Here is a post from the CNN/SI website. Will the madness ever end? Just think how good he could be if he was sane. Then again...maybe he wouldn't be any good at all without the madness.
RIO DE JANEIRO — Brazilian striker Edmundo, whose career has been blotted by fights, red cards and a car crash that led to manslaughter charges, has been kicked out of the Vasco da Gama team and is likely to be sold, club vice-president Eurico Miranda said on Tuesday.
Miranda said that Edmundo, who has just recovered from injury, had disrupted harmony by failing to join his team mates at a pre-match get-together last week and by announcing he wanted to leave the club.
Miranda also announced he was sacking interim coach Alcir Portela and putting former striker Tita in charge of the team. Portela was given the job after Abel Braga, himself made coach for only three months, walked out and accused Miranda of interfering in team affairs.
Vasco, who have a multi-million dollar squad, were beaten 3-0 by Flamengo in the first leg of the Carioca (Rio de Janeiro championship state) final on Sunday.
"The likely development from this is that he (Edmundo) will be sold," said Miranda, himself a fiery character with a reputation for confrontation. "His declarations that he wanted to leave and his failure to join the team concentration last week have led to this."
Edmundo has been deeply happy since his personal rival Romario was signed at the end of the last year.
The pair are rated as the two of the world's best forwards but instead of creating a strikeforce to be feared they have spent most of this year sniping at each other.
Edmundo at one stage referred to Romario as "The Prince" while Romario replied by naming vice-president Miranda the "King" and Edmundo "The Court Jester." The two players fell out when Romario, who owned a bar at the time, had a caricature of Edmundo painted on one of the doors in the men's toilets.
Edmundo is on his third stint at the club where he was raised and began his stormy career.
A player gifted with breathtaking skill, he has failed to fulfil his huge potential due to bust-ups with team mates, opponents and coaches alike.
He has also played for Palmeiras, Corinthians, Flamengo and Italy's Fiorentina and has become involved in disputes at every single club.
Last year, he was sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison for manslaughter following a car crash in 1995 which resulted in three people being killed. He spent one night in jail last year and was then release pending an appeal which has yet to be heard.
Edmundo also upset the Brazilian government's environmental agency last year when he hired a circus for his son's birthday party and was photographed giving beer to a chimpanzee.
Edmundo played for Brazil in their World Cup qualifier away to Peru 10 days ago. It was his first international appearance for nearly two years and he was sent off two minutes from time.
