You cant go starting a 14 year old boy this way. If he plays bad then everyone will say he's a failure, stuff like that. Give him 20 minutes here, 15 minutes there, and he'll settle. And when he is 18, you can think about starting him.

I bet Adu will get the second half, but not the start.

I hope it's a great high-scoring game. Something fast & fun to get the season underway.

I dont really watch MLS, but the hype on Adu has made me tune to the game, hopefully its a good game and alot of people tune in to watch it so the ratings can be high and can send ESPN a message like somebody said.

Hearts_FC
03-04-2004, 11:42:PM
Will be watching this game. I think fred will get 20 mins in the second half...if they are sensible. San Jose will probably put 2 defenders on him leaving a space which D.C may exploit.
Don't know much about these teams though but I'll go for a two nil utd win.

VanTheMan
04-04-2004, 12:13:AM
adu will be maybe put on depending upon whether dc require a goal or not.
he may get 20-30 minutes of play
hopefully he'll create an impact like c.ronaldo did against bolton

DC 123-3 San Jose

04-04-2004, 12:24:AM
If he does not start, then there is no stinking point in watching ABC today !

I agre, by not starting him, you are probably denting the hype....fans will be a bit dissapointed.

Here' s a crappy piece of information: Even though the DC United stadium seats 53000, they are goina close the gates after around 24000 or so enter. Why? Next year they will get a 25000 seater and want to get fans into the habbit of buying tickets early.....HYP MY FOOT...if you can' t watch him despite the fact that there are seats, what the heck else can you do to show your support HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!:D

If you guys are expecting young Adu to feature in most games, then sorry but you'll be sadly disappointed. The guy is barely a teenager. The worse thing that could happen to him is if he does play a lot, it'll ruin him. To an extent, Wayne Rooney is being played too much for Everton I think, or he was.

Cristiano doesnt feature hardly in every game and he's 19!
I bet if Sir Alex had Freddy on his books, he wouldnt play until he's atleast 17-18 depending on how good he is. But ur right the Mls is very different so we'll have to wait and see! But no waay should he start!

If you dislike MLS and everything about it so much, then don't watch it and don't talk about it. It's not that hard of a concept.

That is it. He does love the league he is just not man enough to admit to it. I mean why would he waste his time talking so much crap about it if he hated it. It is just the First Grade love policy. You pretend to hate something but you really like it.

One thing I admire about the Americans, and I'm not too fond wit them, is that they don't dive. They play Men's soccer.

It seemed like the players didn't want to pass the ball to Adu or something. He looked like he was left alone the whole game. Oh well. This is his first match and he's got time to adapt.

Hope MLS expands to Toronto

Bummy_JaB
04-04-2004, 06:24:AM
Yea I noticed that too. Convey could have easily done several 1-2 passes with Adu. But for some reason he didn't give up the ball. Adu had a very nice pass that could have resulted in a goal.

I don't think that MLS wants to expand into Canada just yet first they have to do it in the USA then maybe Canada but I don't really want them to, I mean Canada is big enough make your own damn leagues, I mean you have a team in the NBA like four teams in the NHL that's pretty sad considering the size of the country, you guys should have your own leagues.

I watched soccercentral and their US soccer correspondent said if Toronto builds their soccer stadium then it's guaranteed that they will expand there.

The reason we don't have a league is purely economical. No one wants to commit to it as a lot of money is involved and we don't have the economy the US has. That's the same reason why we lost 1 team in the NBA and lost 2 teams in the NHL.

the size of the country is absolutely irrelevant...Canada is big in size but only has a population of 30 million, and the majority of that 30 mil is centered around only 3 major metropolitan area. That means there is essentailly only 3 locations that could realistically support more proffessional sports franchises (not including hockey, that's another story..) I mean, that's why we don't have our own damn leagues..

Very good for the first game of the season. DC United are really looking like a different team this year under Nowak. Jaime Moreno is back! What a game from him... Eskandarian with a great goal - this is an important season for him. He will need to establish himself in this league and prove that he was worth the first overall draft pick DC United selected him with in the 2003 Draft.

Nice game from Convey (except for missing the open net in the 2nd half). For San Jose, Mulrooney, Ekelund and Mullan played well in midfield. DeRosario was very active in the game. Donovan didn't get enough touches.

Horrible referreeing, but anyone who follows MLS has come to expect this. Overall an excellent game... large, vocal crowd, pitch in excellent condition (check back in August), no football lines (check back in September), the two teams really going for it and giving their best. I'd love to see what these two teams will look like in mid-season form with a few games under their belt.

PS - anyone else think Dellacamera and Wynalda should do US national team game broadcasts? Listening to Stoner and Balboa in the Poland game, they left a lot to be desired.

04-04-2004, 06:54:AM
Yea. I can think of Toronto and Vancouver as the only teams that can support a team financially. Funny thing is there is major doubt as to whether Toronto would bring in fans that support would their home team. I think that's the major stumbling block in making our own league.

Maybe cause the FA cup had only 2 of the best teams in the world. Yea if u compare the 2 there is no denying which is better. But I don't think the DC vs San Jose match was boring at all.

If you have Fox Sports World you can see all the MLS highlights at 12 I think after the other game.

Wow, what a disappointment. This couldve been a great chance for soccer to show itself off to a mass audience, and it blew it. Especially have an jerkoff ref, who was trying to get some attention by giving out stupid red cards.

yeah the game was good but the ref ruined it he should get a two game suspension from the MLS

I saw the game and it was very interesting, I can't believe all those goals that DC wasted at the start of the 2nd half :o
As for Adu, he didn't do anything spectacular and he looked confused, but he's just getting started.

Adu had a good pass...top quality pass, shame the finish wasen't there.

I think the game slowed down cause DC dropped back to defend that goal lead, Adu played upfront alone. It will be interesting to see him and and another attacker upfront together.

Adu had a very good first touch, and that one play where he fed the ball on the left wing to Kovalenko or whatever was perfect... just Kovalenko screwed it up.

But he looked like a fool when Agoos completely blocked him off the ball, and he really is a tiny guy.. He was fighting for a ball and the defender just basically stuck his arm out and Adu was helpless.

Otherwise, good game, good atmosphere as well.

To his credit he got up straight away and got on with it...no rolling about or protesting like some players twice his age.

Isn't that the truth?! he did put his hand up for a call though, but I don't mind that. Once he saw he wasn't going to get it, he went on with business. That's what i like about young players, they don't give a rip.

I remember Alan Smith from Leeds a few years back when they were doing well in the Champions League. He just played gritty and hard, and never asked for anything extra. That's how a player should be.

Too true.

Far to often do players act like they've been hit in the head with a brick when there's very little (if any) contact
