? :funny: :p
#1 Stunna 14-12-2003, 05:05:AM i would either like to see a good American player (not like that Daniel Hernandez guy, if thats even his name) go play in the Mexican league...por a decent Mexican player play in MLS (not like Hernandez or Campos who were way past their prime)

Yeah I'd like to see that.
By the way the LA Galaxy's Antonio "Chivas" Martinez is on tryouts with Atlas. This is from Tino Palace's MLSnet.com column:
"THE NEWS: “Chivas” Martinez is reportedly training with Atlas. So in the InterLiga, if Chivas wins Group A and “Chivas” and Atlas win Group B, then “Chivas” and Atlas will play Chivas.
Got it?"
He's a good player, very quick and a good dribbler but lacks a little something since he never achieved star status in MLS. His 2003 season was especially disappointing.
bjmenge 14-12-2003, 06:45:AM What should Columbus do to turn things around?
That’s the million-dollar question. There’s as much talent in Columbus as anywhere in the league, but a rash of injuries, bad luck and poor performances in big games have hurt this side over the years, which is why they still have yet to play in an MLS Cup.
The foundation is there with Kyle Martino as the focal point of the offense to build around. The problem might lie in having three of the league’s top strikers in Brian McBride, Jeff Cunningham and Edson Buddle. It’s simply a luxury that isn’t possible to have in this league, due to the financial structure.
Cunningham has been looking for a suitor overseas, having trials with Eintracht Frankfurt of the German Bundesliga and Club Brugge of Belgium since the season ended. If he decides to stay in MLS, perhaps Columbus would be better off trading Buddle. The 22-year-old striker is coveted by many teams, and could bring Greg Andrulis and his staff another midfielder or defender to round out the lineup.
With Clint Mathis not expected to be back, Steve Jolley and his $135,000 contract being traded to Dallas, and the possible waiving of Richie Williams, the MetroStars have some money to burn and need scorers. Being from New Rochelle, Buddle is a local product, as well, which makes him that much more attractive to the MetroStars, as well, and would make sense as someone to bring in even if it means trading away another young prospect.
I swear if we trade Buddle, especially to the Metro****s, I'll quit being a Crew supporter, and join Run as a Fire fan.
No, I wouldn't. I'm not that stupid. :mrpimp:
bjmenge 14-12-2003, 06:47:AM Stunna, you can have Daniel Hernandez in Mexico. He's worthless and I hate the ****er. :p

Who would MetroScum trade for Buddle anyway? Pope? They can't afford to lose another central defender. Guevara? Cowlumbus already have a good playmaker. Clark? That would be a stupid move by Metro. The rest of the team is made up of mediocre players and young prospects. To get Buddle, Metro would need to trade two players and a first round draft pick at least.
I could see a Clark for Buddle trade though, with a draft pick involved. Cowlumbus really need a player like Clark. But who are Metro gonna play at d-mid?

Convey plays for DC United in the MLS. Tottenham signed Convey during the summer but he was denied a work permit so he was forced to stay with DC United.

Beneficial trade for both teams. The Crapids have two quality goalkeepers, so they send one to Dallas who need one. In return they get a second round draft pick and some extra cap space.

Fulham land US star
EXCLUSIVE by Graeme Bailey and Chris Bergin of ussocceruk.com
Skysports.com can exclusively reveal that Fulham have sealed a deal for American defender Carlos Bocanegra.
The Chicago Fire stopper has been looking for a club in England for the past few months and now a move to Fulham has been agreed.
The MLS Defender of the Year has had his work permit granted by The Home Office and he is now free to finalise his move to Loftus Road.
"The player has been granted a permit to play in England for Fulham," a Home Office spokesman told skysports.com.
The Whites have agreed a deal for the defender, who had also been linked with Leeds United, after his contract expired with Major League Soccer in America.
Fulham manager Chris Coleman have already brought Bobby Petta to the club during the transfer window and now he has bolstered his defensive options with the arrival of the 24-year-old US international.
Bocanegra did not automatically meet the criteria laid down by The Home Office, but a players' panel gave the move the green-light after concluding he was of sufficient calibre to play in England.
bjmenge 09-01-2004, 12:30:AM I suppose I can live with Boca playing for Fulham. Certainly better than him signing for Leeds, or some other club I utterly hate.
Chelives 09-01-2004, 01:28:AM Whats he like, is he any good??
bjmenge 09-01-2004, 01:35:AM He's one of the best American defenders there is. I believe he's won the MLS Defender of the Year award twice, and he is becoming a regular in the back for the U.S. National Team. A very good buy, in my opinion.
shokz 09-01-2004, 01:37:AM Did he even cost Fulham a penny, see'ing as he is out of contract with MLS, or is there a compensation fee involved?
bjmenge 09-01-2004, 01:44:AM I don't think there's a compensation fee to MLS, unless the player is still under contract. So I'd say it was a free transfer. I wonder what his wages will be.
shokz 09-01-2004, 01:50:AM Good steal by Fulham then (Y)

