Robbie Keane first rose to prominence with Wolverhampton Wanderers, ................................... prompting a Premiership bidding war in the summer of 1999. Aston Villa balked at the £6 million asking price - still a British record for a teenager - whilst Alex Ferguson famously declared he'd pay no more than 500,000 and play him in the reserves.

The aim is to see a return to form - difficult when you have a squad ravaged by injury and suspension.

Sir Alex Ferguson again goes into a football match this season, his squad not boasting a clean bill of health.

Fresh from the disappointment that Rio Ferdinand’s eight-month ban has not been reduced, Ferguson gears up for the visit of Spurs on Saturday with an all too frequently occurring selection headache. The United boss could be without eight first-team players this weekend.

Keane, Ronaldo, Saha, Djemba-Djemba, Kleberson and Fortune are suffering from injury, while Gary Neville and Rio Ferdinand remain suspended.

”There are quite a few injuries,” Ferguson told us. “There is a lot of patching up to do. What I am trying to do is getting 16 fit lads, we are not going to be taking any chances with injuries. We can’t afford to. There is a bit of biting the bullet at the moment.

”Roy Keane started doing a bit of training this week and hopefully he will be back soon. Djemba-Djemba came back from Cameroon carrying an injury. Kleberson got injured in training and Ronaldo got a knock last week in the Derby game which tightened up the injury he picked up in the previous match against Porto.

”Gary Neville is suspended and obviously Rio is out and Fortune we know is injured for the season.

”There is a bit of biting the bullet at the moment,” said Sir Alex. “In saying that, we still have plenty of quality in the attacking sense. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is much better now, and we’ve got van Nistelrooy, Giggs with Forlan and Bellion to come in.”

One attacking option United have been deprived of recently is Louis Saha. The £12.8m signing has been hampered by an Achilles injury. The former Fulham forward requires rest so as to avoid an operation, risking playing the Frenchman is not a one Sir Alex is willing to take.

”The Louis Saha injury is one that we are having to bite the bullet on. It’s one of those injuries that, if we don’t address it now, it may mean an operation for the lad. We want to avoid that.”

Ferguson may have a battered and bruised squad, but the mood in the United camp is one of resilience.

”The players have trained very well this week,” he said. “They have shown a terrific attitude. It’s been very positive. You have to have that in training. You reinforce the good habits that they have always had.

”We’ve had some terrific sessions this week,” the manager concluded positively.

Sir Alex Ferguson has given a hint that United are now focusing on the critical season-saving FA Cup semi-final with Arsenal.

The Reds boss refuses to throw in the Premiership title towel but he has intimated that his campaign target has now been realigned.

"We have a really exciting semi-final with Arsenal coming up and the players will want to be in the right form for something like that," he said.

"As individuals they'll want to play in that match. But we have still got to chase second place if we can't get first in the league.

"Winning the title is not out of the question but we have made it difficult for ourselves.

Form

"We have to concentrate on getting our form back. If we play healthier football it will return and we can take it from there.

"Spurs at Old Trafford tomorrow is a good game to turn the tide. We have a great record against them."

Ferguson is hoping that he'll have captain Roy Keane back to drive away the demons of two monumental blows with the 4-1 derby defeat against City following on from the crushing Champions League exit at the hands of Porto.

The Irishman missed the Porto draw at Old Trafford that KO'd the Reds from Europe because of suspension.

He wouldn't have made the Champions League line up anyway after suffering a hamstring injury against Fulham in the FA Cup two weeks ago that cost him his place in the derby XI.

Optimism

But the midfielder has given Ferguson cause for optimism in his recovery.

"I want our important players back and Roy is an important player for us," said the United manager.

"I am hopeful he will be able to return against Spurs."

Gary Neville will complete his four-match ban after the Tottenham fixture and a lack of numbers at the back means a reprieve for the back line that shipped four goals at Eastlands against City.

"Mikael Silvestre wasn't 100 per cent fit against City after missing four matches with ankle ligament trouble," Fergie added.

"But you often get that at this stage of the season where you have to play players with injuries.

"But I am expecting him to be ready for Spurs."

I hear you, but thats the media for you, always finding a scapegoat.

Giggs has been good all season for United, and credit to Solskjaer for setting up the goal, his first start since returning I believe.

However I think United are going to need more goals, I don't see us keeping a clean sheet against Spurs.

I'm just glad our defence shut down Keane, Defoe and Kanoute. Good possessioning takes much pressure off the back four.

