FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk forward Oleg Venhlinskyy has been voted Ukraine's Player of the Year for 2003.

The 25-year-old Ukrainian international topped a poll of coaches, journalists and fans to claim the award. Venhlinskyy won 963 points in the vote, with AC Milan striker Andriy Shevchenko second on 660 and FC Shakhtar Donetsk captain Anatoliy Tymoschuk third with 309 points.

Dnipro going well
Venhlinskyy's club Dnipro are in third place in the Premier League at the winter break and will play Olympique de Marseille in the UEFA Cup third round.

How could Shevchenko not win? Granted, I don't know a lot about Ukrainian football, but isn't he the only player from Ukraine that would be considered a really, really, REALLY good player? He's in sensasional form, right?

Oh...I just read the story again...maybe he's not popular among the Ukrainians? But why? Or are they just stuuuuuupid, and don't know anything outside of Ukraine?
