The Pianist is a great film.
I hope Michael Moore gets the documentary award.
Seán D 23-03-2003, 08:55:PM Bowling for Columbine is what I'm hoping for too.
Hakeem 24-03-2003, 06:53:AM oh my god! did you heard Michaels Moore speech? he went totally againt the war and Bush and he got some people cheering and others booing. So good.
Also the guy that presented the song of "Frida" said anti-war comments and I cant wait to hear Susan Sarandon, she's so agains the war that she's definitely gonna say something :rockman:
Run DMB 24-03-2003, 06:56:AM Holy ****... did anyone else see Michael Moore's acceptance speech? He's not winning another Oscar again that's for sure. :D (:/)
rhizome17 24-03-2003, 06:58:AM Good on him. And why won't he get another Oscar? Cos he is honest?
Vagegast 24-03-2003, 07:03:AM Great speech, a lot of people were quit and were staring, a lot were booing to.
I'll post an MP3 for the people who didn't hear it.

Good on him. And why won't he get another Oscar? Cos he is honest?
Because he used the Oscars to promote his views on a controversial topic. The people who organize the Academy Awards wont like that. :nape:
rhizome17 24-03-2003, 07:14:AM Well I am sure that he made his mind up that the suffering of war is more important than stroking ones ego with a gold statuette. Which is pretty obvious when you think about it.
Gerrard 17 24-03-2003, 07:23:AM F*CK!!!!!! :kader:
I was taking a shower while he got it :(
what was the people's reaction? where can i get a transcript/Mp3 :S
Hakeem 24-03-2003, 07:25:AM yeah, I'm in total favor of Michael.
btw: Adrien Brodi win Best Actor for the Pianist with a great speech too
and
EMINEM WON THE OSCAR!!!!! :rockman: :rockman: :rockman:
KingPaulV 24-03-2003, 07:25:AM I think the speech given just a little later by Adrien Brody was 1000 times better......that was beautiful, a real piece of class that captured how I feel about all this.......Michael Moore was kind of venting .......bringing in more hate to the world aint gonna fix nothing

I didnt' hear Michael Moore's speech, but I tuned in once I read about it. I saw Adrien Brody win and I agree that the speech basically sums out how I feel about the situation, too.

Exactly what I think... Moore was right to express his opinion but he could have done it with a little more tact. Brody's speech was excellent, probably the best Oscar speech I've ever heard. I love how he told the guys to stop playing the music cause he wasn't done yet.
Hakeem 24-03-2003, 07:36:AM yeah, Brody's one was supreme and touching (and what a nose he has btw :p )

Michael Moore and Michael Donovan
ACCEPTANCE SPEECH
Whoa. On behalf of our producers Kathleen Glynn and Michael Donovan from Canada, I'd like to thank the Academy for this. I have invited my fellow documentary nominees on the stage with us, and we would like to — they're here in solidarity with me because we like nonfiction. We like nonfiction and we live in fictitious times. We live in the time where we have fictitious election results that elects a fictitious president. We live in a time where we have a man sending us to war for fictitious reasons. Whether it's the fictition of duct tape or fictition of orange alerts we are against this war, Mr. Bush. Shame on you, Mr. Bush, shame on you. And any time you got the Pope and the Dixie Chicks against you, your time is up. Thank you very much.
Bobby 24-03-2003, 07:41:AM How the **** did Eminem win an Oscar?
zul-aid 24-03-2003, 07:42:AM Im on the website I dont see Brody's speech
In some way KingPaul you are correct, but you are for this way and thus against what he says so you will always be critical I read his speech and havent seen it, but I cannot judge it until i see it.

