northstar 22-03-2004, 12:47:PM lets go blues! :D
Will this be EPL or CL style? Bigger things are on the line here so CL I think. Scrappy.
Bummy_JaB 22-03-2004, 12:52:PM Yea Ranieri will play defensive like he did against suttgart. But this aint stuttgart so I think Arsenal will pull off a 2-0. Henry and Pires to score.
northstar 22-03-2004, 01:01:PM I dont think Ranieri will be that defensive. He knows Arsenal can cut open defenses a lot better than stuttgart.

Frostwolf 22-03-2004, 08:00:PM Duff is the main threat, Freddie and Ralph need to be on the top of their games.
renege 22-03-2004, 08:11:PM I wonder if Arsene Wenger has given any thoughts to playing both wingbacks in midfield and using Pires upfront with Henry, especially as both Chelsea wingers are on form.
Therefore a team like this, just for the away match.
---------------------Henry--------------------------
-------------------Pires-----------------------------
Cole--------Edu-----------Vieira-------------Lauren
Clichy-------Cygan-------Campbell-----------Toure.
Don't know what you guys think, but I think that team would be solid defensively, and Arsenal have to take this game as a typical away CL game tactically and keep the opposition from scoring.
Frostwolf 22-03-2004, 08:15:PM He'd never make such a drastic, untried change before such a big game.
Barring injuries, I'd expect:
--------------------Lehmann---------------------
-Lauren------Campbell-----Toure------Cole-
-Ljungberg---Gilberto--Vieira--------Pires--
-----------------Henry-Bergkamp--------------
Edu for Gilberto and Reyes for Bergkamp for the second leg.
renege 22-03-2004, 08:19:PM I agree, but I don't think many people think Ljungberg can cope with Duff, and Jesper has burned Cole on many occasions.
What's his plan to counteract that?
Wenger may not be personally arrogant, but his tactics are, he tends to believe that teams should be concerned about Arsenal's attack rather than vice versa.
enigma 22-03-2004, 08:30:PM i think we'll draw or lose this leg and hit them back on the 2nd leg.
but i want to be optimistic.
2-0 to us.
Le Bob and Paddy.
ogsimon 22-03-2004, 08:32:PM we own these
tuomas706 22-03-2004, 08:45:PM i cant predict this game as arsenal have won the 3 past ones this season and these games might go either way now

Thats pretty dumb considering that chelsea havent beaten arsenal for ages, should we play a 9 - 1 formation just to deal with jesper who has actually played on the left side for chelsea in recent games against arsenal so what games was he burning cole?. Duff is obviously so good that no one can cope with him, so who do we put in then, and btw isnt it lauren a defender that'll be dealing with him mostly? Just have another pop at arsenal for having a pop sake, and move on.
renege 22-03-2004, 09:47:PM You can disagree without the insults dude. I am not fighting you.
Make your points, it's not Oxford vs Cambridge.
Frostwolf 22-03-2004, 09:49:PM Gronkjaer never crosses though. According to Rob he might be the only winger who doesn't cross.
Of course with Duff back it makes it very much more interesting, but I have to disagree with you about Freddie - he's the best out of the front four when it comes to defence and commitment. And he's got the pace to keep up with Duff. Lauren doesn't.

TOON ARMY 23-03-2004, 01:54:AM I've noticed during the season that Arsenal's biggest weakness is Jens Lehmann. He has a tendancy to punch and rush out for corners and crosses, etc. Bolton took advantage of this, thus feeding plenty of crosses into the Arsenal box. Most teams have noticed this weakness but haven't been very lucky in exploiting it.
Basically Chelsea need to get as many crosses into the box as possible.
The Arsenal forwards are very reliant on threw balls and neat passes from the mid-field. If Chelsea can stop the Arsenal mid-field from playing then i think they have a decent chance of winning.

