A friend and I were talking last night about what is the definition of sport. There are events like ice skating which I don't consider to be a sport but which the International Olympic Commitee obviously does. So, on that note I would be interested in all opinions on what actually defines a sport.

Get your thinking hats on.

Sport is:

Now for those that don't know spanish, that's the song of the program called Pasion that discuss soccer, this is the inglish version, but it dosn't rime...

"Purely passion, the most beutifull and pure passion,
Purely passion, that comes beneth from the heart,
And when you chase the ball like wind, it's a feling
And when the throught brusts in flames, it's a feling,

Purely passion, we are a town of only one passion,
Purely passion, that that grows up from the heart,
And when you chase the ball like wind, it's a feling
And when the throght brusts in flames, it's a feling,

Fotbolero of Law..."

...That's how I feel about sports, and mostly
futbol/soccer.

well, you never said why you don't consider ice skating a sport!

I dont get so hung up about criticizing certain sports like Synchronized swimming, target shooting, skateboarding etc. I say live and let live.

Oh by the way I think sport is something that involves physical activity, and is done in a competitive spirit.

Firstly there are certain things which are definitly not sports but yet are called sports; golf, fishing, race car driving.

Then there are things which involve being athletic but are also called sports but really aren't; ice skating, racing, swimming, gymnastics.

Finally we have sports, football, rugby, hockey, etc. Sports are activities which involve not only athletic ability but overpowering your opponent in some way. Sports are activities which allow humans to take their everyday trials and tribulations to a place where they can act out what they would like to do about it.

You only picked team competitions as a sport, well I just don't agree, are you saying athletics are not a sport?

C'mon guys, I thought this forum was full of opinionated people. There must be more of you out there with some good thoughts on this.
Dirk, yours is the best yet.

Polish, I don't consider ice skating a sport for the same reason that ballroom dancing is not a sport. It's all dancing and yup, you could say the same about synchronised swimming.
