Does anyone own a Mitsubishi FTO GS?

I am looking to sell my current motor and get this, I just want to see if anyone knows anything that I should be aware of.

Thx

Looks ugly mate. Like a cross between a recreational speedboat and a wannabe sports car:kader:

You think so? I actually love it in person, its a lot larger than it looks, and the specs are crazy for what it is.

The one I am looking at is a 1.8 Tiptronic.

Japanese Car of the year 1994-1995, rated the best front wheel drive sports car of the 1990's.

I have fallen in love :hump:

But it's minging. :o It's nicer in person, but it's still a pretty ugly car. It looks all plastic.

I have to get my eyes checked, I must be the only person to think the car is beautiful. Perhaps someone who has seen one in person would like to back me up... :(

Same model, with a polish :)

Can't stop the rush...

Damn Rob, by posting a Mitsubishi you made me think about getting a Lancer Evo.:p :D

::Jason::

It's not so bad, looks a tad too round imo.. but cars ain't always judged on how then look from the side.

The Lancer Evo's are actually almost best looking cars for my taste.. :p

I've seen a few. There are a couple near where I live, one's red the other's silver/grey. The red one looks better than the silver/grey one, but they don't know whether to be bubbly or boxey. I don't like them.

Mind you I wouldn't get an Audi TT because most of the people I see driving them are middle aged women. Neither would I get a Subaru Impreza because it seems to be becoming the mid-life crisis man's car. They're both nice cars but the sort of people that I now associate them with goes against them.

Who do you associate the FTO with? Thing is there are less than 3000 in the UK in total so its harder to generalize.

from this angle the ride actually looks like a Porche, and that is good. :p

with a little lowening on the suspension it'd actually look quite
nice on the front and side too imo

Yeah I have read about 30 reviews, I am just trying to find someone that I can easily communicate with to give me the facts.

All the FTO message boards are frequented by fanatics that sound like they are trying to sell me a car...

Nobody. :D Like I said, I've seen 2 FTOs so they haven't been 'pigeon-holed', yet. :)

Fact is I've only based this on personal experience. I'd say 75% of the TT's I've seen have been driven by middle-aged women, but then I've seen probably 40-50 of them. Nice cars though all the same.

Still, the FTO is a lot nicer than those photos you showed, (I was probably a bit harsh initially :p ) but it's not my cup-of-tea so to speak. The side-on photo made it look a bit like a Ford Puma, which is a bit too compact from front to back for my liking, the FTO is a lot more symetrical in the flesh.

I don't know anything other than what you said about it performance wise. It went up in my estimation a bit with the figures you stated. :)

tiptronic is same as an auto but transfers power quicker yes?
that would be way too boring for me, u gotta have a manual gear box! i fink u'll b VERY lucky to get insured, i fink u will find they are group 20, same as the Evo!

schmeichel01
04-03-2004, 07:09:AM
Tiptronic is a semi-automatic gearbox.

There are 2 tracks and a crossover, the right side is the standard P,R,N,D,1,2,3

And the Left is +/-

Basically it is a clutchless manual.

The FTO is basically exclusively an import car (only 50 a year are produced for sale in the UK, the rest are imported). The Japanese market is 90% Automatic so finding a manual is difficult.

Anyway the specs are not very different at all, and its nice having the auto for city traffic, and the clutchless manual for drives through the country....

As for insurance, 18 year old male, 3+ Years NCB (carried from the states), no convict it was £1530 from Norwich Union.

Test driving on Saturday :)

Looking at the FTO over and over again I must say I'm starting to like it, it'll look even better when ya lower it. Though having a car like that with auto gearbox is basically pointless, the whole joy of driving is the stick shifting.

Nice one there, Ryan. I might pop over and nick it from ya:p

04-03-2004, 05:34:PM
Yeah true, I want something with low mileage, and there were only like 2-3000 manual versions ever produced, and none were sold directly in the UK. You would have to go on a search of the Japanese market then go through the hastle of importing yourself, getting the SVA (making it UK street legal) etc.... 5-7 month process.

The only manuals I can find have more than 50K on them

What are the emission restrictions in the UK?

Can you have any type of exhaust?

schmeichel01
04-03-2004, 05:38:PM
Emission restrictions change with the age and size of the engine. Also depending on if you have a CAT installed or not... its not totally clear, not even to the testers sometimes.....

