PARIS, July 25 (Reuters) - The owners of Paris St Germain have put France's most glamorous soccer club up for sale, casting a further shadow over the new season as European football grapples with a growing financial crisis.
French pay-tv group Canal Plus wants to sell the club, whose players include Brazil's Ronaldinho, as part of a break-up imposed by parent company Vivendi Universal, a source close to the debt-laden media group said on Thursday.
The French-American media giant announced the break-up of Canal Plus on Tuesday as part of plans to dig its way out of crushing debts left by rapid over-expansion.
It has not said whether the Paris club it bought in 1991 is on the list of assets up for grabs, but the source said Canal Plus would sell PSG as long as it could find a buyer.
'Paris St Germain was not on the list of assets Vivendi plans to keep and will be sold,' the source said.
Whether it can easily find a buyer is less certain.
After a World Cup in which France failed to defend their title - getting knocked out in the first round - and most of the other top soccer nations flopped, European soccer is in financial turmoil amid doubts over lavish television rights and sky-high players' wages.
'The biggest question will be what PSG's debts are, which is a major factor in telling how much a club is worth,' said Oliver Butler, editor of London-based Soccer Investor.
'PSG is one of the big two French clubs and is therefore judged to be one of the most valuable.
'But another big concern is uncertainty over the next deal on TV rights for the French league and that may also determine at what price it is sold.'
i think there's a chance for getting ronaldinho cheap now!
Salary caps , transfer limits etc should be made essential.
Player contracts should be given more respect too.......
nowadays transfers take place like a freakin Whore-house- u never know whos going where next.
all these things lead to financial problems in the long run.
i totally agree with u. there should b limits in terms of money everywhere.
my club spent 50 millions last season and 30 this season already. and that's for three players. it's kinda gambling. 19 millions have paid off by now but the rest is at stake. 28 millions for veron is right now devalued but he has a chance to come back. however if the club goes trophyless again we will start facing difficulies. but if there's some sanity in player's wages and market prices there won't be a sudden crisis like there is now.

No way. What happens when a team gets relegated and are $5M over the Division 1 salary cap? Should they sell they're entire first team? Crap idea. If clubs are a business, they should be financially responsible for themselves, just like a business, and if you can't pay salaries, you're gone. Also, if you can afford high salaries, you shouldn't be punnished. Man U make a ton of money each year, they shouldn't have to be under the same cap as Charlton, it's not fair.
You didn't understand the problem. It's not PSG which have economical problems, it's Vivendi Universal The owner of PSG, Canal Plus, is owned by Vivendi Universal, so if VU want money quickly (PSG costs 228M€ ) the best solution is to sell PSG.
