Manchester United and Everton could face a Premier League inquiry and point deduction over Tim Howard's absence in their match last week.

USA goalkeeper Howard was absent in Everton's 4-2 defeat at Goodison, a result which could ultimately help United to the title.

Everton were leading 2-0 at the hour mark before a series of blunders by youngster Iain Turner handed United the points. Howard was barred from playing against United by a clause in his loan deal but that should have been rendered void after the two sides made the transfer permanent in February as such agreements are illegal under Premier League rules.

A Premier League spokesman was quoted by the News of the World as saying league officials would be contacting the clubs "as a matter of urgency" over the Howard deal.

Exclusion clauses are common and indeed standard in loan deals but they are not allowed once a player is bought outright. Howard was left out of the match as this clause had not been removed; however, it is unclear if the purchase of Howard by Everton - which was agreed in February - was immediate or set for a summer completion date as it would have occurred after the transfer deadline shut on January 31st.

If United and Everton are found guilty of misconduct they could face fines or even points deductions, which could give the title to Chelsea and European qualification to Bolton, Reading or Portsmouth, although this would be inconsistent with recent rulings as West Ham were only fined over the Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano transfers.

I will laugh my head off, if we get points deduct and Chelsea get the title, because that will just be tooooooo hilarious to even cry about it.

They will probably fine us if we are guilty, I'm pretty sure I read the deal was permanent from February hopefully I'm wrong.
The Tevez issue isn't settled yet with Wigan threatening to sue the FA for allowing to Tevez to play, Tevez promptly went on to score two goals and got an assist against Bolton, lol to put Wigan in the relegation zone.

Yeah, I mean.... It's not tevez fault that wigan are in the relegation zone (well lol a little it is...) but what i mean is they had plenty of games to play better and they haven't. Now they are clawing at anything to keep themselves up.

Wigan have no one to blame but themselves, they cashed in on their best players from last season Bullard, Chimbonda and Roberts and bought in Emile Heskey, they really deserve to go down for being so stupid.

To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if we do get docked points and nothing happen to Everton.

However if they fail to even dock points on West Ham, i don't see how they can justify docking points on us. But then its the FA.

I bet Ball will be playing next week.
