Elijah Wood Learning To Kick Soccer Fans' Butts
03.11.2004 5:15 PM EST

LOS ANGELES — Move over, Schwarzenegger, Stallone and Van Damme, because the list of movie stars who have busted their butts to learn how to kick ass in a movie has just gotten a new name.

"I've been in fight training," Elijah Wood revealed at this week's premiere for "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," the smart new drama in which he co-stars with Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet (see "Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet, Elijah Wood Bask In 'Eternal Sunshine' At Premiere").

It's all in preparation for the movie "The Yank," which the "Lord of the Rings" star will be shooting for six weeks in England beginning later this month.

"It's a movie about English football — soccer — and hooliganism," he explained. "Fans of football there sort of form these factions and fight amongst [each other]. It's a massive part of the culture. It's all throughout Europe and a lot of it is prevalent in England. I play an American who gets mixed up in that world after coming over to visit his sister."

"The Yank," originally titled "Hooligans" (see "What Lies Ahead For The Hobbits?"), was written by Dougie Brimson, a former serviceman, and is being directed by Lexi Alexander, whose short film "Johnny Flynton" earned an Oscar nomination in 2002. In addition to Wood, the cast includes Ross McCall ("Band of Brothers") and "Nicholas Nickleby" star Charlie Hunnam, last seen in "Cold Mountain."

"It'll be pretty incredibly violent and realistic," Wood promised with a grin. "It'll be fun."

"The Yank" (which could very well be called "Hooligans" again before it's released) is due in theaters next year.

Wood has also completed work on the animated feature "Happy Feet," with Robin Williams and Brittany Murphy, which should surface sometime in 2006.

Here in England we saw a sneak peak on the news when they were filming a couple of scenes last year, when it was called "Hooligans" at the time, but all we saw were aload of hooligans fighting. (H)

Should be good.

They should have casted Vinnie Jones somewhere in this film. He played a great hooligan in Eurotrip. :p

should be a good film, Dougie Brimson knows what's going on so he should be able to put together a fairly realistic piece.

I''ll go and see it.

sounds like a very interesting film this one. can't wait to see it.

However it's not gonna do much good for the reputation of English fans. As we aren't the worst nation of hooligans anymore. but anyway any movie bout footy is worth a look. :)

I hate it how people always say England has the worst hooliganisim... look at argentina and Italy, they're officials arn't doing anything, the FA is.

Off topic but read in the United magazine that Dominic Monaghan(sp?) said that he's terrible at football.

It will be great, a Hobbit being owned by Hooligans, something we would never seen in a LOTR film. (H)

Aparently it's gunna feature the ICF fighting the Millwall crews. Hope they don't get Cass Pennant to advise them, or else it will be all about 100 of the West Ham firm winning against 3000 Millwall/Chelsea/Arsenal/Sperz crew. Anyway, I'll go see it cos it's (semi) about West Ham.

Help?

off topic: Yup i read that article as well. Was pretty funny. Dom said that he was brining his comp to the set, and was making Elijah watch "the treble", "match of the day" etc. videos, but Elijah was still teribble on the field and Dom added that Elijah thinks football is all about keeping possesion and not actually placing a ball into the net:crazyboy: .

I like the part where Dominic said that Liv Tyler (Arwen) supports United, because he was asking her "who do you support?" every time and he was just answering "United!".
lol i think Dom made the actors know about United:rockman: . And even King Theoden supports them. Only Dom's dad is a City fan.

back to topic. I think that the movie will definietly have Vinnie Jones there. I mean basically from all the latest movies, about english hooliganism, he was in it. Vinnie is just great for that kind of movies.

just got back from watching Hooligans at the Atlanta Film Festival. really awesome movie. very violent, and a great, energetic performance by Charlie Hunnam as the leader of the Green Street Elite of West Ham United.
my only down point of the movie was Claire Forlani's character who disrupted the whole second half of the movie. it was an understandable character to have in the movie but I just didnt care for her.
Ill have a full review soon :)

btw, did you guys get the movie yet in England? because they were making a poll here about how to name the movie in the US. they said that in England its called "Green Street" and that "Hooligans" is the temp title in the US but they are thinking about changing it because its too negative :|
IMDB doesnt say anything about Green Street being the UK title though :S

You know its probably going to take people getting arrested for piracy to stop people posting things like this on public forums....pretty silly if you ask me...

Anyway, the concept of the movie sounds interesting but i would question the casting of Wood in it. As soon as someone mentioned Collin Farrel i thought he would be perfect. Elijah Wood seems a little too innocent for such a role. I guess it would depend on the angle of the plot, like if its about his corruption towards hooliganism or if he is a lout already and just joins in.

Hakeem
19-06-2005, 07:25:PM
nah, he's perfect for the role because is just that, an American who's never even punched anybody in his life who gets dragged into this world of the Firms and and after getting beat a few times, realizes he's not made of glass and starts punching people himself. and the way Elijah fights is very realistic cause he's just throwing punches with no fighting posture or anything (Y)

Elijah Wood was pretty damn convincing in Sin City so it doesn't surprise me that he can pull this off easy.

dude he just stood there with a stupid look on his face and he didn't even talk, how can you say that, I mean it was kinda hard to do a bad work considering what he had to do :nape:

Hakeem
21-06-2005, 11:22:PM
yeah, but have in mind that the movies he did before were the lord of the ring movies, in which he had a terribly gay face and almost kisses Sam like 20 times between the 3 movies. from that, he does Sin City, and yes, he doesnt talk, but he looks truly creepy (Y)

Elijah Wood is taking some really brutal parts now with this and Sin City - trying to shake of his hobbit image I guess - and I have to commend him for it. Looks like he'll avoid the Mark Hamill curse. I dont particularly like the look of this film though and it's getting poor reviews.

Hakeem
12-09-2005, 02:28:AM

Edit: I checked and Roger Ebert gave it 3.5 out of 4 stars but it has only a 45% @ Rotten Tomatoes, with a 50% from the top reviewers

yep. it started this weekend already but very limited in NY, Chicago and LA. Yeah, their only showing it in 2 theaters in LA and since I'm too lazy to drive all the way to Hollywood (especially with how the gas prices are), I'm hoping they have it around here sooner or later.

in England? cause its getting great reviews here  Yeah, sorry, I can only speak for England as I the only American mag I read is Rolling Stone. Empire, The Times and The Sunday Times each gave it two out of five stars only, but then I suppose we are used to this sort of hooliganism more than in the US.

I agree, the Football Factory shows things closer to what they really are.

EDIT: Well I made this comment minutes before I actually saw the film :$ now that I've seen it I can say I was surprised how alot of it resembles the real thing, even going to details like including black members in the Zulu Army. Great film I can say.