Hakeem 24-03-2003, 07:48:AM yeah I didnt hear that part either

THE PIANIST
ACCEPTANCE SPEECH
I bet they didn't tell you that was in the gift bag. Oh my god. Thank you. Thank you, really. Oh my goodness. It doesn't come out in slow motion, but it doesn't really ring a bell. The name — I didn't know my name. This Adrien? Okay. I haven't really written a speech because every time I wrote a speech for the past one of these things I didn't win. But, you know, there comes a time in life when everything seems to make sense and this is not one of those times. What I do know though is that I've never felt this much love and encouragement from my peers and from people I admire and from complete strangers. And it means a great deal to me. And if it weren't for the insomnia and the sudden panic attacks, this has been an amazing, amazing journey. I have to thank — they're already flashing time's up. I have to thank my mother and father, most importantly, for all the creativity and encouragement and they've been just real strength. They've given me a great deal of strength. What can I say? This film would not be possible without the blue print provided by Wladyslaw Szpilman. This is a tribute to his survival. I'd like to thank Roman Polanski for the role of a lifetime. And for those of you who have seen the film and have sat through the credits, you know there are too many people to thank individually. I would not be there without all their efforts. And I thank them. And everyone worked extremely hard to make this film. And I have to thank Focus Features for getting us out there. To my longtime friend, manager, agent, consigliare Joanne Colonna everybody at the firm, PMK/HBH. And you know, wait one second. One second, please one second. Cut it out, cut it out. I get one shot at this. I'm sorry. I didn't say more than five names, I don't think, but. This is, you know, it fills me with great joy, but I am also filled with a lot of sadness tonight because I am accepting an award at such a strange time. And you know my experiences of making this film made me very aware of the sadness and the dehumanization of people at times of war. And the repercussions of war. And whatever you believe in, if it's God or Allah, may he watch over you and let's pray for a peaceful and swift resolution. Thank you. And I have a friend from Queens who's a soldier in Kuwait right now, Tommy Zarabinski, and I hope you and your boys make it back real soon. God bless you guys. I love you. Thank you very much.
Hakeem 24-03-2003, 08:11:AM Pedro Almodovar won for Original Screenplay! :rockman:

Run DMB 24-03-2003, 08:17:AM Polanski just won for Best Director. I'm betting it will be the Pianist for Best Picture now too. :rockman:

Usually he's really funny... but tonight... well he hasn't said anything that had me rolling on the floor laughing. A few of his jokes were pretty good, most were mediocre.
Gerrard 17 24-03-2003, 08:27:AM I like his movies, but today he was just corny.
Vagegast 24-03-2003, 08:27:AM Some good at the beginning but this joke:
"When I found out that Richard Gere wasn't nominated, I said: 'Welcome to my world'"
There were some nice once though.
I liked Kirk Douglas
KingPaulV 24-03-2003, 08:31:AM Zul-Aid I am not for the war......I am for my country.......but I cant stand Bush I did not vote for him and I think his brother fixed the election, but this thing......this war, it really hit home for me today, I saw the pictures of those soldiers killed and captured for the first time on the web address Rhizome posted and I remembered my brother in Law, and about another 5 close friends I have there....two of them with forward units.....and yesterday some 15 marines died, God knows how many more people are gonna die on this.........all the strategy is out the window, so is all the criticism.....like Andrien Brody said......now I'm just praying for a "swift resolution of the conflict".....I mean you know now war is real.......at least for me
Run DMB 24-03-2003, 08:32:AM Kirk Douglas was awesome. Too bad Chicago won though. :( But I didn't expect The Pianist to win all those awards either so that's good. :)

Yeah its just what I read about your posts it would seem that your for the war - which again you would be overly critical of Moore, fans of him like myself are also too.
The person who can give a good opinion on him would be someone who doesnt know him, his views, political standpoint, and know nothing of the war.
I have read good and bad on Michael Moore (I have agreed with people who give him ****) but he is always agressive thats how he got where he is - A person who makes a point without feeling might as well say nothing.
Vagegast 24-03-2003, 09:41:PM Yes, incredibly aggresive, for example: the start of his documentary was very anti-White (so what if I do watch Oprah ;)) talking about how white people killed a whole race (the indians) because they were afraid of them and how the whites lived off the black (slaves) for decades. very interesting and he has a good point.
edit: @ pradyut: i'll post the mp3 in about 2.5 hours, i'm at school now.

I know your new here but I have been a huge fan of Michael's since the first run of the Awful truth and TV Nation (synidicated shows) and have B4C about 6 times (2 only paid for) as talking about his speech but since I finally got to see it last nite (Australian time), it was what I expected fairly from him an aggressive speech.
If you look above my sig a link to his site sits which it has since I first came here
I highly recommend "Stupid White Men" the book a classic read and watch "Roger and Me" his beginning.
Also Steve Martin said "Now Michael's teamster friends are now helping him into his limo" it wasnt teamsters it was security and Michael was kicked out of the rest of the event.
Vagegast 25-03-2003, 01:34:AM New? Aight, rookie ;) I ain't disrespecting you or anything.

