Microsoft is is now offering a free security CD for Win 98/SE, ME, 2000, and XP. "The Windows Security Update CD will be shipped to you free of charge. This CD includes Microsoft critical updates released through October 2003 and information to help you protect your PC. In addition, you will also receive free antivirus and firewall trial software."

Today, Microsoft started offering a free security CD for Windows 98, 98 SE, Me, 2000 and XP. The CD really is free, meaning Microsoft is not charging the typical $19.95 for so-called free CDs. Delivery takes 2-4 weeks.

The security update CD is the right approach, particularly for providing users of older Windows versions with badly needed fixes. I had recommended Microsoft release such as CD, and completely free of charge.

As proved by last year's Blaster and SoBig viruses or January's MyDoom bug, unpatched consumer PCs are an ongoing threat to everyone using a computer connected to the Internet. Consider that MyDoom successfully used infected PCs to flood SCO's Website with a denial-of-service attack.
