FIFA 20 Gameplay Features Deep Dive - PART 1

Hey FIFA fans,

We are here today to share a deeper dive into some of the announced (and a few unannounced) features that we’re bringing into FIFA 20’s gameplay.
Parallel to addressing some of the direct community concerns coming from FIFA 19 - previously mentioned HERE and HERE, many of the new features that are planned for FIFA 20 originated from further feedback gathered from all parts of the FIFA community, including Game Changers, pro players, forums, and a variety of other sources across the community.

These new features build upon previous FIFAs and community feedback, and aim to bring more realism, intelligence and emotion to the game. Keep in mind that we’re here to share the intended behavior for all of the features described, and that we’ll keep on monitoring their performance as the game launches.


1v1’s
One of the main aspects of FIFA 20 gameplay that we wanted to emphasize is within one-on-one situations. In real-life football, some of the most exciting moments derive from these types of situations, and we wanted to shine a spotlight on them.

Due to the re-architecture of our Positioning system, players should find themselves in one-on-one battles, all over the pitch, more often in FIFA 20. Both the dribbler and the defender will have more time and space to read the play and show their skills than ever before - be it a winger trying to break through the defense, or a holding midfielder closing down a deadly striker - these are some of the moments that can define the advantage in a balanced match.



Additionally, our goal for FIFA 20 is to provide gameplay that allows you to read and predict, rather than a game where you only react to your opponent. Strategy and overall understanding of football are key.

To create these moments, the team focused on four main aspects: spacing, movement, game flow and tools.
  • Spacing and movement: The team made a big restructure of the AI positioning system, emphasizing user controlled actions. Players on the pitch should behave more realistically than ever, keeping the space and reacting with the urgency needed for each situation. To improve unnecessary player movements and hectic feeling of the game, players will now try to keep their formation and position, anticipating the opponent’s next move instead of just going towards them. At the same time, players will still make runs and offer support when the opportunity arises.
  • Game Flow: The focus was on building a slower and more composed game off the ball, while keeping it very responsive and agile on the ball. Players will have more time to read situations and plan their next steps putting emphasis on more tactical defending, but at the same time, players will be more responsive and faster than before allowing for explosive runs and breakaways.
  • Tools: Achieving a one-on-one situation was the first step, the next step was to provide both sides with tools to resolve these plays. Some of these new tools are;
    • New Strafe Dribble
    • Controlled Tackling
    • Agile Jockey System
    • New commands:
  • Lofted Ground Pass: X+X / A + A
  • Lofted Ground Through Pass: △+△ / Y + Y
  • Driven Lobbed Through Pass: L1 +R1 + / LB + RB + Y
  • Slow Dribble: L2 + R2 + LS / LT + RT + LS
  • Set Up Touch: R1 + RS Direction (Hold) / RB + RS Direction (Hold)
  • Strafe Dribble: L1 +LS / LB + LS
  • Strafe Dribble (lock face angle): L1 + R1 + LS / LB + RB + LS
  • Goalkeeper Cross Intercept: / Y + / Y (Hold)
Decisive Moments
As mentioned above, to achieve our goal of creating exciting moments, we needed to provide players with the tools for success in these situations.



One of the big improvements was to make the game more responsive than ever before. We created a new system that provides players with the ability to perform last-second button input changes in certain situations during Passing, Shooting and Trapping. Where in previous years those inputs would have been too late to impact your players actions, FIFA 20 allows for increased fidelity with the controller and responsiveness to user reactions.

We also expanded the Active Touch system from FIFA 19 to our ball control system, allowing players to preserve their speed and agility when approaching the ball for a trap. This system also improves the facing direction, initial control and contact with the ball, and allows for more fluid follow-up actions.

Here are the tools players will have at their fingertips:
  • Strafe Dribbling: Strafe is extremely agile and responsive, and by holding L1/LB this mechanic gives players a more precise control over their movements. This provides players with a lot of creative ways to dribble, like suddenly changing direction or luring your opponent in and accelerating past them. The team also created a variation of the mechanic to allow players to perform a Strafe locked to the current facing angle, instead of facing the goal like the default Strafe. This technique will allow for even more control and precision.
    • L1/LB for Strafe Dribble
    • L1+R1/LB+RB for Strafe Dribble (lock face angle)


  • Controlled Tackling: A revamped system that favors manual tackling by making sure that the defender trying to tackle does so in a favorable context to your team on the vast majority of occasions. Defenders will be more successful in recovering possession by tackling the ball towards a teammate to keep the ball in play after a tackle. To reward manual defending, this system also minimizes the frequency of attackers keeping possession of the ball after a successful tackle, by placing more emphasis on the strength of the defender and improving the stumbles caused by tackles.
    • O / B to Stand Tackle or Hold O / B for Hard Tackles
    • This system will be less apparent when using slide tackles, since they trigger as soon as the button is pressed.


