Recently been getting into them, have a few songs, can anyone recommend some of their work? My favorite songs are Shine on You Crazy Diamond (******* 17 minutesd, I'm proud of myself), and Wish You Were Here, which apparently came at completely different times by different members of the band, so I don't know where to start.

Err, Shine On You Crazy Diamond(there's two parts) and Wish You Were Here are on the same album.

Anyway the best Floyd is from early seventies IMO. Dark Side of the Moon being the high point.

Two parts? Is the 17-minute song just one part, or is it the two parts put together? Because it sounds like two since at like 12 minutes they stop playing and restart after a few seconds, but it's the same song.

Anyway, I thought I had read that Shine on... was written as a tribute to one of the deceased band members. Although now I think about it, the two that died did so recently, so that wouldn't make sense.

Well frankly, I said it wrong, there's nine parts for Crazy Diamond, from which parts one to five are combined into one song of about 13 minutes and parts six to nine into another one of about 12 minutes. If you listen carefully you'll be able to seperate all nine parts when you hear the song. All pretty complicated I know.

Oh and to make it more complicated the song is indeed dedicated to a deceased member; Syd Barrett, who was their frontman and guitarist at the beginning of the band (late sixties) but left the band in 1970 for going crazy really (being a drug addict? I don't know). He was replaced by David Gilmour who became co-frontman together with bassist Roger Waters. So much for a little Floyd history. For more you can visit Wikipedia. As you can see life in a band isn't simple when you're in one of the biggest rock bands ever.

I thought that David Gilmour and Syd Barrett where both in the band at the same time for a few weeks? I think that Gilmour was brought in to cover for Barrett who was becoming unreliable during gigs due to his addictions. Then one day they decided to not pick Syd up before a gig.

There is also a story (i forget the exact details) where Syd turned up at the studio when the band was recording Wish You Where Here.

If you like the band, I would recommend getting the actual albums rather than a compliation as alot of the bands albums are concept albums. Dark Side Of The Moon is probably the best album to start with. Wish You Where Here is my personal favorite. The Wall is also very well known, it is good but very overated.

I think 'Wish You Were Here' is their best album, but of course they have more good ones. I suggest 'The Dark Side Of The Moon' and 'The Wall', because they're more accesible and then give 'Animals' and 'Meddle' a chance too.

Is sport good for health?

Generally many people will agree that the practice of sport(Quebec Nordiques)
is a good thing for health. But is really the case ? A moderate practice of sport(San Diego Chargers)
is certainly a very good thing , but an intensive or a professional practice is a entire different matter. For example(Calgary Flames #12 Jarome Lginla Red 30th Anniversar)if we consider the life esperancy, we can see for example (but they are others)
that professional americans players(2010 Olympic Team Canada #35 Sidney Crosby Red Newest)have a life experancy of 56 years wich is not great indeed. The case of the Sumo in Japon is worse, it's rare that a sumo live more than 50 years (but they have a semi-god status and all the women they want
(Montreal Canadiens #31 Carey Price Blue ) ... Hey beautifull loser dont you want to be a sumo :D ). Concerning Soccer (european football) many of them have their knees destroyed after years of practice. The doping also, is a very bad factor, which can explain (Pittsburgh Penguins #87 Sidney Crosby Black ) but not totally this diminution of life esperancy. The debate is open : let's enter the AI' s champions in the arena !

I suppose it makes sense that Floyd lovers are the demographic for health advice.
