By the way, why was Toni taken off for Inzaghi? To me he was the best offensive threat Italy had in the first half and yet he gets yanked 20 minutes before Del Piero

Toni is awesome. Since the first game...he has been sort of unlucky imo. He's an amazing forward, he kicks like a striker, he heads like a striker, he moves like a striker...love to see him play. Too bad the goals aren't going in.

Toni was taken off for Barzaglia, not Inzaghi... They took off Toni for a defender because Italy was now playing down a man so a more defensive approach is the right idea even though we still had some nice counterattacks. That was the significance of the horrid red card call... Without the red, Italy keeps Toni in and YES he did look dangerous. Italy played better than the Aussies when they had 11v11 and I think they would have won by more than a goal.

Now the problem with the next game is that now we have to dig deep into the bench for another CB because of Nesta's injury will probably keep him doubtful until probably the Semis (If we reach that far.) Materazzi must serve his red card suspension leaving us probably with Barzaglia again filling in the void. Many may not know who he is but he plays for Palermo in the seria A and is a good defender, obviously not my first choice but it's nice to have defensive depth like that with the situation we are in. I think we progress to the semis anyways with the "Italian wall" in the back 4, the strong leadership skills of Cannavaro, Buffon just lights out thus far and I think Toni comes out of his scoreless shell and nets 2 this game.

I think we can win the world cup but we do need Toni/Gilardino to step up and put some balls in the back of the net. FORZA ITALIA!

comon aussies, dont be mad!!! 32 years go by fast, i bet if you train hard you will do better in the 2038 world cup...
A stupid & immature comment that I can only presume came from
a like minded person... :)

Australia is a major international sporting nation.
Sport is everything to us and we're a bigger player in international sport
than what Italy is, and/or ever will be. Italy's a drop in the pond.
We'll take every inch of this success in Football and move forward
and eventually be a regular world class team, just like we are in
every other football type of sport we play, and look how successful
we are in those - we are regular World Cup winners, so don't doubt us.
Over the last 18 months, Football has moved from nothing in Oz
and is now arguebly tied for No.1 spot, along side Rugby Union.
In those 18 months or so, football has grown 5 times more popular than
what it is was originally, so you can expect to see again pretty soon.

I hope age catches up with you, and maturity aswell.
Good luck winning the World Cup, it'll be tough to win.
[Edit] Oh yeah!... Given you think Australia is such a crap team,
then you must be worried about Italy's hopes of winning the
World Cup, given you struggled to score a single goal against Oz,
and even more worrying, that goal was handed to you.

Have a nice evening... :)

Yeah that was my bad, but my point was the same. From what I had seen, Toni had been Italy's best forward, and im shocked that Gilardino and Del Piero lasted longer than him. Plus size like his is a must when playing down a man

Mate, you are kidding yourself.

Rugby Union????

AFL is clearly the national game,
Cricket is the national sport.

But rugby union is no. 1? What the **** are you on about?

Even its name is queer, "rugby union" what the hell is that?

Rugby union, you are kidding me.

Does Shane Warne play rugby union?
Did Teddy Whitten play rugby union?

No. Hence, you are talking through your arse.

australia without hiddink is :sb9: hes the one that made australia what it is now and without him you will go back to what you were before (just like netherlands and south korea before you) and im not talking about international sports or whatever the **** you mentioned (rugby??  who gives a ****), and didn't you start to think why football grew in the last 18 months in australia?? it's because of the world cup!!!! (it happens in every country), when the world cup ends, the interest in football there will probably decrease, (anyways who gives a **** on how football is growing in australia??).
anyways i didn't want italy to win 3-0, or with a big goal difference like that, i wanted it to be at the last minute so it hurt more, and it happened and plus with a penalty that didn't exist, double the satisfaction!!!  see ya in 32 years.

4 things:

1. the Matterazi RED card was 100 correct. it was a 2footed, last man back, lunging tackle which got Bresciano across the shins as he was in on goal.

2. Grosso had a shot on goal / Iaquinta free in the box and was clear of ALL defense and still went down like a little girl. Sepp Blatter needs to give that man an Oscar. flopped like a jellyfish.

3. If Italy are so good why couldnt they score for all those shots-on-goal? Luca Toni couldnt score? oh and why 32 years? the hold would cups every 4...

4. and even if Italy scored thru Toni or Grosso then we wouldnt be this upset. its just the wosrt way to go out. even 8-0 would have been a better way to go.

that said i hope Italy go to penalties and lose....again....and again.... and again.

First off, your number 1 point sucks, watch the tapes over!

This thread has gone too far... All I need to say is Italy 1 - Australia 0 FINAL! Now someone make a thread for the future... "Quarterfinal, Italy vs Ukraine."

Or do you mean that Hiddink will use a Neurolyzer on the Australian team when he leaves?

I agree to a point, but AFL is NOT our national game...Leave Victoria, WA or SA ;)

Cricket is it in this country and that's it.

Football was big during the World Cup, bigger than AFL in the southern states, and bigger than NRL in the north eastern states, which was great.

I think what was meant by bigger than Rugby Union, was that the national team was supported more than the Wallabies, which until then were probably our biggest national team, outside of cricket, which is hard to compare because of length of games etc.

As for Hiddink's legacy not lasting with Australia, because it didnt with Holland, Korea, thats a poor comparison. For a start, Holland were still Semi-Finalists at the 2000 Euros, and the 2004 Euros, and just missed out on the 2002 basically down to really poor management, and team cohesion problems.

As for Korea, they rode their luck in the World Cup that was staged in their own country, as opposed to Australia who had loads of calls AGAINST them in a World Cup a long way away from their country ;) Australia and Korea are alomost opposites. Korea got through the Round of 16 and the Quarters on bad refereeing decisions, whilst Australia missed out on the Quarter Finals because of bad refereeing decisions. The other point in this comparison is, look at the players. Schwarzer is a world class goallie, Neill has been one of the best defenders in the tournament, and Craig Moore has played well and has previously captained a big european side (in Rangers), Chipperfield played an awesome World Cup, and has created interest in himself, if he was a little younger, than he'd be moving to a bigger club for sure. As it is, yeah he wont be around for the next world cup, but look out Asian Nations Cup! Emerton is a similar story to Chipperfield, and is another who has interest in him throughout Europe. Grella, Bresciano, Culina all play in top european sides, and start regularly...They're all young enough to star again in 4 years time...Kewell will only be 31 next world cup, and whilst he may not see much national team action before then, he'll definitely still be a key part of it (if only he could have played a bigger role this time!), Cahill is an awesome player, and will still be so in 4 years...And Viduka is a striker that has been at some top flite clubs around europe for years now, not to mention Aloisi and Kennedy who both went great in the World Cup upfront....Thats the difference right there, Hiddink for Australia put together the players that are good enough to do it. Even just looking at the team sheet, comparing player for player, you would have EXPECTED this Australian team to get past Croatia...Croatias best player is a man that is a star for Rangers, a side Moore used to captain, and the rivals of Celtic, who Viduka broke all sorts of records during his stay there....