Crissy scored from approx. the same spot as Wright-Philips, maybe a bit closer. He curled it as it banged off the left post and in, might've shaved a Spurs defender and changed direction a little bit. Bellion's goal was very, very calm... almost like Henry whom I have heard him being compared with.

Great game by United. Had a feeling Spurs underestimated the power of ManU, as I heard somewhere in reference to Michael Owen, u can lose form but u cannot lose class, and that is exactly what Spurs' fault was today. They figured they were simply coming in to kick a man while he was down, not knowing that he held in his grip a hand grenade.
Anyway, next week u play arsenal, now that will be a real test, but for me as an arsenal fan, its just nice to see the United of old, it would have been a shame if u came into the Arsenal game with a defeat, now we are assured of a display and whoever wins can feel some sense of achievement.
Ive always said u need great opponents to have the oppurtunity to do great things, having a collapsing united in this potentially great season sort of took the lustre out of it. Good job guys.

I think the title race is still on . . . Never write us off. This is the performance I`ve been waiting for. And eventough Giggs looked amazing, seriously, it was only 75 % of his best. But then again, it was good enough. The only players that dissapointed me was RvN and Forlan. RvN played more and more like Heskey, poor touches and crumbled, while Forlan can`t keep his concentration in front of goals.

What title race.
Even if ManU beats Arsenal they would still be nine points behind and Chelsea still to play.
That scenario means either ManU will fall 12 or 11 points behind if they lose or draw to Chelsea, or Arsenal will increase their lead over Chelsea if ManU wins or draw.

Either way, there are only two teams in the title race, and Manchester isn't one of them. Beating Chelsea and Arsenal would not do a thing to the title race for ManU, if Arsenal continues to play well.

Say whatever you want, we`ve been in this situation before, 12 points behind, at third place with less than 10 matches to go, and we still managed to kick ass in the end. When we were 4 points clear a the top of the table, there was no talk of missing Beckham then.

ya... everybody keeps on saying that, but u must realize that this is real life, not a manager game, players don't always train, gain experience, and IMPROVE. Think about it, Wayne Rooney, Michael Owen, they were all amazing at 16 or 18, but look at them now, they haven't improved much in a few seasons. Especially Owen, I dont think he's as good as he was when he was 18 or so.

Things don't always work that way, and who knows if Ronaldo will improve to become the best player in the world or will he stay at the same level, we don't know. We must wait and see...

I'm not being negative or anything about Ronaldo I'm just trying to say that u never know how a player changes... He has improved massively this season. Hes changed from the young boy with 20+ stepovers with no crosses. Into the Mature young skilful crosser of the ball. He no longer dives, and plays more as a team than as one player. He is only 19 and to say there wont be a significant improvement is very doubtful. Players are spose to reach there peak at 28, well.....

I'm also amazed how the game ended without a booking for him (didnt notice one). His tackles were not the best today, I think the win vs Fulham or draw vs Porto was his sharpest. But its not like Rio never screws up... I remember a few blunders from him but nobody changed their name to Rio Hater.

3-0, eh? I'm not sure if the scoreline flattered us a bit because from what match tracker was saying Spurs were giving a good account of themselves in the 2nd half, but the highlights later showed just a couple of Spurs shots all game. The shots being Michael Brown's long range effort and Ziege's open header which he missed.

It could also have been more though. But I'll gladly take 3 goals for and as importantly, if not more so, a clean sheet. Particularly seeing as the clean sheet was against a Spurs team that seem to have little difficulty scoring at the moment.

Giggs capped of a fine performance with a very nicely taken goal. I was a bit concerned before because it seemed that we were creating chances but they weren't coming off, but Giggs settled some nerves for a while with that finish. Giggs had probably his best game for a while. He was playing superbly at the start of the season but had gone off the boil in the past few matches. It was good to see him play a game like that though, it shows he still has the game he had 5yrs ago. :D

O'Shea also seemed to have his best match all season. I was a bit concerned that he had lost his touch from last season, but hopefully this performance will help him rediscover that form.

Ronaldo's goal... What can you say? It was an incredible shot, and match tracker could hardly do it justice. Watching the highlights, I knew he'd scored before but I was convinced that he was going to cross from that position and he stuck the ball. I've seen plenty of goals that curl in around the keeper, but this one curled away from him. Keller got a touch, but the ball went in off the post. It was an incredible goal.

Good to see Bellion getting on the scoresheet too. If he could improve his technique he could be a useful asset because his pace would obviously cause anyone problems.

Nice result though, 3-0. Good to get a win too. :)

Was quite confusing on match tracker with there being 2 Keane's and 2 Brown's playing. You could tell if it was Roy tackling Michael, or Robbie tackling Wes.
