Last movie you watched

Timbuktu - nominated for best foreign language film in last years' oscars, first ever nominee from Mauritania. I wanted to see it for this reason, I have been to Mauritania and it's quite an obscure (and not very safe) country to visit, so there are not many cultural exports which allow one to reminisce. It's an excellent film, what you think are going to be key storylines don't really develop too far, instead it's a whole tapestry and all the more realistic for not over-emphasizing specific characters/events - it's what happens when radical Islamists move in to a traditional Islamic community. It begins fairly light, the Islamists and black flags do stir an immediate feeling of terror due to recent news stories, but they seem rather incompetent - some of them cant really drive, they cant speak effectively, some of them get shouted down by locals on whom they are trying to impose their rules. But, of course, malignant power is progressive, and the people are gradually seen to be wrong to take the bumbling initial impression of their oppressors so lightly - they still have the numbers, the weapons and the wickedness to do some truly terrible things. It's a stunningly beautiful film, and I recognized many of the sets from towns I visited in Eastern Mauritania (it's set in Mali, but for obvious reasons none of it is filmed there). You hear a lot of stories about the unbelievable naivety and idiocy of terrorists and fanatics - from Syrian border guards thinking that 'the facebook' is a physical object to a guy attempting to blow up Detroit with a bomb in his underwear (his original target was San Fran, but the airline ticket to Detroit was cheaper) - and this film really helps you understand how such stupidity does not make them any less dangerous or any less capable of committing acts of evil. I was really impressed.

I also saw The Connection which is a new French film which basically presents the story of The French Connection, but from the Marseilles end. It's a very entertaining watch, slick with 70s Marseille recreated beautifully, but there are a lot of cliches and many of the characters are cumbersome, the central character of the magistrate in particular is a good character in his legal 'flexibility', but very unbelievable in his level of personal involvement, which is necessary for dramatic effect. It's a long film, and some of it could be cut, yet it skips way too swiftly over certain key events and aspects of police/legal procedure, what should be some of the more interesting aspects of this Heat-style cat and mouse story. Very easy on the eye, however.

Juraasic World. Proper popcorn movie; switch your brain off and enjoy the ride. Bloody loved it.

There's many more, but I finally watched Whiplash (2014) and I thought it was great. Sir_Didier_Drogba you were wrong again that I wouldn't like it. I thought it was brilliant, but as I recall Mandieta6 saying that half of the movie was the guy playing instruments, which was true. That was the bad bit I guess. But there is a lot more to that movie than that.

Also Chappie (2015) was okay. No need to mention any others that I've seen recently.

EDIT: Oh and I completely forgot about this one. Hyena , it was a bit like the Danish movie Pusher but with the opposing roles as the "bad guy" being the copper. The ending was so-so... But I kind of enjoyed it.

Watched Ex Machina a few days ago, pretty good movie but the end wasn't what I expected though

Jurassic World - I enjoyed it very much, good movie.

You'll enjoy it if you like American roadtrip movies and a bit of gambling (poker mostly). Especially if you liked Scarecrow and Easy Rider. It's a bit like a modern version of the latter in my opinion. Great dialogue as well.

Both of the actors, especially and surprisingly Ryan Raynolds was fanastic in this, his best role ever that's for sure. And the other guy too.

Rayonold's character reminded me myself a bit, in terms of attitude and how he went along with things. Money's not the most important thing in the World!

Grandiose I would say. Even though I'd not like to admit it, at times brought a tear in my eye and other times would make me laugh. Some stuff was involved while watching this, but that doesn't make a difference to me honest. I don't recommend shit so watch it. People like Alex, Sir_Didier_Drogba, Mandieta6 etc.. Couldn't bother with everyone but you guys know your movies. :P

I was waiting for it for a long time and it didn't disappoint.

Last good, good movie I watched...

Moonrise Kingdom. 10/10. Loved it.

Saw The Martian, really liked it, not mind blowing but extremely well shot and entertaining.

san andreas. it was poor at best, just until the moment alessandro daddario started running around with her wet body.

they tried to picture dwayne as a hero trying to save his family, but he was total jerk throughout the whole movie flying a rescue heli while people are dying around, and he only cared about his wife whose whereabouts were unknown. he ignored people calling for help on the way to her girl, and deliberately abandoner a perfectly functional aircraft for a crash land in city center )-

Straight Outta Compton - Loved it. Could have probably been an hour longer and I still would have enjoyed it. In fact I think they kinda rushed past the breakup, so more detail would have been nice. Also, groupies...

mortdecai - fun in all aspects. after the pirates of the carribean, depp plays just another captain Carlos sparrow, this time a modern time Carlos sparrow. gwyneth is awesome, she aged well, and other than that everything is just cool. and everything is very, very british. it's like sir Sir_Didier_Drogba has occupied the movie.

I watched two big sequels to childhood classics on the flight to Bangkok last week. Jurassic World and Terminator Genisys.

I found Genisys the much better movie. Mainly because it has Emilia Clarke, but also because I just found it slightly more original and interesting than Jurassic World - which was basically identical to every Jurassic Park movie before it. Man creates dinosaur. Corporation gets greedy. Some event means dinosaur escapes. Dinosaur is smarter than man gives credit. Dinosaur kills people. Hero saves the main cast - but plenty of other people that we don't care about die.

I actually didn't enjoy it that much - I saw it quite recently after seeing Grand Budapest Hotel, and Depp's performance felt almost like a thin parody of what Fiennes did in that movie. I think maybe my expectations of Depp became too high, when realistically he hasn't done anything good in years (in fact I am even starting to re-evaluate some of his original 'classic' performances and don't think they have aged well) - had this been a smaller movie with a smaller cast I probably would have found it to be perfectly decent entertaining fluff.

Lucy - Interesting and entertainment, but it's simply just another Hollywood movie. 3/5

Birdman : Or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) - A instant Classic. I'd never seen a movie shot in one plane. González Iñárritu is cinematic royalty. 5/5

It's not. There are many short black frames that allowed the director to cut the film into large chunks. Still cinematographically impressive but I thought it was ultimately distrscting and thus too gimmicky.

There is a Russian film that actually shot everything in one go and they did it in like 2 takes because the camera guy couldn't handle any more.

Yes, well still...the idea of the film being shot in one plane (even though it wasn't) is what deserves praise. It's a concept I'd heard of but never actually seen so for me it was refreshing and not distracting in the least bit.

The Martian. 4.5/5. Marks lost for being a bit too drippy on the whole US/ China collaboration thing, and not enough time spent capturing the full extent of what it would be like to be completely alone on a planet. Yes there was some but I guess I was hoping for a bit more examination of the psychological impact that would occur for someone in his position. Still, a good movie and glad I saw it. Certainly better than Pan was but then I wasn't going to that for myself.
