Gilardino handed two-game ban

Fiorentina striker Alberto Gilardino has been handed a two-game ban by the Italian football authorities.

Gilardino's goal in Sunday's 3-1 win over Palermo infuriated the home side with replays showing that he used his arm to open the scoring in the 19th minute.

The league's sporting judge said in a statement that television evidence showed the Italy international had deliberately handled when he slid in to score.

The two-game ban has been issued as the league felt former AC Milan player Gilardino was guilty of 'serious unsporting conduct'.

The Sicilian side's president Maurizio Zamparini had already called for the Fiorentina forward to be issued with a five-game ban, with Palermo made even more livid by the fact that Gilardino ran away in celebration.

Zamparini fumed: "He even celebrated, incredible."

Serie A's top scorer will now miss Wednesday's home match with Inter Milan and next Sunday's encounter at Siena.

Don't know what to think of this really. I'm sure dozens of other players would have done the same, but I'm glad this sort of action was taken. Take a few pointers from De Rossi you twat! (except on how to take penalties, of course)

good to see them take action against this sort of stuff... tho how come the likes of messi and maradona can get away with it?

I think the referee who allowed that goal should share the blame. And I don't think handball is any worse than scoring from and offside, for example.

Great to see at least one instance where action has been taken and video replays have been used.

And deliberately scoring a handball goal and scoring an offside goal are two completely different things, when you play football and get called offside and you are actually offside you have thoughts that you are onside, more often than not you do not know that you are onside, let alone knowing you are onside and getting away with it, the ones that are gotten away with are usually very close circumstances and the player themself would probably not know whether they are onside and if they bother themself thinking about that they waste valuable time that could potentially cost them a goal or a goal-scoring chance.

Well, there are tons of examples when a player is like 2 metres past the defenders yet he still manages to score and gets away with it.

totally agree. The referee is the only one to blame here.
Huh? If it's a deliberate handball of course there's a big difference.

Speaking of Messi's goal, it's good to see a federation act. Because Messi scored that goal deliberately yet was allowed to play the final (and decisive) game of the season in which he scored 2 goals. F*cking ridiculous, how is that fair exactly?

Players who spend their time trying to get away with things have their share of the blame and have to be held accountable for. Crazy to claim the contrary.

Great move by the Italian federation, it is a step towards the right direction.

As for the messi handball, yes he got away with it, and played in the last decicive game.. But they lost the title in the last minute of the game... So I would just say to that one moment hahahahaha

yeah guys, but why they don't take these kinds of decision when referees make horrible mistakes.
They do. Red cards can get overturned for example. You can't take a refs authority away though. Players have too much influence as it is. You can't put them on an exactly equal stand and rightly so.

Anyway, I simply cannot understand how someone could see this as a bad thing. I can only guess that if Barca lose the CL final 1-0 this year with a player punching the ball into the net you'd be laughing it off too.

But there needs to be a good balance for these decisions.
Red cards overturned and bans given out as punishment is one thing, how bout goals that cross the goal line/or don't obviously but the refs didn't see them or given them even if its an error of judgment.

And incorrect decisions goal/or no goal because of the linesman's flag.

The list goes on and on. Its easy to punish the players but how bout the referees?
Only when its highly publicized or when its a high profile error is when the football associations take action.