Try uploading the DivX file if you can :)
I just finished watching The Pianist 20 minutes ago and I have to say that I'm amazed.
I was hoping for Daniel Day-Lewis to in Best Actor but after seeing Brody tonight I must say that he's genious here. Amazing work. You feel all his pain thru the movie. All the fear and the hunger. Unbelievable and great for him that won.
An excellent choice by the Academy :rockman: :rockman: :rockman:

YES and YES
I have seen 'n' read all of his work as I have said
Personally I would recommend Awful Truth/TV Nation episodes on Kazaa really top ****
His letters after September 11th which span the first week are also good
I also have two audioclips
1) A speech @ Ralph Naders election rally in New York around Nov 2000: claiming Bush being elected would be a horrific event (sort of chilling when he says it)
2) At a book launch for SWM - also every good last for about an hour each and this one is after Afghanistan war and a prelude to Iraq but I have had it for more than a year so its a bit dated.
If anyone want any of these I'll post them on Kazaa on request: noodles_murdoc@hotmail.com just email me or messenger it over to you whatever is easiest.
ROGER and ME is very hard to find because its like 10 or more years old.

I have it on video, as I used exerpts from it when I was tutoring labour relations. Plus I used some stuff from The Awful Truth when tutoring on sexuality, one of his episodes had a fantastic segment on Gay rights in the US, where he takes this bus load of queens to parade on the streets of ultra-conservative towns.
What cracked me up was that one of these conservative towns was called - CUMMING. lol!

Another Moore-convert, heh? :p
Perles 26-03-2003, 03:57:AM wow I'm old, I saw Roger & Me in the theater, as well as the follow-up (pets or dinner, or some such, they had this lady in Flint who was skinning her pet rabbit) which was on PBS (Public Broadcasting Service, kind of a learning channel). I thought both were superb. But IMHO he's gotten a little too big-headed with success.
rhizome17 26-03-2003, 04:05:AM heh, I am not that old :p I recall the thing with the pet rabbit though.

IceBlu 01-03-2004, 12:25:PM 11 Awards ! (tied with Titanic and Ben Hur :( )
f*ck em
:f***: :f***: :f***:
well at least Sean Penn won the award for best actor
Lennon 01-03-2004, 12:27:PM yeah, I'm watching the Oscars now and LOTR is getting all the awards
xxxFLYERxxx 01-03-2004, 12:28:PM that was so annoying. they won every frickin award. i hate lord of the rings, especially those damn hobbits. what a bunch of losers, did you see them standing together? they're like 3 feet tall in real life.
IceBlu 01-03-2004, 12:32:PM yeah :kader: and they are all friendly and hobbity :f***:
and i hate that director as well ... fed up of seeing him over and over
Lennon 01-03-2004, 12:36:PM haha, the director was funny tho
He looked like a drunk bum :funny:
Alistair 01-03-2004, 12:37:PM meh, New Zealand success, I ain't complaining :D

I bet he and Michael Moore hang out. They look like brothers.
11 awards... not bad, but that's because they were screwed the last 2 years. Thank goodness something finally caught up with Titanic. Wasnt' Heston in Ben Hur?
i hate the lord of the rings i went to watch the 1st 1 at the movies and fell asleep 30 minutes into it worst movie ever made
Lennon 01-03-2004, 12:56:PM When I went to the movies to see the first LOTR I hated it too. In fact, I didn't even bother to go watch the second movie.
But before the third movie arrived in theaters my friends rented the first two movies and I became interested in them. Sounds weird, but those rentals got me into the movie again and I enjoyed watching the third one on the movies.
Caponedawg 01-03-2004, 12:58:PM Am I the only one shocked that Gigli or Cat In The Hat weren't nominated for any awards??
Lord of the Rings sucks. It proves that the Oscars are now worthless.
Titanic? Lord of the Rings? C’mon what credibility does it have left?
It launches some people's career but that is about it..
Moron 01-03-2004, 01:01:PM This is ****ed up!! :f***:

At the end of the day, the movies are meant to be watched as one film, so thats why it is getting all the awards now.
Good on ya Peter Jackson, keeping it real by not bending to the studio's demands and doing things your own way.
Never been much of a fan of awards shows, but Peter deserves all this for beign such an ordinary bloke.

yep. I agree. this a movie made with lots and lots of money from a studio, but it was made peter jackson's way.
and come on, I dont understand the LotR haters, just try to name a movie that was better. all time even.
all the work and effort put into these movies is incredible. just check the DVDs and you'll see it. they made castles, boats, 200 different armors, 200 difefrent swords. thats huge it deserves to be aknowledged with an oscar.
and yes, it's a 10 hour movie so its ok that they lost the last 2 years and won everything now (more that 11 if you count the 15 technical awards they won last week).

sslazio121087 01-03-2004, 02:27:PM Lord of the Rings deserved every oscar they won and I'm glad they got it.
The Drovers Dog 01-03-2004, 02:44:PM Lotr IMO deserved every thing that it won, at the Oscars and the Tech Awards, some of you guys who didn't like the series probably havn't read the books, also the Theatre releases have been edited into an acceptable time frame for the movie goers, the Extended Dvd versions fill in a lot of gaps that was missing from the Theatre Versions and are far more enjoyable, Titanic is a great film in it's own right as is the old and dusty Ben Hur, but when taking Lotr into context and after watching the series a few times you then start to realise the enormity and scope of this movie.
The camera work, the sets, models, lighting, costumes, armors and weapons, and the outdoor settings far surpass anything to date, the massive City of Minas Tirith was done to an amazing detail, when you closely watch that high cam fly bye over that City, you notice that from the top level to the lower street levels, that city is truly Dynamic, with war machines, troops and equipment all moving along in real time.
The Journey thro' the Mines of Moria in the Fellowship of The Ring, that ended with Gandalf's battle with Balrog the Fire Demon, is a movie sequence that will be long remembered.
Aragorn's confrontation with the Armies of the Dead was another fantastic piece of Movie sequence.
But apart from all that and many, many more fantastic scenes in that series, the series would have failed if Gollum wasn't as realistic a charactor as was presented in those movies, the Mo Cap and real time animation of that Gollum creature was a joy to behold, thanks to a great special effects crew and Andy Sarkiss who brought Gollum to life. In fact can any of you guys point out a movie where you ever have seen anything like that.
Not Shrek please, that movie was a 100% 3d animated family feature film that stood out in it's own right. --- rant over -- :)
m3th0d 01-03-2004, 03:39:PM eh, i like the lord of the rings. :S

I don't think they went into these movies knowing it was going to be so big. And I don't think they all got "well" paid from the start. Who are most of the actors or actresses? I bet they got many bonuses if merch sold well, or if the movies did well.
I do think they had the passion to do these movies. If you ever watch the bonuses on the DVD's you can see it. Like when they do certain things in the movie that are in the book, and if you didn't read the book you wouldn't have any idea.. That takes alot of work and time. Plus I think most of them were fans anyway before hand.
And even with all of the money, they could have screwed this trilogy up very badly. When was the last time you saw 3 movies of the same subject, and had each movie get better?
Something Star Wars can't say... Well, the last Indiana Jones was better than the 2nd.
Either way, thumbs up for everyone. None of those actors and actresses will ever be looked at the same again. They are forever from Middle Earth and their careers are probably over. :o
Oscar is always about big budget movie which earns lots of $$$. It has never been about the cinematic art itself. I remember how pathetic it was some years ago when a gay movie like Titanic can win the freakin` award.

those are all excellent and some are huge too. but just a few have the acting portion, story portion and epic portion of film that LotR has.
Pulp Fiction, The Usual Suspects, Being John Malkovick, Lost in Translation, Mystic River, and lots of those are acting and storywise amazing movies, but those movies were filmed in a city or small sets. for LotR they built castles. more that one. and thats why they got all the technical awards plus the visual effects awards. hope you know what I mean.
still, everybody has different opinnions so there's no problem with people not liking a movie. I did :)

its not like that. Titanic did win. but the other movies that year cant compare with it. (btw, I cant beleive that titanic made all that money, same for LotR and nobody here liked it :p)
and anyway, Epic movies usually win because they have more effort and work put into them. the movies are not all about the acting.
and though they ussually win, it doesnt happens always.
one of the best movies all time is Star Wars, which was revolutionary for the 70s, and Lucas lost the OScar to Woody Allen's Annie Hall. a movie probably filmed in Woody's appartment in NY. :p

