Question WC Group Tie-Breaker?

I was playing World Cup in WE6 (International Cup) with the authentic WC groups. I was Argentina, beat Nigeria 2-1, drew 2-2 with England, and lost 1-0 to Sweden (Lousy ref giving away silly penalty). Sweden wins the group with 7 points, I end up second, and I go through actually, but I have the exact same results as England. 1 win, 1 draw and 1 loss, 4 goals scored and 4 goals conceded.

So, what's the tie-break? That Argentina starts with the letter "A" instead of England's "E" ? How would a situation like this be decided in the real World Cup?

I'd imagine it would go in to Stats. Maybe the team who had the earnt the most corners, this would indicate that they were the more offensive team

Not 100% sure though

Believe me or not, but i think it's decided through a toss...a bit harsh but they don't have any other solution

Yep if those two teams tied each other and everything else is the same, it goes to a toss.

Good Question. I'm guessing the game (video game) lists them alphabetically when they are tied and then just takes the top two that are listed...that is why you went thru.

In real life, stats other than goals for and points do not count. In real life if two teams are tied they look at head to head competition (which was tied in your case).

Different tournaments can set up their different rules for this case...some use wildcards (all 3 teams qualify) others use other methods. I would personally like to see a penalty match (just like how it is done at the end of a tied game) played between the two teams in question.

For this world cup the rules goes as follows (paraphrasing):

1. number of points
2. goal differential
3. goals for

if still tied then we ask the following between the teams in question:

1. number of points obtained in that match
2. goal difference of the group between the teams concerned
3. goal scored between the teams

If still tied:
1. the organising committee of the 2002 fifa world cup draws lots to determine the team to go thru (in other words flip a coin).

canada made it to the gold cup final two years ago by drawing straws.
they made it to the semis (or quarters?) this year by a coin toss.

I ****ing hate Canada in soccer.

Heh, that was what I thought really. We (The local team I play for) actually won a semi-final in the district championship on a coin toss. There should really be something better though, like for instance a game of WE6 between the two teams managers.
