Right before the World Cup 98 draw in Marseilles, there was a match of legends before (or all-stars). It ended in a 6-4 result, I'm trying to find an article or video that shows proof that it took place because my friend doesn't believe me when I say one took place. I remember watching it on espn2 back in 1998 right before the draw took place. Someone help me out in this one. Thanks.

There are some websites which sell classic matches, but this one was a special match so it would be very hard to find it.

When he was at PSV and Barca, Ronaldo might have been the greatest player I've ever seen. Real shame what those injuries did to him, because by 2002 he was only a fraction of his former self.

by 2004/5, I think you mean ... coz he came back from his horrific injury, that kept him out of the entire 2000/01 season, to win the Golden Boot at the 2002 World Cup (including 2 in the final), en route to winning the World Cup for Brazil ... and his performance and his hat-trick for Real Madrid at Old Trafford in the 2003 Champions League quarterfinal was sublime ...

but no doubt, injuries have deprived him and us of seeing the heights he could have reached if his rise was not pegged back at inopportune moments ...

EDIT: even though it was only a friendly, the Ronaldo show was impressive: he either scored or assisted in all the Rest of World's goals, and looked slick doing all that while wearing the captain's armband of "his" side ... crazy to think that he was only 20 years old at the time of the match ... undoubtedly the best in my book ... but I still think he would have reached even greater heights were it not for the big injuries ...

No, I meant by 2002. Despite his Golden Boot performance in South Korea/Japan he was no where near the player he was before the injuries.

Ronaldo is perhaps one of the best players ever, right behind Pele, Maradona and Cruyff.

fair enough then ... quite a compliment to pay (which I think was your point) to say that the 2002 World Player of the Year, World Cup winner, and World Cup Golden Boot winner, was not close to what he was before his injury ...

I see what you are saying though, and, thinking about it, I have to agree ... he was still the best striker in the world upon his return from injury in 2002, leading Brazil to World Cup glory, and putting in those ridiculous performances for Real Madrid in the Champions league in the following season ... but from 1996-1999, there was no doubt he was the best player on the planet, and there was no doubt he was on the way to being the greatest player ever ...

you mean the hat trick against United? 2002-2003 was his best UCL performance.

Just another one of those players whose careers were blighted by injury, Ronaldo in 1998 was simply unplayable (before the Final, anyway) he never really got the consistency back after that - although he was still capable of brilliance (the United match in particular, he got a standing ovation at Old Trafford, and rightly so)

It happens so many times, and especially to very quick players - I suspect somewhere down the line Cristiano Ronaldo will suffer an injury along those lines.

I never saw Ronaldo live, but even on TV he was amazing.