KoreaJjang 24-03-2004, 04:39:PM Claudio Ranieri has confirmed that Marco Ambrosio will continue in goal for Chelsea in the Champions League quarter-final first leg clash with Arsenal.
The Italian goalkeeper, who arrived at Stamford Bridge from Chievo last summer, has played in the Blues' last two Premiership matches and retains his place against the Gunners.
Compatriot Carlo Cudicini (broken hand) and Scottish stopper Neil Sullivan (bruised leg) are both injured.
Dutch striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink is ruled out with a hamstring injury.
Meanwhile Arsenal striker Dennis Bergkamp is poised to make his first start in a Champions League away game for 13 months at Stamford Bridge.
Bergkamp, who does not fly, is expected to partner Thierry Henry up front, with Jose Reyes on the bench against Chelsea.
Otherwise, manager Arsene Wenger is still without Sylvain Wiltord and Ray Parlour, while Jeremie Aliadiere is not yet quite back in contention after a thigh injury, but Martin Keown is back in the squad.
Chelsea (from): Ambrosio, Melchiot, Terry, Gallas, Desailly, Huth, Bridge, Babayaro, Lampard, Makelele, Parker, Geremi, Cole, Gronkjaer, Duff, Crespo, Gudjohnsen, Mutu, Sullivan.
Arsenal (from): Lehmann, Stack, Lauren, Toure, Campbell, Cygan, Keown, Cole, Clichy, Vieira, Gilberto Silva, Edu, Pires, Ljungberg, Reyes, Bentley, Henry, Bergkamp, Kanu.

Wenger's plea to referee
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has pleaded with referee Manuel Enrique Mejuto Gonzalez not to ruin their Champions League game against Chelsea.
Wenger thinks the Spaniard will over-react to the physical nature of the contest and book several players.
"For people to enjoy watching, it must be fluent as that is what they are used to in England," said Wenger.
"Should 40,000 fans and 22 players have to adapt to the referee or the reverse? But it may take him a while to adapt."
He added: "It will be a Premiership-style game but with an invited referee.
"He may be surprised by some of the challenges in the game that are normal in the Premiership."

This is the CL, Arsene. Think you can change the officals mindset to call it like an EPL game? :brow: :p
northstar 24-03-2004, 05:03:PM This is my lineup. BBC sugests Geremi instead of Parker.

Gudjohnson with great hustle. I thought his ball was going to curl wide!
Frostwolf 25-03-2004, 03:16:AM Gudjohnsen charges down Lehmann's attempted clearance and scores. Quite similar to Viduka's goal earlier this season.
shokz 25-03-2004, 03:16:AM Lehmann came out(out of his box) to kick it, but Eidur was too close and it ended up hitting Eidur, then Gudjohnsen chased the ball and did a nice finish on an open goal.

bjmenge 25-03-2004, 03:55:AM I'll take this result. An away scoring draw, with Henry a near non-factor. (Y)
shokz 25-03-2004, 03:57:AM Lehmann doesn't look on-form, his performance vs Bolton and Chelsea werent up to his standard.
Many individual mistakes by him in both matches, I hope Manchester United can take advantage of that on Sunday.
manutd4eva 25-03-2004, 03:57:AM It's not the end of the world for Chelsea. They just have to try and shut out Arsenal and score at least one goal at Highbury, which will be very difficult.
I feel sorry for Ranieri.:(
$teauA 25-03-2004, 03:58:AM Chelsea are royally screwed now they have to get a 2-2 or 3-3 or something like that or win @ Arsenal which just seems impossible for them I think that it will be 2-2 and Chelsea will go through without beating Arsenal :D.

