Speaking about the actual cup as opposed to the Uruguayan liguilla, I'm glad to see Defensor performing well.

They haven't felt the absence of the several important players (Maxi Pereira, Alvaro González, Gonzalo Sorondo, Martín Cáceres, Fernando Fadeuille, Carlos Díaz, etc.), are currently the highest scoring team and have two of the three top scorers in the competition (Carlos María Morales and Diego De Souza with 4 goals each).

Should they eliminate El Nacional, all the potential rivals in Quarter's and Semi's are difficult, but I think they're capable of holding their own against any of them.

lol @ the bambis trying to wind Boca up... shameful behaviour by them... sure, Boca wants to play because they need the result, but still, it doesn't make Sao Paulo look any better...

And before you ask, yes, I'd love it if Ceni scored an own goal now.

Good result for DC but they'll get raped in Mexico like it always happens.
Didn't happen last time. As I recall DC United played fairly well against the goats in Mexico earlier this year.

Oh well another week of the Sudamericana fades.

CD Millonarios(COL) vs. Colo Colo(CHI) 1-1

Pachuca CF(MEX) vs. Club América(MEX) 1-4

Arsenal FC(ARG) vs. Goiás EC(BRA) 1-1 (aggr: 4-3)

São Paulo FC(BRA) vs. Boca Juniors(ARG) 1-0 (aggr: 2-2, São Paulo goes through on away goals)

Vasco da Gama(BRA) vs. Lanús(ARG) 3-0 (aggr: 3-2)

River Plate(ARG) vs. Botafogo(BRA) 4-2 (aggr: 4-3)

What's to be said about the argentine sides. Lanús tried but couldn't even get to score a single goal which would've forced Vasco to score 4, but Vasco was more effective and thus they earn their ticket to the quarter finals. Probably Lanús deserved a better difference on the first leg. Still this season isn't as good as it was expected for Lanús.
Arsenal was very confident after their victory in Brazil and they wanted Goiás to lose their patience so they could do their game, Arsenal scored a goal and was very close to score a second goal, right after some clear chances in a distraction Goias scored but it wasn't enough, overall Arsenal was the best team in both legs. Arsenal who is 11th in the league and pretty much out of the race for the domestic title will try on the international stage.
Boca suffered a lot with that away goal at home, São Paulo played so-so but they managed to make use of one of the very few chances they had in the 2nd leg, Boca could never get around the paulist defense and wasted most of the ball with crosses. I guess they indeedly miss Banega and Palacio, both injured. Probably Boca will now focus on the CWC and maybe try at the domestic league.(6)
After a week to forget River could make a come back from a match that turned out to be more diffcult than it was expected, River went through very tense situations after being down in the score twice, the truth is River played so-so but Botafogo slowly crumbled as the minutes passed and River could manage to score the 4 goals so regardless of all the obstacles River is in the quarter finals. And once again River will try to get a title on the international stage.

So, Arsenal waits for the winner of D.C.-Chivas. Vasco for the winner of América-Pachuca. River for the winner of Defensor-El Nacional. And finally São Paulo for the winner of Colo Colo-Millonarios. The round of 16 will finish next week with these matches.

Tuesday 2/10
CD Guadalajara(MEX) vs. D.C. United(USA) (1-2)

Wednesday 3/10

Thursday 4/10

El Nacional(ECU) vs. Defensor Sporting(ECU) (0-3)

The semi-finals start today!

S1- CD Millonarios(COL) vs. CF América(MEX) - 7/11 & 13/11.
S2- Arsenal FC(ARG) vs. River Plate(ARG) - 8/11 & 14/11.

Some details to have in mind:
- If América becomes a finalist the 1st leg of the final will be played in Mexico regardless of the other finalist.
- América will be the home team in the 2nd leg of their semi-final, but they'll play in Toluca.
- If Millonarios is the finalist then there will be a draw to decide who the home/away order of the matches.
- Arsenal and River play against eachother due the current norms of the CONMEBOL if 2 teams of the same country reach the semi-final they must play against eachother, even if they weren't supposed to.
- If Arsenal is a finalist they would be unable to use their stadium(which only has a capacity of 18.700), it's unknown as of yet where they'd intend to play.

Millonarios and América are playing their first leg match right now, the mexican side is up 2-0.