100 % correct.
I know for certain that Peter Jackson negotiated a deal where his payment for the films would come primarily from a portion of the box office returns, so the amount he ended up with was dependent on people going to see the film.
Also, with the film being shot in NZ, costs were further kept down, since when the filming began our dollar was around US 40cents (although it is up to US 70cents now).
Furthermore, alot of the construction and battle scenes were undertaken by the NZ Army, who obviously don't have much else to do outside of Afghanistan and East Timor, plus hordes of volunteers were used in the battles as well. I doubt very few people could have made such an epic film on the budget provided.
Lastly, I would be the first to agree that Mystic River and Lost in Translation (I haven't seen the others nominated) are better films than the third LotR movie - my taste anyway. But the other films were not up against the third film, they were up against the entire trilogy.
Bobby 02-03-2004, 03:46:AM All the work and the Thousands of people and hours that went into LotR, they deserved it, fully.

I dont think those 2 movies were better than RotK alone. ok, those 2 are extremely well acted. awesome stories and both with great directors. but I still think that RotK is in their league even though it doesnt have the powerfull acting performances.
Seabiscuit is a great film too, I though it was too childish to be noinated for best picture. I would've preffer to get City of God nominated though I havent seen it, but I bet its a better adult movie.
Master and Commander for kinda boring. too much sea and the performances werent that good.

Yeah, just my preference for movies is the smaller, dialogue-oriented character explorations. But I think that PJ deserved the Oscar when the entire trilogy is taken into account. Take LotR out of the equation and I reckon Mystic River would have taken the Best Picture award, and other categories would have been more random.

Didn't they give out the awards for "best actor" or "best actress" to Mystic River? If so, that is how they worked it this year. They gave credit to the individual actors for their roles in the movie, but as a whole LOTR deserved it.
rhizome17 02-03-2004, 05:10:AM Yeah, I Penn got best actor and Theron got actress for Monster.
Basically LotR was the only film that was going to win this year for best pic, after 2 nominations previously but no gongs.
I haven't seen Monster, but thought Johansson was pretty good in Lost in Translation.
Hakeem 02-03-2004, 06:12:AM yeah. Johanson was great there. but the fault was made by Focus Features as they should've preseneted her as a supporing actress instead of first actress. that way, she would've been nominated and maybe won over Renee.
I havent seen Cold Mountain but after all the problems it had (like getting 11 nominations to the GG and then justa few in all the other awards, and no best pic at the oscars), Im betting is not that great.
Spurs4Life 02-03-2004, 07:16:AM Matrix didn't even get a nomination :o :p

::Jason:: 02-03-2004, 01:28:PM I think that's poor. Like I didn't hate LOTR enough already. he might be a true fan tho, you can never know..

precise 02-03-2004, 09:31:PM Loved the part where Crystal was trying to read the celebrity's expressions...especially the one with Julie Andrews
PhiLLer 03-03-2004, 01:53:AM The intro was awesome! Best thing ever. You can really tell the Oscars have been taking a look at the MTV Movie Awards
Bobby 03-03-2004, 05:03:AM heh, i bet Pete Rose shot the TV when Crystal made fun of him

I personally would've given him a.. Jerry Lawler piledriver, that would've broke his neck.
Or I would've gone Ty Cobb style on Pete Rose's arse. (H)