I want that car of urs, but the tinting is too dark in the front side, it is not street legal in the UK.

The FTO is a nice car. It does look a hell of allot better in real life than in the pics. If you don't mind me asking, what happened to you getting another Audi?

As long as you don't get caught speeding with the pitch black stuff.

It helps alot though when you are stuck in traffic and wanna light it up.:mrpimp:

schmeichel01

Yeah, my baby :) but I want something a bit more sporty (heh more teen friendly) and with less mileage.

Selling the A4 for £5995 if anyone is interested...

Insurance was out of the question.... usually my mums company sorts it out for me, but the one I wanted had a premium of close to £4000 a year..... they told me to walk... heh.

I was gutted, I had test driven and everything, was waiting for the insurance to clear before I signed the papers then it all went bad :(

Ahh crap man sorry too hear that. I wanted to steal my Mum's Escort XR3i off her when I start driving but the insurance is far too expensive.

You can stick that one right up yer arse, Ryan:p

Insurance is a pain in the ass, for instance when I went over to Ireland at xmas my dad rented a car which I also wanted to drive though they told me you have to be 25 in order to drive a rental car, what kinda crap is that? I can drive, whether I'm 25 or not doesn't make any difference.

I'd buy yer Audi, Rob but I only have about 150 quid to my name:$ :(

PhiLLer
04-03-2004, 07:16:PM
Over here they have this insurance thing where you are allowed to drive only 10 times (if the car you drive is registered under yer parents name) and everytime you drive somewhere you have to phone the insurance company to tell them that you are gonna drive to somewhere. Pathetic, I hate insurance companies, half the time you won't even need 'em :D

schmeichel01
04-03-2004, 08:36:PM
All I need really is a 3rd part coverage, if I crash my car most likely most of the real cost is too the other person who will want a whole new motor......

I have had 2 dinks in london, both times we settled it on the spot. Last time it was funny, this 21 year old ran into the back of me, and wanted to protect his no claims so he paid me about150 quid more than it was really worth just so we didn't go through insurance.

Personally I'd stick with that one, well maybe try to get an A3. ;)

I don't know what it is, but I just hate Asian cars that want to look like a real sports car. Mazda's, Toyota's, Nissan's all of them. :kader:

I'd rather have your A4 with a powerful engine (quattro would be ace as well). It's just cool to drive a well designed car, that doesn't look like "look-at-me-driving-this-ace-sports-car-but-actually-it's-just-an-asian-wannabe" and at the same time owns almost any car on the road in terms of performance. (H)

I'd definately would want such a car in the future. An Audi A4 or A6 that's just fast as hell without the spoilers and other pathetic accesoiries. New BMW6 is ace too. :mrpimp:

Shame Subaru Impreza has that stereotype attached to it in your country, mate. It's a great car, particularly its STI series, which I think is way better in terms of quality/price than any of the cars mentioned in this thread.

So yeah, I want to buy this car, but I'm afraid I'd kill myself right away. I'm already speeding way too much on my 16v Opel Corsa and my mom's Fiat Bravo 1.9 GTI.
But damn, that Subaru is amazing... Just listen to the engine sing! And besides, it kicks any car's arse; there are a good number of vids on p2p progs with street races between the Impreza and several other vehicles, and it just embarrasses the competition. :mrpimp:

My opinion probably doesn't represent that of my country. Yer see, I quite fancied an Impreza at one point so I started looking around. (I mean Impreza vs Evo - I reckon the Evo is too boxey, and the Impreza looks nice).

Anyway, I started looking around... Most of the drivers I saw were mid-age crisis types. It's reputation went down a bit for me then. Performance wise I can't fault it though.

I bought an A4 because I love the style and the feel of the drive, but mine was getting on in age and miles ( I do between 15-20 k a year) and it was developing some problems and the reliability factor was not really there.....

I bought the FTO on Saturday, I pick it up this coming friday, I will start posting some pictures :)

LuckyStrike

I hear the Impreza has a boring low end. It's not until the turbo kicks in that you really start to feel anything. Seeing as how I live in the traffic capitol of the US, a great top end does nothing for me.

(But I'd happily trade it for the Impreza...)
