Middlesbrough have made an enquiry for Liverpool's Emile Heskey, as the former Leicester City star's future grows increasingly uncertain.
Boro boss Steve McClaren is a keen admirer of Heskey, having worked with him during his time with England, and now he is believed to have made contact with his Anfield counterparts over the striker's availability.
Heskey's future is unclear, with the recent additions of French youngsters Florent Sinama-Pongolle and Anthony Le Tallec only adding to the striking options at Liverpool.
Michael Owen is first choice and Milan Baros was very much to the forefront of Gerard Houllier's thinking before he was injured.
Harry Kewell and El Hadji Diouf - currently employed on the flanks - are also potential forward options for Houllier, who is almost certain to add Djibril Cisse to his ranks over the summer.
Heskey knows that his chances will become more and more limited, which could force him to consider his future.
England coach Sven Goran Eriksson has stood by Heskey, even when he has not been in the greatest of form, but his international place may not always be available if he is not featuring regularly.
A move this month, however, remains highly unlikely as Liverpool will want a large squad for the end of season run-in.
Boro are making a number of enquiries at the moment as they bid to find at least one new striker and a failed move for Heskey is unlikely to come as much of a surprise to him.
The Teessiders have also looked at Blackburn duo Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke, together with Celtic pair John Hartson and Chris Sutton, as they consider what options are available to them during the transfer window.
