Wow guys, this sounds like a great patch to try. I'm currently re-installing FIFA 16 for this. 
Is there any recommendation apoart from "reinstall the game, apply the patch to the clean game and regenerate"?
I mean, would it be better to apply it to the "vanilla" game (the one which gets installed off the DVDs or would it be better to update the game to the latest release and then to apply the patch?
In addition, any slider set recommended for this?

I don't know (as I don't really know the Spanish league) but I don't really think so.
For example, the 2017/18 Italian league is featured (Atalanta still has Gaëlle Thalmann in goal instead of Diede Lemey, for example) but it's something that has been said pretty clearly in the post with the download:

They included a version of the tournament in the FIFA 19 Journey story. I think a DLC is a possibility, but if so it would probably be much more basic than that 2018 World Cup DLC. For example, no stadiums, maybe some teams with generic kits and/or players if they are feeling a bit lazy.

The only thing I did was to edit Roma's lineup with CM 16 (they had Pipitone upfront which is a keeper, and a midfielder in goal) and to then copy again the career compdata files (as CM may have messed them up while saving, I've read something about it here if I recall correctly).
The career started fine and I could train my players and have them play the pre-season tournament properly.
I've then sold a couple of players (Stracchi and Pellegrinelli), bought a couple (Galli from Juventus and Meneghini from AGSM Verona if it can help), didn't do anything else.
I also tried copying the career compdata files over again after it crashed for the first time (I thought I had accidentally damaged them in some way although I didn't directly edit them) and I tried to regenerate to see if it could be the solution but it looks like I can't progress further than that date anyway.
Anything else I should try?

I re-installed FIFA from Origin, re-installed the patch, regenerated and started a new career with Atalanta without using CM to modify Roma's lineup and everything looks fine now.
