01/20/2004. Croatia's manager Otto Baric has publicly stated that he does not want homosexuals in his squad.

He views homosexuality as "abnormal and should not be practiced by young people."

Baric expressed his opinion on this issue in an interview with 'Jutarnji List.'

"I know that there are no gays on my team, I can spot one in ten minutes and I don't like having them on my team," he said.

Baric will manage Croatia at the Euro 2004 championships in Portugal

I dont know how things are handled in europe, but a statement like that in north america would ruin someones life and get them fired.

As to the coach's opinions, well.........the US army would rather not have gays, the Catholic Church would rather not have gay priests (which is odd in itself as they are celibate in theory and requirement).

Of course most times you will see a pink elephant before you can ascertain if a man is gay or not, but we, most of us, would be lying to ourselves if we think we dont discriminate, (not discriminate, thats a phucked up word), if we don't filter our relationships with someone whos gay.

I am sure there'll be some who'll say I am homophobic, well I never give a phuck about anyone in here anyway, but the bottomline is I am not fooling myself to believe that I wouldn't have a problem with a known homosexual in particular situations, and the Croatian coach has a right to select a team he thinks is best, and if he thinks homosexuals upset the moral balance and performance of the team then thats his opinion.

I dont see many homosexual footballers saying they are gay (and they should admit it, even though the argument is made that heteros arent asked to affirm their heterosexuality).
They should admit it because minorities in any endeavour need role models more than most, but they don't and its probably for the same reason why the coach is expressing his "ignorant" view.
