How can Real Madrid be a Dream Team with a poor defence?

Hello, everyone.

Over the years we have seen wonderful attack-driven teams being beaten by ultra-defensive and result-driven "winners". Just remember the Catenaccio days. The failure of the 70's Holland. The fall of Brazil in 1982 under a less-talented Italy. Or, not going so far (but with less impact, of course) the defeat of Valencia in hands of Cuper's 11-men behind Inter in the last Champions League.

So, my point is that if the Merengues want to go somewhere, they should build a solid defence. Maybe they should be running behind Chivu, or Thuran. Or other talentend defenders. Hierro is leaving, his time is up. In my opinion, if they fail to do so, maybe the next Champions League final matches will continue to be mediocre and goalless and maybe the LFP could be won by a mediocre team that only wins its matches by 1-0. Or maybe the old Catenaccio days will go back. Maybe the next World Cup will be just like that in Italy in 1990. A really boring thing.

Do you agree?

Before anyone gets me wrong, I am not anti-Madrid or something like that. But I do believe that if they had a good defence, they should be LFP champions in a much more easier way this year. And also they could be in the CL final match. And they would not lose 1-5 to Mallorca in Bernabeu.

A good attack can do marvellous things. I agree with the mentioned 3 CL's in 6 years and many other victories of the Merengues. But I am really concerned about the future. I do not trust in Helguera, Ruben, Pavon and even in Salgado. And I'm upset that they are not after any new defender for the last season. They can be surprised by some Italian team in a counterattack and could fail to score and lose an important game. just like some other wonderful teams lost in the past.

About Germany, they dind't have an effective attack, in my opinion. I am taling about both high quality defence and attack.

victories are hard to come by in the lfp... Valencia play catenaccio most games.. and they barely finished 5th... any team can win any given game on the lfp.. from all 3 major leagues in europe, epl, serie A and bundesliga the lfp was the only one where the champion was not decided until the last game...

In spain we say "The best defense is a nice attack"

Real Madrid could have a nice defense, but lossing power in his attack, personally i prefer just ATTACK ATTACK AND MORE ATTACK

thats fun :)

Real Madrid can have all the best attackers and still lose because of their subpar defense. Sure they may be the the 'top' team but they did not look so great this year. And why was that? Let me give you a hint. It wasnt because they couldnt score goals.

I would have to say that there defense isnt that bad but it is no where near the best. The Fact that the have all these great attacking players makes there defense look even worse when Zidane and Co arent playing well

You don't need an absolutely stellar defense when you can boast the offense that the Morengues can. Heading into a season with Salgado, Helguera, Pavon and Carlos as your four defenders is not necessarily a concern when you expect to have the ball 60% of the time.

Losing Hierro is not something that our defense will suffer from, but rather benefit. Believe it or not, he detiorated quickly these past couple of seasons and was the main reason Nedved ran all over us in the CL semi-finals. Pavon is a solid defender, but just lacks the experience. Playing on the front four will give him that, and he won't be relied on to be the stopper anyhow. I can say I'm pretty confident with Salgado as the best defender.

Don't forget that Makelele will practically be put in a CDM role since Zidane, Beckham and Figo will be all offense. I'd be far more concerned with our club if we didn't have superstars handling the ball. However, knowing that we have one of the best offenses even possible today is very reassuring.

I'll gladly take those four defenders(Salgado, Helguera, Pavon, Carlos) if it means having Makelele, Zidane, Beckham and Figo in the midfield and Raul and Ronaldo up front.

i don't think this is nice football by madrid.they have class due to players.
but once they buy some players the existing ones get driven behind(mcmanaman, guti, etc.)
obviously madrid will keep winning with a one-sided team
why not try to win with a fairly balanced team like inter, liverpool, man utd, arsenal, etc.these all are also superpowers but they don't keep buying and buying and buying like madrid.
hierro's experience was a great asset .he should not have been kicked out.
i think gallas, chivu would be great

Teams with good defense like Valencia haven't achieved anything this year. What is better: make 85 goals and get 42 against (Madrid)
or make 56 goals and have only 35 goals against? The best offense in Spain are champions, the best defense is only fifth in Spain

Why is everyone using the Juventus-Real match to prove Madrid's defence is crap?Ok,they did concede three goals, but they also missed the penalty in a very crucial moment, which could have given them the qualification.Let's all see at the teams who won their leagues this year-Real Madrid,Man.Utd.,FC Porto,Lyon,Bayern, teams not so strong in defence(on the contrary,I should say),but really deadly up front. The only exception,Juventus, plays in a league where catenaccio was born and where ultra-defensive teams can even win the title. So,I can never agree that defence brings titles,at least not in a long-term option.
