Why I changed to FIFA 06 this year from WE9/PES5

I know a lot of people don't like the whole comparison thing and this isn't meant to be a "versus" thread. Many people on here know me as making the patches for the PC versions of the Konami games for the past 3 years and I figured they might be interested as to why the series has pissed me, and a lot of others, off this year.

- Still only part licensed which means the usual editing to make the game realistic. Cue the normal 100's of patches which most people can't apply unless they have a modded console or you have the PC version.
- Depth of number of leagues still poor. No empty slots to even create your own teams.
- Transfers guaranteed to be almost 6 months out of date by release of PES5 and worse by the North American release of WE9:I.
- The first version of another 4 to come this year of the same game, e.g. PES5, WE9:I, WE9 Korea, WE9 Final Evolution (or whatever evolution name they come up with this year!) Each version a little better than the last so your game is out of date within months. Staggered worldwide release (when they really don't change too much) between WE9 to PES5 to WE9:I to ensure gamers worldwide can't get the game other people have until months or half a year later!
- Crowd of 500 while playing Man Utd v Real Madrid? Please!
- Sidesteps everytime you move anywhere but forward, they made it automatic this year and because of the lack of more than 8 directions, this makes player movement a joke.
- WTF is the stuttering when a player takes a throw - looks stupid.
- Constant fouls for minimal contact. Some games are literally stop/start every 30-45 seconds because of constant fouls for the slightest physical contact between the players. The only way to avoid it is slide-tackling!!!! True. You can't legitimately shoulder-barge regardless of how good you get but you can get good enough at slide-tackles to win the ball every time without commiting a foul.
- Almost impossible to dribble once you go to 4 stars or above with any player other than a consideration for FIFA World Player of the Year!
- Now almost impossible to win a header from corners with players 9 inches taller than their markers.
- Goalkeepers saving everything two-handed or they'll miss the ball.
- The slowest player in the game can catch up with Henry over a run of 30 yards even if they start 10 yards behind.
- Defense auto-clears with the same annoying frequency as "scripted" FIFA 2003/04.
- Long shots now as easy as the annoying FIFA 2003.
- Cheating by the CPU as bad as ever and complaints about this are rife among the gaming elite of the WE/PES series.

PROS
- Player models are way better than FIFAs. FIFA need to overall the graphics for the players. WE/PES have far superior faces and uniforms (where they have the license!)
- Ball physics superior to FIFA.
- Better framerate than FIFA for the PC meaning smoother gameplay.

This is the first year where FIFA have started to close the gap and the WE/PES series only has more animations to offer this year and improved faces because every other enahncement (except for the brilliant addition of snow) is a disaster especially the auto-sidestep, scripted auto-clearance additions. The atmosphere in the stadiums is truly bizarre with a handful of spectators to watch the world cup final (sorry, International Cup because they can't even get licenses to use the name of competitions!).

I'm bypassing PES5/WE9:I this year to play FIFA 2006 (especially on the X-Box 360 when it's out). I'm not alone in the complaints list for WE9, you can find a thread with over 600 posts complaining about the game on Evo-Web and confirmations of the other drawbacks all over PESFan or the Soccer Gaming PES/WE section.

I don't know Wolf. The demo isn't that much of an improvement. PES4 is still better in my opinion. I bet you PES5 will probably fix some of the issues with WE9(j). The PC version will almost certainly support more of a crowd. I think you're making a rash decision.

even though pes/we is not doing any drastic changes to try and improve the game, and fifa is a bit I guess you can say (even though I personally don't notice much of a difference from fifa 05 to 06, though I did only play fifa 05 for three days I would say until I couldn't take it anymore and got back we7) pes/we is still years ahead gameplay wise over fifa, you have to admit that wolf... yeah pes/we is not getting licenses and the stadiums aren't packed for big games and all these little things, that I know do make sports games THAT much better with them, but like I said the amazing gameplay of pes/we make up for all those... I am sure any hardcore pes/we fan would still chose pes/we over fifa even if there was not a person in the stadiums, and no team had official kits, I know I would still no question, because it's all about the gameplay especially when it comes to sports game! though I know a lot of people don’t really care much about that just as long as everything is official in the game, that’s why I call fifa a soccer game for the "general soccer fans" because they wont really notice anything wrong with the gameplay when comparing it to pes/we, and then they would chose fifa cause of the official kits for all the teams.

and you also got to look at this is basically the final year of games being made for this generation consoles so most games are already being pushed to it's limits... next gen systems are I am sure going to have all those little things that do make the games MUCH better (full 3d detailed crowds, better crowd noises when something happens... just all those great little things) but still for all sports games they need to concentrate on making the gameplay as realistic as possible first before anything else I think... and I believe next gen all sports titles will be improved gameplay wise A LOT... hopefully...

Welcome back Wolf... :lui: Great post btw.

About smoothness use render_every_ai_frame = 1 command line on cfg_h.ini and you'll notice a great difference...