AcillateM 04-03-2004, 02:45:AM LOTR rules :)
i saw the oscars, everytime lotr was nominated they got it.
after seeing it hell ya i am moving to new zealand.:rockman:
INFESTA 05-03-2004, 05:07:AM I'm glad they got all those Oscars. It may or may not be the best movie ever, but definitely it is the greatest cinematographic achievement of all time, and only for that it already deserved all the Oscars it could get!
I rate a movie like I rate any other piece of art out there: those who leave a greater mark on me, those who can effectively transmit a message, those who change my life are certainly the best ones. And LOTR did that.
It wasn't love at first sight. In fact, I was a hater like some of you are now. I skipped the first 2 movies and only watched the first episode's DVD like 6 months ago. I only watched an hour before falling asleep. But something told me to give it another try, and it somehow clicked. I watched the second episode 2 weeks later and went to the movies to see the Grande Final.
I still think about the movie every week... Can't wait for the DVD to come out! :)
[Also, check my sig below.]
About these year's nominees, City Of God is also one of the best movies I've ever seen, and it's a shame you guys can't speake portuguese, bcs you'll probably miss half of the fun. Still, it's definitely more original than anything Hollywood put out in the past couple of years. [PEGA A GALINHA, CARALHO! (H)]
Rent it! :)
Hakeem 05-03-2004, 05:18:AM I agree with that. I have almost the same rating system.
I admit that Mystic River is an awesome preformance driven movie. but after seing it I didnt feel anything. it didnt affect me at all. I fact, I can name another movie of child abuse and the story about adults, "Sleepers" with brad pitt, robert deniro, and lots of actors and that movie is great and it had more effect in me than mystic river.
also Lost in Translation is great, but I have to say that Sofia Coppola's first movie, The Virgin Suicides is a much better movie, and smaller too. you guys should see it.
City of God I havent seen but I have it on dvd and I'll see it soon. Ive read that its really powerfull when talking about children violence and those movies tend to be great.
Watching Lord of the Rings in the movies was one of my best experiences ever (only losing to the Silverchair on 15 may 2003, i still have the ticket, and probably going to lose when i have sex for the first time:crazyboy: ). Well deserved, there is no such better epic movie, fiction movie, whatever.
They've put a lot of effort on to it, and you like it or not, they won it all. It must be a record, i dont think any movie that won the best movie award, still won 100% of the Oscars they were nominated for, which such a high number of awards won, i mean, getting 11 nominations and winning all of the 11, it's just too classy.:mrpimp:
Hakeem 06-03-2004, 07:33:AM only 2 movies besides LotR have won all the oscars they were nominated for. and both those movies had and won 9. LotR:RotK had and won 11.
I cant remember the movies, I think Lawrence of Arabia was one of them but Im not sure.
Help? 06-03-2004, 10:53:AM I agree, i have seen the movie twice and loved it both times. It might seem boring for people that have not read a book, but if you read a book, you will truly appreciate all the hardwork Peter has put into that movie. Besides it was the most awaited movie of 2003, beating Matrix and i believed they made the biggest income in 2003. It was somewhere around 2.5 billion. I think only Star Wars Trilogies made more and Gone with the wind. And it's still going.
Hakeem 06-03-2004, 02:07:PM nah, RotK is second in alltime behind Titanic which made 1.8 billions.
RotK just passed the 1 billion mark a few weeks ago.
gagiz 07-03-2004, 10:31:AM I'm not that of a lotr fan but the last won had a lot of action, that was my favorite, even tho i didnt c da oders. The actor hoo duz frodo is scary lookin.kind of like this guy :jacko:

not too much to do with newzealand apart from the landscape :S :crazyboy:
RuiCosta_10 08-03-2004, 12:38:AM LOTR is the best movie i ever seen, they deserved to win all that...
Help? 08-03-2004, 01:59:AM Same here. I feel sad now, that it's over. It was a great adventure movie. What interesting adventures are there now? Star Wars Episode 3? Coming outin 1 year. Pirates of the Carribean 2? COming out in 1 year and a half. Spiderman is not an adventure anyways. So all i have left is wait till June for Harry Potter 3:kader: .
ishan1990 09-03-2004, 05:59:AM i miss lord of the rings already. Luckily there are still more games yet to be released, and they are going to make the hobbit movie.
Mauricio 09-03-2004, 10:08:AM Pirates of the caribean was so damn good, though
Jack Sparrow is gay. :crazyboy:

He is not gay, he is ******* hilarious.
Without him, the movie probably would have been average. Johnny Depp, worked hard for sure.
Mauricio 09-03-2004, 10:57:AM yeah i know he had a SUPERB job but he was kinda gay you must accept that
