Wow the MLS will play with the international standard rules. You just have to add relegation then it will be fine.

MLS is not ready for relegation/promotion and likely won't be ready within the next ten years. After that, we'll see.

I don't think you will have relegation/promotion ever. In other sports it isn't so it won't be at MLS.

Why isn't there any relegation at NBA,NHL etc. Can someone explain this to me?

I dont know but the NFL needs relagation bad. (AZ Cardinals anyone?)

There isn't any relegation in (NBA) because there's only one pro-basketball league. The only thing you'll see get relegated from the NBA is the crappy players, who then get get relegated to a basketball development league (NBDL). The same thing applies to really good players in the (NBDL) who are ready and want a chance to showcase there skill in the (NBA).

The MLS will never have relegation. Relegation just isn't part of sports culture in the USA, and it never will be. People wouldn't support teams that aren't in the top flight which would cause severe financial problems for many teams. They would look at these teams like they look at Minor League teams in baseball.

If any of the big leagues in the USA had a vote whether to allow relegation or not, every single owner would vote no. In the NFL, there is one professional league, and that is it. If you aren't in that, you either have to go to Canada or you just don't play football. Owners would be against relegation because they would lose out on the TV contracts, ticket sales, etc. if their team was relegated. Relegation just wouldn't work here in any sport. Owners would be against it, players would be against it, and your average American fan would be against it as well.

They can't add relegation.

Have you seen the a-league? Only one team could handle the MLS money wise.

Excellent news. (Y)

This is great too:

The MLS Competition Committee also eliminated the 3+1 substitution rule used since the League’s inception, which enabled teams to substitute three field players and an additional goalkeeper substitution (if necessary) during the course of a match. Beginning with the 2004 regular season, teams will only be permitted three total substitutions, which is also in line with the international standard.

Thank God.

NY/NJ (are they still called that? heh) cheated with that last year, IMO.

Actually, I think they just go by "MetroStars" now.

I have a feeling that that incident was the final straw in getting rid of the extra sub.

Good job MLS!! There is still alot more work to do tho...and national attention to get.

Good for the MLS to abide to some International rules...

No more cheating the 3+1 Sub system... Metrostars and KC  :D

Good stuff for the MLS. The league can only go up. Now only if the Earthquakes move out of that dump Spartan Staduim.

What are you talking about? Eddie Gaven is the best MLS goalkeeper of all time. 0.00 goals allowed per game career average. (H)

No kidding. What I never understood about Spartan is what is up with that wall next to the sideline on the camera side. It obstructs the view during ESPN broadcasts. It's like three yards from the sideline, someone could run out of bounds and crack his skull on that thing.

About today's developments:

Wow, MLS is growing up! Not only did they drop golden goal, they also got rid of the 3+1 subs rule. That means we will never see Eddie Gaven "goalkeeping" for the MetroStars again. Now, how 'bout one 12 team division for 2005?

They will, we're waiting for it to warm up so we can start building their new soccer specific stadium. That has been our only drawback is playing in a baseball stadium where the field does not meet the MLS dimensions. It's suppose to be completed by the end of this season, so expect us in the MLS within 2 years.

Good.

Rochester is a good market for the sport.

I have wondered the same thing as well. If you have been there it only looks more confusing. I have seen football games and players run out of bounds and hit it all the time so I guess the same thing could happen at an Earthquakes game as well. The whole staduim is crap. It is pretty much like a bigger high school football field.

Also Seattle should get in the MLS. The Seattle Sounders are pretty big up there even for an A-league team and Seahawks Staduim is a great place to watch a game.

Chicago FIRE = Manchester United RED DEVILS
Los Angeles Galaxy = Arsenal GUNNERS

its the same thing, only difference is we put an Emphasis on the Nicknames rather then the City names :p

Wouldn't it be Manchester United Football Club and Arsenal Football Club?

Juan
30-03-2004, 10:55:PM
errr how so ?

The Red Devils
The gunners
The Rams
The foxes

all those are nicknames fans give thier teams for one reason or another

just like in the MLS
but in america we refer to a team by its nickname rather then by its Name

instead of chicago we call the The Fire

anyways MLS should have stole nicknames from other european leagues instead of using names like galaxy, fusion, mutiny and rapids:D i usually make fun of nfl team names like tampon bay bucketqueers, oakland masterbaters, greenbay wankers, san francisco 69ers, dallas cowgirls(which people already call them in TX) etc..:funny: :jambo:

Juan
30-03-2004, 11:56:PM
no

because u give the team a nickname based on something that identifies with the team

i.e

chicago Fire cus of the great Fire that destroyed the city of Chicago alooooooong time ago...

althoug a few dont make sense :S ill admit that

like Miami Fusion, or LA Galaxy :|

Juan
31-03-2004, 12:07:AM
well, now by the owners, cus its expected, its part of the ritual now ;)

but i can garantee that if the fans dont like it, and/or it has nothing to do with the city the team is from, they will chaneg it ;)