By the way on another news, there could be something else for the winner of the Sudamericana other than the Recopa(whoever wins the Sudamericana this year will play the Recopa against Boca Juniors, the champion of this year's Libertadores). Eduardo Deluca, the general secretary of CONMEBOL, said, during the draw for Arsenal-River clash, something among the lines of "The winner of the cup should get free time in the first week of August to play an important match in another continent. This may be confirmed during the Club's World Cup... or early in 2008.". A rumour that has been floating around for a while is that the winner of the Sudamericana and the winner of the UEFA Cup would play for an "Intercontinental Cup". Another rumour says that the winner of the Sudamericana and the winner of the UEFA Cup would play for a spot for the Club's World Cup...:gavin: For now it's just rumours until anything gets confirmed.

CF América (instead of Club América) as diablo rojo so correctly posts it has 1 leg and 1/2 in the final, but I just have one very huge problem...that we can't even play in the Azteca because the morrons running the stadium have some sort of religious event going on that date (the 13th). So now we have to play in La Bombonera, Toluca's stadium, which has a much much smaller capacity but none the less our fans will travel the 30/35 minutes and pack that to it's full capacity. That last Libertadores we also had to play there vs. Sporting Cristal and I remember a full stadium, but still nothing replaces the Azteca.

Amazing how Millo's fans packed their stadium, really impressed.

Vamos América!!!

coinsidence? nah.

But what is unfortunate is what the Chilean ref did to Millos by red carding a player in the 10th minute when at most it was a yellow card, oh well.

Arsenal scares me more that facing mighty River Plate, and I wouldn't like two of my favorite clubs facing each other in such a crucial game (:/), that would kill the enthusiasm, regardless I would want America to win.

América - TAN GRANDE ES MI PASION, COMO ETERNA TU EXISTENCIA. ;)

I'm not sure about the Argies, but Brazilian teams really don't give a damn about this cup. Sao Paulo's captain, Rogerio Ceni, stated that beating Boca was a matter of honor, but that he considered Sudamericana to be more of a nuisance.

So the semi-final finished, Arsenal won 4-2 on penalties against River Plate after they tied 0-0 in both legs, and so the final clash...

Final
CF América(MEX) vs. Arsenal FC(ARG) - 28/11 & 5/12, to be confirmed.

-Arsenal kicked River off the Sudamericana for the second time, the first time was in 2004 in the round of 16.
-It is yet to be confirmed in which stadium will the second leg be played, the possible candidates are Vélez's(highly unlikely), Lanús(less probable) and Racing's(fat chance).

Yes, as i said early in the thread the brazilians do what is supposed to be done send the 2nd tier teams, even though Argentina doesn't do this look at the argentine finalist, which wa 5th in the 06/07 table and currently 15th in the league, this already is a big success seeing as it is the 2nd time in their short history that they take part in a cup. But i think how important is this cup may depend also on the club if it is in need to win anything and has no other thing to play for. For example River who was 4th last season, maybe you could question if that's 2nd or 1st tier but let's assume it's 1st tier, were craving for a title, they didn't care about the name either the league or the Sudamericana was going to do it, as they lost the race for the domestic championship, the Sudamericana was very important for them, probably for the wrong reasons but it still was, of course no one dares to argue that the Libertadores is the most important tournament for South America. After all this is supposed to be to southamerican version, yet majorly flawed, of the UEFA Cup, however like i said more than once before maybe a 2nd cup for South America isn't needed at all, rather put the effort to fix some details in the Libertadores.

Also i had a good laugh when São Paulo got eliminated when all the idiotic media were naming them as the big candidates only because they defeated Boca.:hump:

By the way even though it was not confirmed there are unofficial versions of what is "the thing" that will be played in August, apparently it's a cup between the winner of the Sudamericana(this time it'll be the finalist on the least, because even if América wins the cup they'll play the Recopa but not this "Intercontinental Cup" since they aren't from CONMEBOL, so Arsenal will be the one to play this) and the winner of the AFC Champions League, and not the UEFA Cup winner like it was believed before, regardless of the teams it seems it'll take place in Japan, i don't know if later on different countries will be able to bid to host this thing like the Club's World Cup starting on 2009. However the whole thing is yet to have official confirmation.
