there's no such thing as luck, or is there. it's like most things, basically only a word.

i dont quite believe in success or good things not due to my abilities or efforts coming my way. how can i expect them to happen when ive no control over how they happen? it's a fact not many of us can live it. otherwise, ladbrokes ;) , would have been out of business a long time ago. goes without saying that im pretty much not a gambling person. all bets are off too. footie matches, horses; ya name it - nothing i deem too safe to bet on. there's no way we can influence the outcomes of events that rely solely on chance. that's why they call it the 'luck' of the draw. that doesnt mean not taking risks. but those i take are coldly calculated.

what annoys me is how easily people blame undesired outcomes on 'bad luck'. a shot hitting the crossbar in footie at a crucial junction in a match isnt bad luck - the player just wasnt fit and clinical enough in his finishing * close the door on yer way out ivanhoe son :P * missed a cracking goal while yer in the crapper? or narrowly avoided a direct hit from a 'pie in the sky'? more like coincidence of good and bad timing. not luck. what if there are too many coincidences? surely luck or divine intervention had something to do with it? nah..i cite the law of averages as my defence.

still i shouldnt be too harsh. theres no harm in dreaming. after all, there really are too many things beyond our control these days. everywhere ya go, someone is always trying to get ya to do what THEY want. but that doesnt mean we cannot control how a situation develops nor have to accept any bad things that may happen. i have always believed in leaving nothing to chance, whereby impeccable preparation and having a spot on attitude are essential in achieving a target, whatever they might be.

there are really two types of men in the world when it comes to dealing with bad tidings ( have ya quite figured out the meaning of 'tidings' dan? :p ) suppose there was a house full of rare paintings and sculptures and fine old antiques. and suppose the man who owned the house heard there was a monster of a hurricane headed right at it. one of those two kinds of men just hopes for the best. the hurricane will change course he says to himself. no right thinking hurriane would ever dare wipe out all these Rembrandts, my two Degas horses, my Kackson Pollocks and my Paul Klees. Furthermore, Gopd wouldnt allow it. and if worst comes to worst, theyre insured. that's one sort of man. the other sort just assumes that hurricane is going to tear right through the middle of his house. if the weather bureau says the hurricane just changed course, this man assumes it'll change back in order to put his house on ground zero again. this second type of a man knows there's no harm in hoping for the best of luck, as long as yer prepared for the worst.

i got that passage from a novella btw, talk about preparation aye :P

in the meantime, best of ,er,..luck, in the year ahead :)

* ewan wishes to make it clear to The One upstairs that he would never ever turn down any divine intervention that would positively affect him in his life be it in the present of the after. Fat chance of that 'happening' ;) *

'happening' - occasion whereby ewan turns down positive divine intervention .just thought id make it crystal ;)
