Hmmmm Feel The Power Of African Soccer

Anyone tried the African Cup yet?

The title screen which comes up at the beginning features a picture of a rhino nudging a football along with his horn. It's fantastic.

Heh, it's a good picture for African football. African football is physical beyond belief. When you watch a Nigeria vs Cameroon match, and you see someone tackle with such venum on this skinny Kanu character...and Kanu gets up immediately 'next play please' then you know this is a different style of football. Ofcourse when an african team plays any other team and the tackle is made, the player probably gets a card and he thinks to himself, back home, that's a normal challenge. The world has to be exposed to this kind of soccer before it can be recognised in the WC.

Nigeria on the other hand must be among the most techniqual teams in the world.
Okocha that man is amazing!!!,he go a verey gifted left foot to (he is left footed rigth?).
Anyway I have never seen Nigeria played that physical.
U r Nigerian urself rigth?, so u probably know more about Nigerian football than me. But just IMO Nigaria is playing verey fair and nice football at least that what ave seen in the recent World cups

Since ISS on the N64, I've always played as Nigeria in computer football, I love them - Sunday Oliseh's goal against Spain in the last WC! The most brutal African team I've seen were Ghana - they were just ignoring the ball an launching into people's legs.

But South American league football is more vicious, partly because the crowd get in on the act too. Remember when the Colombian league had to stop mid-season cos refs were getting shot by snipers in the stands...it's almost impossible to watch Argentinian League because the whistle blows every 2 seconds. If it's not a foul, it's a dive.

But nothing tops English Sunday-League football for sheer violence. Loads of fat thug amateurs charging around headbutting each other. In England, if you want to play in a league and you're not Vinnie Jones, you have to join one of those evening leagues that play on floodlit sports centre astroturf pitches (where - in London at least - you end up on a team with an Australian keeper, a Kanu-like African playmaker and some Spanish guys running the midfield, so it's about football not violence) cos the official Sunday morning leagues are just too dangerous. I knew someone who played in them and a high tackle broke his THIGH. I've NEVER heard of a pro footballer breaking someone's thigh....have you SEEN a thigh bone??? You know the fat skinhead English drunks who turn up and trash town squares in Europe? That's what they do on Sunday mornings.

Yes I'm Nigerian, they are not the most physical in africa no. But then again, they don't really have a defence...hopefully the likes of Babayaro will change that. Yeah I remember Oliseh's goal...that was a missile. I believe Okocha is right footed...actually, he can use both feet equally as good, but his right is deadly. I think he is as good as a Zidane, Figo or Rivaldo. He is so unpredictable that is what is dangerous about him and he can do things with the ball that you didn't know were possible until you saw him do it. This world cup, should be good for Africa (i'm hoping) I'm going for Nigeria and Cameroon, to make it to the second round and possibly upset some european team. Should be an interesting WC. There are too many teams i'm cheering for.

Can you elaborate on this, it sounds really interesting. What season was it? Did any refs get shot? Was the whole season cancelled?

Drug baron Pablo Escobar had close connections with Atletico Nacional. Cartel bosses Gilberto and Miguel Rodriguez Orejuela held such influence over America de Cali that Miguel was president of the board of directors. Millonarios of Bogota were the hobby of another drug lord, Gonzalo Rodriguez Gacha.

The ref was Alvaro Ortega, he was assassinated in 1989 after giving a decision that angered one of the above bad guys. They called off the whole season as a result.

Also, a few years later, one of their top players was found tied up and shot dead in a gangland execution. But then, he had been doing part-time work as a hitman. Then there was Escobar, the guy who scored the own goal that put Colombia out of WC 1994, who got shot in a bar when he went home. Also, kidnappings of players and club directors happen from time to time. It's not exactly the MLS.
