Brothel does its bit for soccer club

February 12, 2004
A MELBOURNE soccer club has hopped into bed with a high-class brothel.
Heidelberg United Soccer Club, a former member of the NSL, has struck a sponsorship deal with Gotham City, which promotes itself as Australia's only six-star brothel.
"It's a straight-out cash deal for the club. There are no additional services offered, or asked for," Heidelberg president Elias Deliyannis said yesterday.
Gotham, which charges $240 an hour and an additional $30 for fantasies, has committed to a corporate sponsorship package of about $20,000.
"We're endeavouring to expose their business in a tasteful way," Deliyannis said.
"We have a lot of children registered with our club and we realise this has to be dealt with in a sensitive way.
"There definitely won't be signs at the ground or on our shirts.
"But the owner believes he will get value by word of mouth, and we're definitely acknowledging his generosity.
"We've found it hard to attract the sponsorship dollar, and we made the approach after finding out that the establishment had backed motor racing and netball in the past."
Heidelberg is promoting the South Melbourne brothel on its website and has sent out an electronic mailout announcing the sponsorship, with a blurb that includes "Support the girls who support us".
The Bergers have hit hard times since dropping out of the NSL in 1996 and have since been relegated to the State League's first division.
But under Deliyannis, the club has signed a number of former NSL players in a determined push for promotion to the Victorian Premier League.
The recruits include stopper Robert Liparoti and striker Vas Kalogeracos from South Melbourne, former Carlton striker Joe Tricarico, Ivan Jolic from Melbourne Knights and former Northern Spirit goalkeeper Lou Acevski.
Rob will no doubt be drawn to this.
