more experienced yes.. better no... barthez has always been a sorry excuse for a goalie... he got lucky to play for France on their glory years of the WC and the Euro, behind a great dm and a solid back 4

I don't know it is a tough call, I always liked Barthez he might of not done good last season but I think he is world class goalkeeper. Wasn't he the best in the world at some point?

He is very animated and entertaining too watch also. :)

That hand in the Real Madrid game was just too funny.

Barthez is an excellent keeper, its just that people lose sight of his ability after a season with noticeable shortcomings.

I'd give him another season as number 1, put some faith in him, and then i think we'll see why Howard is on the bench. If not, then Barthez should find another club.

The skill and ability is there, support is what lacks.

barthez' greatest attribute is his reaction and anticipation for the game ....howard probably is better in both of those areas....i dunno who should start but im sure howard will see some time this season in the EPL

I think the real test will be against Premiership opposition...I think he will handle it without any problems though, he should be the first choice after a few games.

Tim Howard is a good goalkeeper BUT I wouldn't give him the #1 until later, like a season or two. For now Barthez should start, if he doesn't improve then Howard will take his place. I think Barthez will improve a lot now that he's got competition for the #1 jersey because if I were Barthez it will be uncomfortable to lose your long worn #1 to a younger lad.

for now, i'll give barthez another chance. at the same time, let howard break in slowly. give him some exposure little by little. i still have some faith in barthez, even though he does act like a clown sometimes during games. but eventually, i think howard will win the job. united's lucky. they have quite a few goal keepers to choose from.

If Tim Howard can put Barthez on the bench permanently, I may be soon tipping him to be the next big thing to Peter Schmeichal, maybe the best in the world someday.. but not better than Schmikes, but up there fo sure.

i think they should at least give Barthez a chance to prove that last year was just a fluke season and see if he can get back on top of things. If not, then i'd put Tim Howard next in line.

i would slowly ease off of barthez and ease into howard. i think howard will excell in the fast paced british style of play. barthez is alittle slow on the uptake...;) oh yea...and howard is american. that should justify the #1 spot :D

I have always been a fan of Barthez, but Howard has been playing great lately, and it would be suicidal to ruin his form by benching him...
