I just want to say first that I was a huge FIFA fan since 95. FIFA 98 and 2003 being my favourites. To me, games are all about realism, that's why i'm a sucker for the real names and licenses etc.
I waited what seemed an eternity for FIFA04, watching every video/screenshot as they were released, having to change my underwear everytime i finished watching them. By the time it was released, I had upgraded my pc to a 2ghz 9800 XT 768RAM JUST for FIFA (well, and Doom/HL2).
When i first played the game (demo/Full release), i loved it. The commentary was exceptional, the gameplay seemed more fluid and the graphics were awesome. But then i played it a bit more...
I finished a career mode and learned a few things about the game: It seems that the game gives you a set path, and if you don't take it....you will get slaughtered. I was sick of seeing the same long shots fly into the bottom corner. I was tired of being dispossessed 95% of the time by the last defender. I was dying from Ally Mccoist's commentary. And don't get me started on the User interface. Obviously these things could be patched, but after a while it seemed like there were 10 different patches and it felt like the game had been torn to shreds.
But at first, I thought there was no alternative as i was going to be damned before i started playing PES! The thought of it made me reach, as well as past experiences in playing previous versions. After i played the demo, i thought 'this isn't bad'. But some of the names are fake and so it just doesn't feel like real football. When I got given the full game, I played it a little bit and found that vs mode was particularly exciting with my bro's. It amazed me how each goal was different from the next. There was no set path to play in. The animations were more fluid then FIFA, and differrent skills could be executed using individual controls. Touches and flicks were esquisite, you had pure control over the players.
The fact that some of the players were still fake and the stadium names and ad boards etc were fake was eating me alive though. So i did a little research into the forums, and found Wolf's Evolution Patch. It fully updates rosters, flags, stadiums, kits, boots, referee kits, stadium names. The game is now as real as fifa with.........better gameplay (it has to be said, although i'd never thought i'd say it). The graphics are without a doubt more stunning than FIFA, pretty much proved in these screenshots http://www.soccergaming.tv/showthread.php?s=&threadid=89909
Champions league music can be added to the entrance scene when players come out the tunnel. You've never such a perfect blend of realism and pleasure in one cut scene.
Sadly, FIFA is now gathering dust and I can't help but think what i saw in the game before.
I know most of you will never convert as I know how i used to think, but just remember to keep an open mind
