Is there a way to stop your players leaving your club. I'm managing Everton at the moment and half way through my second season, im doing well in Champiions league and top of the premiership, and Wayne Rooney has decided he wants to leave when his contract runs out. He's been my most prolific player and played in nearly every one of my games. He won't even try and negociate a new contract, Is there a way to make him stay?

I think it's always good to save before every match (or every 2 matches), so when such an announcement is encountered, you can always quit, reload and extend his contract!

sell him for a lot of cash, or at least swap him for another good player with a similar salary

Swappings a possibility but if it's the year his contract ends, You'll have a lot of trouble selling him unless you sell him cheap & get him out of the club during the January transfer period.
If you reload from a saved game, you should be fine. so long as you have one.

He has two years left on his contract and he will not allow me to put him on the transfer list as he wants to see out his contract. Which i think is wrong as the manager has the right to put a player on the transfer list and not to be dictated to by the player

Well actually in the real world, it all depends on the clauses in the contract.
Take Saha for example, he has slightly more than 2 more years in Fulham before the end of his current contract.
He threatened the Fulham mgmt he will not move out of Fulham till the end of his contract (Fulham will not get a penny when he transfers out for free) if they don't let him join Man U now.
That means, the player may have a say whether he is willing to join the club he is to be sold to.

go into player talks , there is a comment in the list , that when pressed , the player will allow you to offer a new contract offer , of which he will decide wheather he likes or not ,
something like "i want you to stay at the club " the comment is .
sorry that i cannot be more specific .

Just won the Premier league and the Euro champs league and tried the player talks and the option "I want you to extend your contract with us" was there. Anyway it worked and he signed a new 4 year deal with me.
