PS: Linking to that and again from Sicko, there was a comment from American ex-pats living in France which Moore interviewed that I found interesting. Apparently it went along the lines of "In Europe, the governments are afraid of the people, whereas in America, the people are afraid of the government." Is this true to any/some extent?

I would say :
In every European countries, Governments are affraid of the people, but in Europe people are affraid by the European federal power.
I could imagine that it could be explained both for Europe and America by the system of election.
Direct = more power to the people
Undirect= more power to the politicians

So essentially they've upgraded their fear of Government from the national to the Euro-federal level?

Well in the case of Europe, it is the politicians who appoint the Commission (indirect); the EP, which is elected by Europeans citizens (direct), as well as the European Council (national heads of state/govt).

Some would argue that since the people vote for the EP and national politicians who serve as part of the European Council/Council of Ministers that there isnt really a democratic deficit. There are two forms of civic representation in the EU.

Yes, you can distinguished 2 main reasons :
- 1st is the communication from the conservators and nationalist. The american people have their "Joe the plomber", and during the campaign for the European constitution agreement we had our "Polish plomber"....
- 2nd is the power of the Commission (nominated people by national gov.) wich is the real executive part of the Europen federal system.

In France this fear is propapbly overated, because as a "Big country" we kept a minimum power on the different European level of decisions, but I could imagine that this fear is normal in "littles countries".

The same in America, I could imagine that some little states could be upset to have no influences on the choice of their president, and then no democratic power on their federal gov.

I thought in France you had Marcel, the guy with bread under his armpits. That's what Sarkozy said when he called Palin. (H)

Nah, Marcel is the guy they have in Quebec. :D

In any case, le plombier polonais and Joe the Plumber were used by political groups for very different reasons. The Polish plumber was a play on immigration from Eastern Europe to Western Europe.

Starting XI
excitement, fear, anticipation, anxiety and pretty much any other word that can describe trepidation is the overall feeling in the nation as we prepare for tomorrow...it's going to be close I predict, and quite honestly I can't even say Which way it's gonna go...all the logical indicators say Obama wins but who knows Americans have a weird way about ourselves as a whole....I pray our better judgement takes over tomorrow

YELLOW CARD: Untrustworthy
Don't expect any surprises, as history has thought us, when the president in office causes people to be unhappy, the opposing party will win in the next election. One of the main reasons Bush got a second term was because Kerry wasn't such a motivated speaker as Obama is.

Superstar
The Obama rally was amazing! I was literally inches away from him and missed shaking his hand by a fraction of a second :(

He spoke for a little bit about his grandmother and even teared up a bit.

He urged everyone to go vote and convince others to vote tomorrow and he encouraged and energized the crowd with his typical campaign style speech that has helped lead him this far.

I'll post some pics up later.

PS: there were easily 15,000 - 20,000 people there

Incredible sketch!!!!

Robbie is right, our plomber from poland was an unfair symbol to fear people on the immigration....

This is D-DAY....

I hope to watch the historical 4.10.08 on TV this night, and not a second 2000 election....:browsmiley:
