Hmmmm PES - best since Kick Off 2

I've been playing PES non-stop now, except for work, since Sunday. What a fantastic game. I've only won about 8 of 35 games but I'm not getting frustrated or annoyed. You even get a sense of achievement with a draw after some staunch defending, or injury time equalizer.

Rarely have I played a football game (not since my previous footy fave Kick Off 2 on my old Amiga. Anyone else remember Kick Off 2?) that has had me jumping about, yelling 'What a scorcher!', after scoring a cracking shot, or 'Fantastic tackle.' after making a goal saving tackle (even if I was actually trying to foul the other player before he got into the penalty area, to save the goal); or shouting 'That was never a foul...', or 'Send him of, ref!', or 'What the hell was my defender doing there!!!'. Getting puzzled looks off my girlfriend as if I'd just lost the plot or something.

I don't think that this will stop for ages yet either, unlike FIFA where you think 'great shot' when you do it first but then you know what to do to score, as if it were scripted'.

Well done Konami.

I loved Kick Off 2! Even my old Amiga is trashed, I still play it on my PC, via an Amiga emulator sometimes... The ball did not stick to your feet, so you had to kick it around to dribble. This gave you so much freedom, too much at certain times maybe, but it was fun and required coordination. After getting used to it, playability and control were great although there was just one fire button built into the joysticks back then...

By the way who can forget that little doctor who rushes into the field after serious tackles...

The crowd noises, altough modest in terms of today's technology were still to the point and they actually motivated you. The chants before taking the corners, crowd cheer after a goal (Make sure the monitor's volume is at max, and look at your friend's face after you score a goal... ), or the booing after a foul (Awww, $%#$% here comes the doctor or the card!)

And there was no commentary, which is not necessary in a footy game in my opinion - Do you watch the game or play it actually? Do you want a pop corn with it, too? Thanks, keep the change...

Does anyone know what happened to Anco or Dino Dini (The creator of Kick Off Series, if I remember correctly...) ?

Thumbs up

maaaaaan remembering kick off 2 brought me to tears

in my opinion it is the number one football game EVERRRRRRR!!

even better than PES or whatever...because it was simple and to

the heart.....

there's nothing in the world like scoring a brilliant free kick which

curves into the top corner while the keeper watches.....

or having a crack that shaves the post and gets in....and u know

what was the best? PK's were sooo fun maan daaaaamn!

it had everything from kits design to competitions to world

cup... soggy fields...plastic pitch...4 players...coin toss...IT HAD WINDY CONDITIONS WHERE THE BALL CURVES!!!!

remember player manager ? the best management game that

nobody DARES to emulate..

i may seem exaggirating a bit but im serious...memories of anco united and alex reeves....dino dini and that poster of madger and the other

one of the referee whistling at the beginning of the game...with

the song oleee olee olee oleeeeeeeee

fweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet ( ref

whistles)

anco and dino dini should have conquered the world by now...we

wouldnt even had to take EA sport's $hit here.... but they let us

all down and the world wont forgive them for this....never!!!

SHEZ PANICKS

THAT GAME HAD ****ING PLAYER CAM.... SLOW MOTION REPLAYS...SUBS...OFFSIDE...PHYSIOS..INJURIES.....T ACTICS EDITOR.........

I'd just like to give everyone here reminicing about Kick Off 2 and Player Manager a big hug and handshake. Great to finally see some other gamers here who loved Dino Dini, Steve Screech and Anco!

Kick Off 2 was, and still is, the dog's bollocks - it stands on it's own as the greatest arcade football game of all time. Amazing that 11 years later the mighty EA Sports and Fifa still can't even have ball physics that match those in Kick Off.

It may not have the complexity of PES but Kick Off 2 had the same sheer playability and fun factor - what a brilliant game, and Shez - PLAYER MANAGER - what a brilliant game. I too have many, many fond Memories of Alex Reves and Anco United - I also loved taking my PM teams and then using them with the 'Return to Europe' expansion disc for Kick Off 2 and watched them face off against each other. Even then those games were so far ahead of their time with tactics editors and teams and tactics that could be transfered between Kick Off 2 and Player Manager. I think I must have played Player Manager more than any other game during my adolescence - just a ****ing incredible game and it's sad that a game that is so old and fit on ONE FLOPPY has more complex management and gameplay features than Fifa - and in some instances even PES.

