To be able to play with a 4-3-3 you must have fast attaquers.
For me i use the 4-2-3-1 with Strong ST and CAM. (Randon and J.Batista) and two fast LAM and RAM (Santi Cazorla
and Bonnanotte). With Malaga's squad i think that it's the best strategy.
We can't talk about the best strategy but about the adapted strategy to every squad and team.

Dude it's Barcelona, the best team in the game. What's so hard playing possession football with them?! They have the best players around the globe -.-
Try to play like Barca with Stoke or the likes and then brag.

It's all about posession and taking cpu out of it's comfort zone, u can't do tricks while defenders are looking at u, just do the tricks when the cpu players are working it's a** off, start taking 2/3 basic tricks/moves, control your pace, put your team in motion, grab empty spaces, build a passing gameplay and you'll see the light mate!

Its awfull, Im playing in Pro level, And it's dire, really frustrating to try and break teams down, I've tryed playing in the Airtricity league with my home town team Derry City, And it's awfull, Smaller clubs and League's will put you to sleep on FIFA 12, It was fine and enjoyable to play on Fifa 11, Just hope someone can make a FIFA 12 fixed gameplay patch.......

use the 4-5-1....okay i might be the only person who uses it....btw i play on proffesional, about to switch (got easy) =)
I was having the same issues, but I guess I got used to it after a while. What I can recommend is trying out the 4-2-3-1 formation (depending on the composition of the squad). I try to clamp down the passing routes when the cpu is attack and try push them towards the sidelines and/or backwards by constantly switching player. When in possession, you need to do one of two things: play direct (ie quickly moving the ball with passing up the pitch not allowing defenders time to reset) or slow it down and play possession ball (and move the defence around). One trick I take advantage of occasionally is when i have a strong and pacy striker at the 1, i'll play a pass from the ram/lam to the striker when the cb is right behind him, then turn diagonally and use pace and strength to hold off defender and create a shooting chance. But stick with it, you'll get it, even I have my bad games where i draw with severely weaker opposition.

It's what i do.
Another usefull tips with this 4-3-2-1:
-Against strong team try containing in your 1/3 and go with fast break, with fast Am it strikes!
-With possession try to hold passing the ball on one side than change rapidelly to the other. exp : try to make a lot of passes between your CAM, LAM and ST and you will see that your RAM and RB will have a lot of space so use the lob pass.
PS : i played on pro and changed to WC and seems that with WC the gameplay is more balanced and realistic.

4-2-3-1 is about perfect. Make sure you select possession also.

This I dont know how but does mess up Comp. AI and I get free space for killer through balls when I near the enemy camp. Although I dont score every time coz the keepers in FIFA 12 are grandads of Yashin and Banks.
Oh Yeah After Scoring I go 5-2-1-2 for 1 min to 30 secs. So as to make sure the charged up AI Does not get a easy one in ASAP.