LOL. @Soda don't you see that Wolf didn't only complain about licence, kits, crowd etc. ? btw. i'm sure it wasn't the main reason he resign but some annoying things in gameplay. It was just "another nail to coffin". He's not the preson who only cares about all the licence, my opinion of course.

i wasn't directing what i said at wolf... i was saying in general, and of course in my opinion

it seems that the lack of licenses for pes has swung it for you? IMo pes4 has the best gameplay but i will be glad to have a complete game with fifa 06. I also hated having to edit the game so much

"- Sidesteps everytime you move anywhere but forward, they made it automatic this year and because of the lack of more than 8 directions, this makes player movement a joke."

That just seems weird if it's like that now, I remember reading something about this saying they did this because of the game going to PSP and Gamecube and of course Xbox which all don't have the four shoulder buttons so they are making that automatic

Everyone that I have seen post about we9 have said it is just brilliant like the previous versions. I am going to check out evo-web and see these complaints

Also all I want is the best soccer game, I don't care if it's fifa or pes/we. So don't think I am some fan boy, and everything I am saying just like everyone else here is there own opinion and we are all just sharing them :ewan:

I did the same thing. Fifa 2006 is even better than PES 4. This game has everything a football game can offer. I love the skill moves, the animations of players, variety of attacking options, the new jostling and shoulder charge, superb player animations, goalkeeper animations and crowd sounds.

I never expected EA to make such a good game before I played the demo :)

For me its not , and by the way ! thanks wolf for all your great work on PES!

But for me PES is still the game (pes4) I have read about WE9 and Im not liking what Ive read ! But I have played many extended games of Fifa06 thanks to the Time Stop mod , but as you yourself have said, the ball physics in PES is better than in Fifa and the ball and what it does is 99% of the game of football, in Fifa06 the ball and its many movements are still not right..

Do I like Fifa's overall presentation YES ! but that is not the game, footBALL as the name suggests is a BALL game and when that ball doesn't act as per real life or as near to it as you can get , then its a waste of time ..

There are many things I like about FIFA but the main one the gameplay (ball physics) it not one of them! It move like a snooker ball across the baize when passed across the grass, it flies like a "speeding bullet" when shot a goal, and flies like a wounded duck in the air ...

Am I a PES fanBOY at 47 years old I think not ! I want to play the best representation of a football game I can , any PES I agree even with its flaws and yes PES has its flaws ( and Im not talking lack of real team names or kits ) but it is still the best by far football sim you can buy!

Again wolf , thanks for all your hard work make it more of an enjoyable game ..

but for me the gameplay of PES4 still out does the gameplay of FIFA and when you strip away the real team names thefaces the kits, its the gameplay that matters..

And so to the steady trickle of screenshots, videos and info for Fifa 06. And the inevitable comparisons with PES past and future. This has a very familiar feel to it doesn't it? I have to say that what I've seen so far from FIFA looks very very good - but it always does. The screenshots look stunning and the gameplay seems to be much improved from what I'm hearing. But will I be lured back from PES? It's odd because despite Fifa 2005 being EA's best crack yet, this was the version that pushed me over to PES last year. If I'm to be won back, EA will need to have addressed the following three things:
1) Rendering. Most incarnations of Fifa have had a juddery quality and 2005 was the worst. Plus - I couldn't get the higher resolution on my Radeon 9600XT. PES, in contrast, runs seamlessly. If the Render A1 is back, then that's good news.
2) Player Editor. After I'd created a dozen players in Fifa 2005, every new player appeared as some mystery black guy. The faces got stuck somehow and thus the whole thing became technically useless. PES, in contrast...
3) Creation Centre. Was great - but it needed to be available right from the start. PES, in contrast, permits everything to be edited, pretty much, and the unofficial editor was up and running within a fortnight.
From what I've seen, the editing facilities for Fifa are back as part of the whole package and look much improved this year and I'm hopeful that team, kit and tournament editing will make a return - if the competition has it then it makes no sense to omit it. As for the rendering - only time will tell. Shame about Mottie though.

really good to see EA try to improve. i'm sure this will give a lots of pressure to KONAMI. hopefully next year, both company will try their best to improve their game especially with the release of next-gen console.

next year market will be a lot more interesting

i must agree with you Wolf... fifa has improved a lot.. i actually converted to PES/WE last year.. and i told mysself that i wun be getting any more of fifa titles next time.. but after trying the demo, i must admit that many aspects of thg game has improved...something i dun like about fifa is you can't assign position for players like in PES/WE, they are stuck to their formation..despite that something i have noticed while playing the demo is that the player's movement is terrific..they are no longer commited to their position..you see central midfielders going to the wings and into the box...i'll definitely get FIFA2006. as for WE9/PES5, i'll consider first

Dribble is fantastic, sometimes just with diagonal buttons you pass the ball to a foot to another... and button combinations make dribbles simply awesome and life like.