Caponedawg 09-01-2004, 02:03:AM Yes. Boca is also very dangerous on set pieces in the box. If he can get his head to the ball look out. Also Peter Nowak is now the coach of DC United.
Hendrik 09-01-2004, 02:15:AM I've heard Bayer Leverkusen's Jan Simak wants to move to the MLS to restart his career. :o

Clint Mathis to Hannover it seems.
Boelman 09-01-2004, 10:33:PM Bocanegra is one of the hardest players i have seen in the MLS. One time he knocked a kid to the ground who was a rookie and stood over him and said "welcome to the MLS". He is a tough player and will be a good defender in the premiership. The premiership defenders are all about the hard knocks and tough tackles, so he shouldn't have too much adjusting to do.
Boelman 09-01-2004, 10:34:PM Does anyone know if Steve Herdsman is coming back to play for the Colorado Rapids at any point, or any team in the MLS. He was a qua;ity defender for them at the time and could outrun any attacker in the league. I believe he was the fastest player in the MLS for the two seasons he played.
bjmenge 09-01-2004, 11:53:PM Steve Herdsman? I don't think I've ever even heard of him.
Boelman 10-01-2004, 06:17:AM He played for the Rapids the season before last and did quite well for himself. For a while the Fire were trying to buy him. I think he is coaching right now for a university team in Michigan somewhere but was wondering if any fans knew if he was coming back to play.

U serious? Bocanegra said that :funny: He's a beast :o :mrpimp:
Boelman 12-01-2004, 07:33:PM Yea, he is a crazy player when he goes up against you. He isn't the kindest player on the field but then he is a defender and has to be. I've played indoor with him in chicago once and he is a beast.

true, but it's not like options are unlimited. sunderland's better than staying in the mls though.
Run DMB 13-01-2004, 07:33:AM Mathis seems desperate to play in England. So much so that it seems he'd rather join an English D1 side than a German top-flight mid-table team. He probably hopes Sunderland will get promoted to the Premiership, but there's nothing that can guarantee that. And even if they do get promoted, their stay in the EPL will likely be limited to one season.
PScott, how confident are you in that rumor? ;)

PScott, how confident are you in that rumor? ;) Well if Hannover really did have interest in Mathis, then Mathis could very well just be visiting Sunderland to speed up the bosses at Hannover. He's a free agent(so to speak) and he is letting the clubs know he has options. That way he wont get low-balled in his contract.
pretty. ;)

Anyway I wish Convey would go to Europe. If not England then maybe Germany or even France. I think playing in Europe would help him become a better player for the National team.

American International Carlos Bocanegra signs for Fulham...
Fulham Football Club has today announced the signing of American International Carlos Bocanegra on a three year deal that will see the player at the Club until the summer of 2007. Bocanegra, a left sided central defender, joins the Club on a free transfer from MLS club Chicago Fire where he was out of contract.
The 24 year-old Californian graduated from the University of California in Los Angeles in summer 2000 and immediately signed for the Chicago side where, during his inaugural season, he was named the MLS Rookie of the Year. In both 2002 and 2003 seasons, he was named in the MLS Best XI Squad along with the consecutive title of MLS Defender of the Year.
Carlos has become one of the core members of the US National Team having played regularly since 2002 and was nominated for the Player of the Year award for 2003, losing out to the more customary striker nominations which consisted of Landon Donovan and Brian McBride.
Manager Chris Coleman commented:
'I have seen Carlos play and I could see that he has great potential. He reads the game well and is very skilful and strong which are the prime attributes of a defender. He has a great track record at International level, so I have no doubt that he will acclimatise to the Premiership fairly quickly. I am looking forward to him joining us.'