enigma 25-03-2004, 04:01:AM not the most entertaining match by any means. but a decent result, we need to score two goals at home to really feel secure, i think.
the chelsea goal wasn't lehmann's fault, it was gudjohnsen's bravery.
nice header by bob, never expected anything to happen there.
Bobby 25-03-2004, 04:01:AM Stack for goalkeeper this weekend.
Thank God for Pires (H)
Keemo 25-03-2004, 04:04:AM Lemon and complacency are the only Arsenal weaknesses. In every other way they are damn unstoppable.
Arsenal is so much more creative and effecient on attack. I don't think Chelsea is good enough to beat them. Not this season anyway.
Bummy_JaB 25-03-2004, 04:07:AM PIRES IS THE MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :rockman: :rockman:
Toure and Bridge were mos def the best players in that match
enigma 25-03-2004, 04:10:AM i thought Edu and Vieira played superb today, winning most of the tackles they put in.
Bridge and Duff were good as well.
i should say: Toure had a great match
Pires having a normal match according to him played almost as well as Toure...

any chance of the Real Monaco goals aswell ? :p
enigma 25-03-2004, 05:10:AM Backheel from Keown to Parlour, Parlour to shoot and get it on-target, Cygan to get rebound. :mrpimp:
Hendrik 25-03-2004, 05:12:AM Lemon was a bit unlucky when Arsenal conceded the goal. The CBs should've cleared the ball, they didn't and then he came out of his box too late. :S
Keemo 25-03-2004, 05:18:AM I just think Lemon get's "flustered" too easy. He acts like he has ants in his pants when a striker gets in his face
Not all Lemons fualt tho...was complacency on the CB's part too. Arsenals back line can do a bit of ball watching and lazy back passes from time to time.

I always watch the game which is on either Sky Sports 1 or 2, because the goals from Sky Sports Xtra are always shown after at around 10:00pm GMT so i dont miss anything since the scum at ITV don't do highlights on Wednesdays.
SB9Dragon 25-03-2004, 05:26:AM Thanks for the highlights Shockz....
Wonder why Lehmann ventured so far out of his box, he definately paid for that though luckily Pires can also score with his head...
Next game in Highbury and I think Arsenal should be able to win that game and go through...
northstar 25-03-2004, 05:48:AM Decent match from both teams. Vieira vs. Makalele was awesome.
Both teams had trouble breaking through the good defenses.

Hahahaha!! I'm watching Arsene talking to Sky Sports, he's literally nearly lost his voice from all that shouting.
Hahaha, yeah! Also, I think he was eating on some Halls (http://www.diabetesstore.com/images/products/p_halls_mntn.jpg) for his throat.
Is it just me, or is Michelle Lissel really a hottie? :rockman:

Sky Reloaded 25-03-2004, 10:47:AM Good match, definitely worth seeing, especially if you are used to Arsenal scoring 3-4 goals per game. It was fun seeing their attack shut down by Chelsea and their excellent midfielders, Lampard and Makelele, dropping back to support. Too bad there was no fighting, I guess there will be in the 2nd leg, Lampard doesn't take **** from noone.
PS - Parker is good, but far too hesitant.
I am happy with the result. Chelsea kept Henry quiet and played a high defensive, high pressure game.
Not the best home performance but I think Chelsea's superior away record in the Champions League will see Chelsea through to play Real Madrid in the Semi Finals.
PaPaGeorGeo 25-03-2004, 11:54:AM The Only Thing is that you guys will have to beat us at home to go through which could be difficult for you boys in blue. It should be a good game though and hopefully SBS show it live
northstar 25-03-2004, 12:03:PM yeh well its Arsenal undefeated in 17 matches vs. Chelsea against Chelsea's awesome away form.
Parker was a little over his head for some reason. He looked nervous, and made some bad passes that broke up a lot of possession.
bjmenge 25-03-2004, 12:05:PM Somehow, I doubt Chelsea will be able to shut down Henry twice in a row.
Bobby 25-03-2004, 12:13:PM Aliadiere should play
bjmenge 25-03-2004, 12:17:PM You serious, Bobby?

He tires them out, and Henry comes in for the kill.

VanTheMan 25-03-2004, 03:30:PM chelsea had hteir chances after their goal.but arsenal are too deadly on the break and grabbed an important goal.
the pendulum swings in arsenal's way.
