Can the United States win the World Cup?

There was an interesting article about football in America in this week's Time.
It said that football was the only sport that isn't dominated by Americans and that Americans can't live with that fact. Although there were quite a few enthusiastic Americans claiming that Americans can't be seen as "second rate" in "soccer" anymore.

Well the article is wrong, the problem is that Americans CAN live with the fact we are not the best at football. Sure there are growing numbers of us who care but as long as the Jim Romes and fat hot dog eating couch potatoes keep deeming soccer as a girl sport it will have trouble with growth. Believe me that if the USA wanted to be the best at football then we would and I don't mean that to sound cocky but its true.

Help?

I'm pretty sure that most Americans that care about soccer are immigrants/second generation immigrants anyway and they realize that USA is not Brazil.

But on the topic, I don't think USA will win, but they certainly can given a lot of luck. They are my dark horse for the tournament.

Always had a soft spot for the US team. Always like to see them do well.

... apart from in their first game this time around of course.

Maybe but not in the near future. But you know which country has the most registered youth football players in the world? The US. I'm pretty sure that the phrase "soccer mom" came from that country.

And Canada probably has the second most registered youth football players.

Yeah, we'll just flip that switch when we feel like it.

Single games, single mistakes can decide the World Cup's outcome. Heck, even the Bafana Bafana can win it depending on how the other nations perform. South Africa are in great form right now. My favorites of winning the World Cup however are England, Germany, Holland and Brazil. I don't believe in Spain because their coach haven't got the proper tactics for big games.(just think about the semi-finals in the Confederations Cup when Spain lost to the US with 2-0) I don't think that Argentina, France, Italy or Portugal will make it. Why? One answer to all of them: their coaches suck.

Well they are 300.000.000. If they fall in love with "soccer"... why not?

Argentina and Spain will success.

Well.. Greece did win the Euro's with their ultra-defensive approach but I doubt the US will play like that.

Just dont remind me of that sh**!:clapwap:

Must've been tough for you Portugese, I'd rather want Portugal to win that instead of the Greek. One of those "football miracles" that no one expects, I guess. Will such a similar thing occur in this World Cup?

Sorry, but I really doubt it. And I do not say that just because I am Brazilian. I believe football is, above all, about passion and talent. You don't learn how to play it because you want to be the best. You just born to be a football player. I guess Pelé, Maradona, Ronaldo or Zidane didn't start playing football because they wanted to be great, they just did it.

US can be great in everything they want to be, but when football is the subject, I just can see some interest and motivation, not love.

Thats what I was going to post. Who would've guessed Greece would win it? USA did very well in the confeds as well. The chances are extremely slim for them but you never know!