Akin to real football, once in a while the ball will bounce back to the attacker, however the frequency of this will be reduced.
  • Agile Jockey: A refresh of the manual Jockey system, making it more agile and responsive when defending. This mechanic will allow user-controlled defenders to better cut off passing lanes or block a shot. The goal of the new jockey system is to encourage players to use manual defending and accurately predict what their opponent will do.
    • L2/LT for Slow Jockey
    • L2/LT + R2/RT for Fast Jockey
  • Composed Finishing: Improved 1-on-1 shooting consistency, creating more clinical finishing close to the goal. We already covered this new system in depth in our previous Gameplay Pitch Notes.

  • Set Up Touch: New mechanic for FIFA 20, players can use this special skill to set up their following shot/pass to be more accurate and precise. While this move is very powerful if performed correctly, it requires space and time to do so, leaving the player vulnerable to opponents during the move. This touch also opens up new creative possibilities, allowing for fake outs and other moves to add to your arsenal.
    • R1/RB + RS (in a direction) to Set Up your next shot/pass

Fidel, good to see you optimistic for Fifa 20 and his Gameplay! I sparely Play Fifa 19. Only sometimes because of your excellent FAES mods and your Tools, and some other good mods from some modders. The fact that is hard to built a modded Fifa like we all know from Fifa 16 is sad. I reinstalled Fifa 16 last time, just for Looking what is possible to mod and I am having fun. Unfortunetly it is a very old game now in expectation for a coming Fifa 20 and I don´t really want playing any longer a old game my wishes are having really better Gameplay in Fifa 20. With you and the other modders effort I guess not much Players would Play a Default Fifa the last years. I tried PES, to be up to date, but I don´t like it for longer Play sessions. :-) Wanna say: One time Fifa Player, Always Fifa Player like the most I guess. But Konami make there games excellent for modding, but for me it´s not enough.
So, yes let us all hope with your words in mind Fifa 20 makes more fun to Play. Keep your Motivation, Bro!

what has to be done is a 20 cm. For the edition to be made easier, creating stadiums is very important but as you do not want, I stay in fifa 16 that has everything

I think that like every year EA does a lot of proclamations but in the end, after a few months, we realize that it's always the same game with the same defects, unfortunately the Frostbyte with Fifa was a flop ..

I don't buy it this year, I hope a strong signal comes to EA to give us back the soccer game we deserve, crossing my fingers for a change of graphics engine with the next console gen!

Fidel has all my respect for being an unwavering supporter of Fifa, but in the air you hear from many historical users that the wind is changing ...

A team I want to play with has finally made it to EFL League 2 so that's one major factor for me in getting 20. But what I don't get is if Juve is exclusive to PES and can't be in FIFA, then why can Man United be in FIFA if they're also going to be fully licensed in PES?

Because EA has exclusive license with Premier league and every year EA give konami to pick 2 teams in PL to be original in PES,other 18 will be unlicensed,2 for PL,3 for bundesliga and 1 or 2 for La liga

I expect EA to script even more than usual. I expect EA to prevent modding the scripting. At present, the scripting cannot be properly modded.
I expect fifa 20 to be even harder to mod than 19.
I have no positive expectations of EA and fifa anymore
Without mods then fifa 19 is totally unplayable for those who like a proper game of football
I play fifa at 4k ultra with graphic mods and the game looks truly incredible. I have the game on ps4 pro and its chalk and cheese.
The frostbite engine produces excellent graphics as long as you have a very powerful PC.
But great graphics with awful gameplay make a bad game. And sadly EA have made fifa into a terrible game
Thankfully we have people dedicated to making fifa a great game via mods. Thank to you guys because without you, fifa is a waste of time

I'm already using the hardest AGPE mod, but the game is still easy on ultimate difficulty.

what you mean in "hardest AGPE mod",
please specify the version of the DB / AI used and if you are using FAES fbmod.
Anyway to increase globally game difficulty just play the game with AGPE DB LV1 Default - Mod Players Height Version.
Adjust sliders ad hoc to increase the difficulty, check documentation.

At this point if I look at the calendar: 22 July 19,
it is almost a year that we play the normal career, frankly I am annoyed now too.
Play the same game mode, after a while makes us bored.

I am happy to present a new Fifa Mod, indeed a new way to play FUT.

Inside FIFA 19 there is another game: the FUT game flow,
completely new and different in its structure and is much more complex than default career flow.
But now we begin to mod and use it, but in the best way, according to FAES AGPE style.
This mod will keep you in the game like never before, of course this is the first mod version.

The World Tour Season its just amazing, you can play (select) after the first promotion.
You will notice that FAES AGPE changes have much more noticeable effects in the gameplay/AI.

You can play FUT AGPE Seasons (suggested) or Squad Battle with all FAES 19 mods and additions.
To play is required to run game in online mode, required to skip protection and synchronize required data.

To play isn't required to pay, as example I didn't spend anything in the store,
I earned (or obtained as a reward) everything by playing on the pitch.

Soon more details, the mod is now in the testing phase.
I'm checking if possible to play online friendly VS a FAES FUT friend,
but is required for both players:
the FAES fbmod + FUT AGPE DB (to get same stats) + the same AGPE AI version.
(or default, supernova AGPE AI Mod or paulv2k GP, etc).

I have thoroughly tested 1.3 mod and reverted back to 1.2 as the former makes the game too easy for me. I found the new mod makes the cpu attack less and concede too much space. I won games too easy and would rather loose a hard fought game than win too easily
the 1.2 mod is superb and i use this with my own ini. In fact, the game is now too difficult when combined with the sliders set to extremely difficult. As stated i would rather have it like this
So I cant recommend 1.3. Not that theres anything inherantly wrong with it. The mod just makes the game too easy for me.

Hello,

If you are referring to latest AGPE AI 3.0 BATTLE (or you've already got something from),
try to remove or disable the line (874): from USE_HOLDING_MF=1 to //USE_HOLDING_MF=1
This restore cpu attack again, but if you like slow gameplay this string (with 1 value)
slows down the CPU's gameplay speed.

I created many AI/DB versions and try to satisfy every taste. Bye

No i don't use that. Just the agpe 3 database, the realism mod and my own ini. Plus the sliders.
Im on ultimate level and finally the game is too hard. Im having to tone down the sliders.
Rather too hard than too easy. It's so difficult to find the right balance isn't it?
I have had some incredible matches recently thanks to these mods etc. Probably the best ive ever had in all my years of playing fifa.
Finally I got sacked as manager but who cares as long as the matches are good and competitive? The cpu is totally relentless at times and i have not seen that since fifa 16. These mods show how good fifa 19 really can be

to edit difficulty adjust the Sliders in game Menu like Fidel mentioned in the post. It have a big Impact of how you experience the game when you adjust the Sliders plus the desired DB / AI. When you Looking for "hardest" Gameplay that´s the way to get it. And when it´s not hard enough Change the Sliders to your liking.
You will find the recommended slider Settings in the screenshots section! So you only Need to Transfer it to your in game Settings.

Hello, I just tried your recommendation, I used the ultra immersive DB, but it doesn't made the game difficult, it just change the overall of the players, and I'm already using a ''weak'' team on career mode.
I also tried the sliders, but they are not too different from ''stock'' game settings, and I understand why, I can mess with these settings like giving the cpu more sprint speed and less shot error, but it would turn to be too artificial.

Hi all,

First of all, thank you Fidel because your mods are wonderful, such a revolution for the Fifa games!!

I have this little query, I have the trial of Fifa 19 and I did install your patch before the update in July and everything worked fine, then the game was updated and although I've tried to install the new version, I couldn't make it work (I reinstalled the game, erased the Datamod folder, etc) and still doesn't work, so I may be thinking that maybe as I have the trial and not the full game, maybe that's why the mod doesn't work for me.

Do you know if it will work if I pay for the origin access premium? Sorry for this random question, but it's the only thing that came to my mind as every user seems to make the mod work with the new update and I am out of ideas!
