Question of the Week: The Confederations Cup

The question in full:

"Confederations' Cup:
Should it be scrapped altogether? Or should there be an "All-Stars" tournament with 6 teams comprised of players from each confederation?"

I think Spain's idea of a World Cup winners' cup would be nice as a one-time thing. But I like the all-star idea. Who would your teams be and who would you choose as the All-star team mananger for Europe?

So Spain vs. Japan vs. Africa vs. Australia vs. Brasil/Argentina ?

Why the **** would there be such a thing? All-star South America? That might actually cause war on that continent.

I don't like neither idea, would be fun FIFA patch, but won't work in reality.

Altough, I liked All Star games before World Cup draws.

With the way football is coming so commercial wouldn't be too surprised if there's a Sponsors cup with Nike and Adidas teams..

I'm actually fine with the confederations cup as is. It's basically a half assed prelude to the World Cup and most teams take it seriously. Good enough for a taste of what's to come the year after.

I agree, it's just a trial run of the World Cup. I like seeing all the confederation winners play. Should be great with Zambia next year.

Confed Cup is a good additional tournament, IMO. I care about how the host nation prepare their team toward the finals of WC within 1 year.

I don't usually watch Confederations Cup matches, simply because it looks more like a friendly tournament.

But the idea of an All-Star tournament sounds fun, although impossible, at least atm.

Well what I meant by the "All-Stars" idea was to have a selection of players from each confederation, so you would have teams representing AFC, OFC, CONCACAF, CONMEBOL, UEFA, CAF. Or you could even combine the first four into two teams of the Asia-Pacific and the Americas.

Decided I'll try and create All-star formations for each continent, like with the Yugoslavia question, since I like the idea of All-Star matches.

Africa:

Benin: Sessegnon
Nigeria: Enyeama, Taiwo, Yussuf, Yobo, Mikel, Obi, Obasi, Odweiminge, Moses, Yakubu
Algeria: Bougherra, Belhadj, Feghouli
Togo: Adebayor
Kenya: Mariga, Wanyeama
Cameroon: Kameni, N'Koulou, Bedimo, Song, M'Bia, Matip, Assou-Ekotto, Bassong, Tchoyi, Makoun, Eto'o
Egypt: Hassan, Zidan, Zaki
Ghana: Mensah, Annan, Asamoah, Gyan, Essien, Inkoom, Frimpong, Muntari, Ayew
Ivory Coast: Toure, Eboue, Zokora, Tiote, Toure, Gervinho, Kalou, Drogba, Bony, Doumbia
Mali: Keita
Morocco: Aissadi, Chamakh, Benatia, Belhanda, Labyad, Taarbat
Senegal: Diame, Papiss Cisse, Demba Ba

Basically made that selection based on whether I was familiar with them, which is why I didn't pick anyone from Zambia's winning squad, no name was familiar to me.

Anyway, making a quick selection of a best eleven I get this:

But there are a lot of ways to change it around. I'd also say that there's a lot of talent in some areas like ST and MC and not so much in other areas, like the wide positions. A Mikel, Song, Yaya midfield would be unbelievably strong but also well-balanced and with a lot of creative ability. I personally think Eto'o and Drogba are getting past it and Adebayor is reaching his prime, so went with that but still. Overall it's a strong line-up that could even be in the draft, but probably amongst the worst.

I'll do South America and Europe later, not North America since that's just USA and Mexico best 11 and I know even less about Asia.

I love the Confederations Cup. There isn't enough meaningful international football. Outside of the World Cup, there is nothing that EVERY team is essentially eligible for. Confederations Cup brings us that. Euro is great, Copa America is great, African Cup of Nations is great etc, but Confederations Cup has its own place, as it's different, and it provides international football in a tournament environment.

Not sure any Australians would even make the Asian side now. Don't really have any shining lights.

Schwarzer, Kewell and Cahill are all past their best I'm afraid. Lucas Neill and maybe even Bresciano probably would have made the side a few years ago too, but not now.
