Its obvious the refs have tried and will try anything in there power to have an all western european final.. There main goal is to eliminate all eastern teams. But guess what?? They have failed misserably so far..

Mrkovic, If this is true why did Romania (Eastern country) get a penalty in the final minutes last night, against England (Western Country)? And you still went thru (unlike Norway), so what are complaining about? Those thru so far are Italy (southern central European), France (west), Holland (North western), Spain (west), Portugal (west), Romania (East), Turkey (East) and Yugoslavia (East). That's 3/8 countries who are Eastern. That's from 5 Eastern teams in the competition, 3 Scandinavian teams, and 8 Western. Thus the rate for Eastern teams going thru is 60%, 62.5% for Western countries, and 0% for Scandinavian countries. A truly proportional quater final system would have 4 Western teams, 3 Eastern Teams, and 1 Scandinavian teams. Thus it is Scandinavia that is unfairly treated here!

How come then there isn't a SINGLE eastern european ref?? There are certainly plenty of western european and scandanavian refs, but not ONE eastern european ref.... that tells you something..

And the ref isnt the one that scored the Spanish goals, the Yugoslavian team made the mistake of trying to defend a 3-2 lead. Technical teams are lousy in defending, I have never seen a team go through with 7 goals against in three matches before.

A nice QF though, Holland against Yugoslavia, a repeat perhaps of the 1/16 final of worldcup 98?

I think u have made a good point. But i wouldn't say it was western/eastern bias but Big nation/Little nation. See the list below:

1) Italy's dodgy penatly against Turkey. I am NOT a Turkish fan (I think they are too violent), but it was a blatent dive by F.Inzaghi

2) Dutch Penalty v. Czech Republic. I know the dutch player did get a very very slight tug on his shirt, but i don't think it was a penalty as there is often little stuff in the penalty area. The dutch player did a very well performed double mid-air sumersalt (does he do gymnastics??)

3) France V. Denmark. Wiltord was offside for france's 3rd Goal. It was probably irrelevant, buta wrong decision none-the less.

4) Spain. Spain. Spain. Spain. Spain...... Oh my God... they get soooo many free kicks for blatent dives. The best example of this was that AbeLARDo penalty v. Yugoslavia (note the presence of LARD in his name denoting the fact he is a fat, useless b*****d). See also many other incidents invloving Alfonso diving and Medieta punching and pushing Dragan Stojkovic. Further evidence was seen in the Spain v. Solvenia match, where the spainish had severe leg problems, which meant they had to dive when a Slovenian came within 2 meters of them

Incidently before people start saying SORE LOSER ect., i am an IRISHMAN, and so support the Republic Of Ireland. So I feel i an expressing a neurtal opinion

It is, in fact, much worse that when England play. This may be because England fans are so notourious, that there is always a big police prescne when ever thay play. Turkey should now have a similar such stima/notoriety attached when thay play.

I have never seen a team play such ugly, nasty football as Yugoslavia. They have individual players of great talent - but as a team, they are disgraceful. Very unprofessional...

I'm only going to weigh in on this cultural stuff once, to make my point. I can't believe you guys get so worked up about this stuff.
It's nothing less than disheartening in this supposedly enlightened day and age to see aspersions cast on a regular basis over people's origin or ethnicity. Most reasonably intelligent people have long recognized that a person's traits are learned, usually from their parent. And that parent in turn learns it from her or his parents. In other words, if people around you repeatedly tell you at a young and impressionable age that someone foreign is ignorant or stupid or mean, you're eventually going to believe it.
But it's all a bunch of crap. The only thing that sustains cultural emnity is the hatred itself. Your average croatian wife beater is just as much of an a***hole as your average English wife beater. Your average dutch pickpocket probably talks about the same things over a beer as your average Turkish pickpocket. People are people. If you wanna say the ref was a crook, point out that it was the ref who was a crook, not the entire nation he happens to come from.
I'm from Canada. We're full of a**holes. Our prime minister basically ordered peaceful protesters pepper sprayed because he didn't want them distrubing Indonesian scumbag Suharto at a conference.