I dunno whatever happened to Dino Dini but I hope he is rich and living the high life - that man's games gave me more enjoyment than most other football games COMBINED.

Trip down memory lane I tell ya.

That is so true Shez, I feel you brother - but I also think Konami, KCET have created the next KICK OFF in Pro Evolution Soccer - just give it a try. And they won't disapear like Anco.

Soccer gaming circa 1988/89 - pure bliss. Who would have thought it would take almost 10 years before a worthy successor in ISSPE would arrive?

I never thought so many people would remember Kick Off 2 let alone think of it as fondly as I do. I remember having my Amiga (which I keep just for KO2 nowadays) and receiving a batch of red disks, one of which said Kick Off 2 (can't remember how long that is but it's got the Italia90 teams on it so it must be around that time). I never thought that I'd still be playing on it occasionally today! Many incarnations of FIFA and other footy games have come and gone (often in a matter of a couple of weeks before I got 'bored' of them)

I liked the fact you had to learn how to control the ball rather than the players. I think that's why I like PES so much, it's footBALL after all. It's all about the BALL not the PLAYER.

When you started playing KO2 it was so impossible, if you wanted to turn or kick the ball it had to be at your feet. The wind and weather had a substantial effect on the game too. As did the pitch, that 'soggy' pitch would make the ball stick to the floor, the 'plastic' one would make it bounce, and bounce, and bounce... Hehe!

The keeper must've been superman the way he could dive across just about all of the penalty box. (This was a bit unrealistic but it made it more real than any other game, until ISS and PES in my opinion)

Like you said, the roar of the crowd, the referees whistle. The way different referees had different characteristics, strict ones would send you off for almost anything but lenient ones would let a broken leg go by unnoticed.

Managing to bang in that 5th goal against the mighty Brazil, then losing 1-0 to the UAE in the next game 'cos you'd lost your touch.

I wonder what has become of Dino Dini?

yup!

well i own played 99.9999% of football games made on all the consoles..... and the only 2 games that i didnt get bored of were ISS PRO EVOLUTION 2 and kick off 2......

sensible world of soccer was unique alongside emlyn hughes soccer and its later management game..super league manager....

the problem with ISS is that it went through all the legal stuff and its differnt versions...japanese and american and u had to wait or pirate to get them.... nowadays life is complicated while in the kick off days life has been simple....

anybody played football glory? its a sensible soccer with a sense of humor...there's also sensible soccer indoors!!!! look for them in the emulators these are unbelievebly deep games....

its funny how everything is changing and changing..but a good game lasts for ever...

god bless dino dini

cheers lads

KICK OFF 2002 ANNOUNCED!

Classic footie game Kick Off is getting ready to make a comeback.
Kick Off was great because it was really easy to play - even after 15 pints and a large curry. It was the sort of game that even your footie-fanatic videogame-hating mate was willing to have a stab at, as long as you closed your curtains, locked the front door, and swore blind that you wouldn't tell anyone about his secret cravings, ever.

Developed by Anco, Kick Off 2002 will retain the simple gameplay, but will add some extra features for those who like a bit more depth to their football titles. This time around you'll get an editor which means that you will be able to dabble with a bit of customisation. Each player of the 204 international teams that will be featured will have eight different skills and physical attribute statistics that you can muck around with and alter according to your own needs and playing style.

On top of this you'll be able to create your own team strip and team name and even create your own stadium! As you take your players onto the pitch, be prepared for chants, pitch invasions, ambulances and streakers - phwoor!

Kick Off 2002 will be released on PSOne, PS2 and PC and will be out on 30th November 2001.
They have a few screens on their site(one of those annoying sites that forces you to register) which I will post as soon as this board stops telling me they are invalid files...

The original Sensible World of Soccer on the Amiga was miles better than any of the Kick Off games, that's a fact!

Well I'm glad that's sorted.

Where PES stands though... I can't say, I haven't played that yet, D'oh! bring on Christmas!
