View Full Version : UEFA CUP QF 1st leg - PSV v's Newcastle United [P] & [R]
TOON ARMY 08-04-2004, 06:32:PM Sir Bobby's assessment of his former club PSV who he led to two Dutch titles as he returns tonight to put one over his former paymasters:
"It's a fine club run on fine principles by fine men. Winning two titles promoted my interests there and they were some of the greatest years of my life, my first two years back in club management after eight years with England."
Sir Bobby says that it was his time in Holland which made him the successful club manager he went on to become and he added: "I re-educated myself, working every day with the players. I enjoyed that after eight years in a different environment. It was back to the daily grind, which I relished."
Robson and his scouts have targeted Mateja Kezman as the dangerman, whilst the Newcastle boss reckons veteran Dennis Romedahl is still a big threat. "I know about Dennis, so I've brought some string along to tie his legs together," joked Sir Bobby.
"Seriously, I think it is going to be very close between two very good sides. I don't think either side will have much of an advantage going into the second leg. There will be nothing in it this time, I'm sure of that."
Looking at the general picture of Newcastle's achievements so far this season, Sir Bobby had a few more words for those critics who say United have under-achieved this season.
Our season hasn't finished yet," he insisted. "As things stand, we're fighting for fourth place in the Premiership and have a chance of making the UEFA Cup semi finals. I think the players have performed fantastically. Overall - and it annoys me a bit when people suggest otherwise - the players have done very well for me this season.
"I just wish people would look at where we are and put the whole thing into perspective. But people don't." Maybe, after the two games against PSV, they will!
Anyway i'm really looking foward to this.
Come on Newcastle
Andrew 08-04-2004, 06:35:PM C'mon You Geordies
Newcastle 2-1
Alan Shearer
Dyer

::Jason:: 08-04-2004, 06:38:PM really unpredictable game 'tis.
so Shearer is playing?
Andrew 08-04-2004, 06:41:PM From the NUFC Site
Alan Wants To Wipe Out England Memory
ALAN Shearer is hoping to erase the memory of his last appearance at the Philips Stadion when he lines up for United against PSV Eindhoven on Thursday.
Shearer was leading the line for England back in Euro 2000 when Kevin Keegan's side let a two-goal lead slip and eventually lost 3-2.
Shearer hasn't played at the Philips Stadion since that night more than four years ago, but he is confident of a better result this time around.
"I remember that night with England well, though as you can imagine it wasn't one of my greatest memories," said Shearer.
"I hope I can come away with a better result for Newcastle than I did for England when we play PSV on Thursday.
"PSV are a good side and will cause us problems, but I also believe there is more to come from this side as well. It'll be a close game to call, but hopefully we can come back to St. James' with a result that gives us a chance of progressing.
"We can improve, and I think we have to if we are going to win this competition.
"I've said from the moment we were beaten in the Champions League that we had to aim to win this competition, and that stays the same.
"It's been exciting getting through the rounds and it has got gradually tougher the further we've progressed, but I've gone on record as saying it's no good just getting to the final and thinking we've done well.
"If we get to the final and lose, then we may as well have lost in the first round. We are aiming to win the uEFA Cup, make no mistake about it, but we have to earn the right to do that."
Rangers_1873 08-04-2004, 06:46:PM 2 - 0 PSV, Kezman at the double

why wouldn't he ? :p
... well here it is then, our first major test in this UEFA Cup. A draw would be a good result for us away from home but we're definatly capable of that even winning.
We must score though, that's pretty vital. Monaco, Deportivo and even Chelsea have proved this week the importance of socring away from home.
Comon the toon.
pennington10 09-04-2004, 12:47:AM I predict a Bramble brace. Laugh at me all you like but his Euro scoring record is second to none.
I say 2-0 Newcastle. We have played well in the UEFA Cup not including those games against the Vikings.

Robben still injured, Vogel and Rommedahl not fit enough (just recovered from injury)
Newcastle: Given, Jenas, Shearer, Bellamy, Speed, Ambrose, Hughes, Bramble, Woodgate, Robert en Bernard. Don't know how they are placed on the field though
I hope 1-0 for PSV, but Shearer and Bellamy are very dangerous
shokz 09-04-2004, 02:17:AM What a goal from Kezman...
PSV 1-0 Newcastle.
Kezman on 15 min
Gary Speed just came close, good save keeper.
LuckyStrike 09-04-2004, 02:37:AM I want Newcastle to win but if PSV wins it's good for Dutch football. The Dutch will get points from UEFA the better PSV does. And in the end, that's good for Ajax.
buba3d 09-04-2004, 02:41:AM nice little finnish
$teauA 09-04-2004, 02:44:AM like i said for some reason dutch teams just do good in the uefa cup, i think that psv will advance to the semis no matter the score in the first leg.
shokz 09-04-2004, 02:48:AM Bramble should've been sent off for violent conduct.
Referee and the linesman didn't see it.
Yes, Jenas 1-1. :rockman:
That was some funny **** watching a couple of PSV fans going mad on the other side of the fence.
-
PSV should've had a penalty in the 53rd minute, Jenas handball.
Spurs4Life 09-04-2004, 03:48:AM PSV go overkill with the passing, play it along the backline to much, Newcastle was there for the taking tonight, although Woodgate and Bramble played superbly today.
PSVFOREVER 09-04-2004, 04:00:AM thanks ref for:
-not giving PSV a penalty at the start
-not giving Bramble a card for a clear elbow at v/d Schaaf
-giving Newcastle a freekick, from which they scored. Nothing happened
-not giving the penalty after Jenas' handball
God, refs love us:kader:
ShearerM4 09-04-2004, 04:21:AM lol good result for us.
2nd half was crap though. :kader:

wow cheers Shokz !! :rockman:
i missed the first half coz was at the Bdx - Valencia game
Great goal by Kezman, PSV should of got the penalty for the trip, and that was a cheap call by the ref to give the free kick which ended up being the goal for Newcaslte. And some missed chances by Bouma, and Kezman at the end there, but a good game, hopefully it will be a great game in St. James park. (H) And hopefully PSV do pull out the win !
(H)
m3th0d 09-04-2004, 05:21:AM what a goal by kezman! :p
i just hope psv can pull it off at St. James Park.
hanek45 09-04-2004, 06:11:AM Damnit I SO MUCH WISH I COULD SEE THIS FREAKIN GAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
-_-
SB9Dragon 09-04-2004, 06:11:AM A draw is sorta what I expected from this encounter though I still think that any team can go through.
hanek45 09-04-2004, 06:12:AM wtf?? how come I have4092 posts???????????? 2 hours ago I had 83 (+ the 109)???????????
m3th0d 09-04-2004, 08:37:AM rofl! why are you complaining?
it is what you wanted, no? :funny:
Soccer_Fan09 09-04-2004, 11:42:AM PSV, no offense but the odds are not good pulling something out at St. James Park, the only way I see PSV getting through is if they draw and win by away goals. St. Jaames Park is a fortress and always has been one for Newcastle
Andrew 09-04-2004, 11:52:AM Thx Shokz :ewan:
Great Goal by Kezman, Newcastle were fortunate that the ref didnt see the Bramble Elbow. It was quite funny when Van Der Shaaf(spelling?) fouled Bernard? and you could see all the PSV fans in the background jumping onto the Surrounding fence all pissed and whatever :funny:
Anyways it looked like a great game with plenty of chances, cant wait till the 2nd leg at St. James. I still have my money on Newcastle though.;)

yeah ... that guy going crazy and kicking into the fences  what a nutcase...
Well we are favourites to go throughnow with the game at home coming up... but Newcastle will have to stay on their toes. As the teams will probably be separated by the odd goal.
Hoping for a European night to remember at St James'
VanTheMan 09-04-2004, 04:08:PM all i want to see is english clubs dominate europe.
i think newcastle r hot fav to win the uefa cup with their present form.
Torsten Frings 09-04-2004, 05:38:PM I think Valencia should be the favourites, then Newcastle. Still...
pennington10 10-04-2004, 01:10:AM I am happy with the result. I can't for the life of me figure out why Bramble only does well in games in Europe. If we were playing Blackburn or someone yesterday he would have played like crap. Atleast now we can control our own destiny. St. James is a fort and we should be able to pull it out.
TOON ARMY 10-04-2004, 01:51:AM Great result just what we needed. Woodgate and Bramble were solid in defence and didn't look like conceding anymore after Kezmen's excellent finish.
Now the team should be confident of inflicting Arsenal's first loss on Sunday.

Also that is a nice new sig you have.
