Easy Rule Change

Why is it still legal to make substitutions in the 89th minute when the purpose is clearly to waste time? This seems to me like an extremely easy thing to fix; just make a rule that you can't make substitutions after 80 or 85 minutes. I'm sick of these shenanigans where the game stops, a player walks slowly off of the pitch while the crowd whistles and opposing players try to rush him off. I'm sure I'm not the first to think this, but why is it never discussed?

I completely agree, but I wonder how the player that's coming on in the 89th minute feels...

I bet he wants to play a large role in the game and instead he gets to play just a few minutes or even seconds...thanks coach!

But yeah, I don't think they'll make a rule for it because it's not that big a deal...I mean, the ref could always add an extra 30 secs or so to make up for the time lost...

What if your player gets injuried in 85th minute? what if you are winning 2-0, then conceed a goal in 85th minute and need to suddenly change tactics? Same situation if you are give up an equaliser or even a winner? A team sees that its almost 85th minute and you want to make a substitution before the allowed time runs out, so they play keep away, which forces your team to either let them be and not make a sub, or chase the ball like crazy losing valuable last minute energy to try to get the ball to go out, maybe even exposing yourself at the back while chasing the ball.

I don't see a point in creating such a rule. There are far more effective ways in wasting time than making a late subsitution.

What he said. You obviously can't make a rule. The ref has always been free to throw around yellow cards for time wasting.

And one more thing, it's not wasting time when the official clock on the ref's watch is stopped.

whenever subs are made refs add minimum x amount of time to injury time so that no matter they still get the time back

30 seconds per trade no matter when in the halftime. If a player takes more than 30 seconds to get off and the other one to get on the pitch it's a yellow card. So I second what Help? said.

Have to say it does annoy me the late substitutions but it is up to the refs to add the time onto stoppage time - also I know it is rare but I have seen refs books players for taking to long to get off the pitch although for the life of me cannot think what game or league it was in

Also you can't really have a cut off as what if there is ten minutes of injury time or more because of a long stoppage during the game?

If there's a pause exceeding few minutes(think it's between 5 and 10), gameclock gets halted and the game continues after the situation is resolved or is canceled.

What pisses me off is the amount of injury time allowed in extra time. I've seen up to 5 minutes at the end of the 30mins. How the hell do they justify that amount of time? the extra time is a 1/3 the size of a whole match, so how can it have equal added time :S

As has been said, the Referee is supposed to stop his watch, so it shouldn't make any difference to the time that is played.

I know! One more reason why there should be a rule.

It's just the same as when teams have already used their three subs. They just have to deal with it.

It's usually a tactical change as well as it's usually a defender coming on.
I disagree. If anything, they bring in somebody who never gets playing time, regardless of position.

Who cares about getting a yellow card when they're leaving the pitch already? It's one-fifth of a suspension.

And the referee never adds as much time as it takes, that's why these substitutions are made. It's just like when players fake injuries; of course time is added on, but never as much.

cauase ltso fo teams *cough* italian teams *cough* *cough* gattuso
*cough* FAKE injuries to waste time.

they definetly need too add that rule in. its a cheap tactic to waste time. and alot of the time teams make subs during the injury time to waste it and alot of the time refs dont add it back on.

this is robbing the losing team. of the chance to tie the game up by basically cheating. if they team that is winning is truely good they wont need to waste the time.
