Manchester City have rejected Chelsea's bid for Shaun Wright-Phillips.

Chelsea were reported to have tabled an offer of £18 million for the England international as they look to lure him away from Eastlands, however it has been confirmed the bid was actually £20 million.

Despite the amount being larger, City still decided to shun the offer.

The Premiership champions have been linked with Wright-Phillips all summer as they look to bolster their squad.

City insists they do not want to sell the exciting winger and they have snubbed Chelsea's offer.

"Manchester City Football Club can confirm that we have received a bid from Chelsea for Shaun Wright-Phillips which has been immediately rejected," read a statement from City.

"We have always stressed that we want Shaun to stay at Manchester City and Shaun himself has always been adamant that he is happy here as the club continue to build on the excellent progress made under the leadership of Stuart Pearce.

"We do not encourage any bids for Shaun and both the club and the player remain firmly focused on our preparations for the new season."

Chelsea confirmed that they made an offer for Wright-Phillips in a statement: "Chelsea can confirm that an offer has been made to Manchester City for the transfer of Shaun Wright-Phillips. The terms of that offer are confidential.”

Wright-Phillips only signed a new deal at City last August and they are determined to keep hold of their prized asset.

The 23-year-old has always insisted he is happy at City, but it remains to be seen if Chelsea come back with a new improved offer after having their first bid rejected.

Chelsea is screwed now (well sort of). they shouldnt have splashed out so much cash in previous seasons because now teams will want a ridiculous sums of money for players (like Lyon asking for 45million Euro for Essien).

Ajax took 5 million for its biggest talent without any complaint while City fans want 30 million pounds for SWP? EPL players are overvalued it's not even funny.

And don't say because English teams can afford it because Manchester United paid less than 6 million for Park, far under his value.

SWP and Essien certainly aren't worth the asking price, but Chelsea brought it upon themselves. They've paid so much to other clubs that now it's become a formality for you to ask above 20 million for your best player when you do business with Chelsea.

They're stupid not to sell. I mean, no other team is going to dish out that kind of cash for SWP. Besides, they could pick up 2-3 decent/quality players with that kind of money.

Man C are £40m in debt & they know Chelsea will offer more. I'm guessing that they'll let him go for about £25m........way over-priced :nape:

Yeah, but that's Chelsea. But Newcastle ask 20 million pounds for Jermaine Jenas. The Saints rejected a 6.5 million pound bid on Crouch. Palace wants to sell Andy Johnson for 10 million. Scott Parker was 6.5 million pounds despite playing like 3 League Cup matches last year.

That's just ridicilous.

Homegrown talent coupled with the fact that Chelsea are the most serious/wealthy bidders vying for his services...................not all that surprising, actually.

Even though I hate Chelsea/Abromovich and what they've done to the game, I actually hope Lyon gets screwed with the Essien deal. A great talent, but they are asking double what any other team would offer, and now Houllier wants to make an agreement where Lyon gets to keep him another season because he knows this. I hope Chelsea just says f*ck off, and than next summer UTD or some other EPL team gets him for $15M.

Manchester City winger Shaun Wright-Phillips has asked for permission to speak to Chelsea.
The 23-year-old has made the request after skipping City's friendly with Macclesfield Town on Saturday afternoon.

Wright-Phillips was due to make his second pre-season appearance within 24 hours after featuring in Friday's friendly against Tranmere Rovers.

But despite taking to the pitch with his team-mates an hour before kick-off, Wright-Phillips was accompanied off by Stuart Pearce 10 minutes later.

City had initially claimed that Wright-Phillips was excused from the match due to illness but it now appears as though the wide man wants to discuss a move to Stamford Bridge.

Not too bothered about getting him or not, not to sound like an asshole. Yes, another winger is needed, but between Duff, a healthy (hopefully) Robben and Joe Cole I dont think its as big a necesscity as some fans feel. However, if he was signed, and Joe was moved into the center of park on a consistent basis, id be "chuffed" about it.

I'm no transfer guru, but with all the posturing Aulas and Houllier have done, being so obstenate about Essien staying there for the year, I dont see him leaving at all this summer. However, it just might yet screw them like you say: supposedly, in their preseaon game in Korea, Essien looked terrible before being sent off for a reckless ass tackle and many think its because of all the speculation surrounding him. If the rumors keep swirling about him into the beginning of the year and towards the winter transfer window, then his value might just be shot.

Then again, Arsenal could just swoop in and get him in the blink of an eye. I doubt Houllier would do Wenger any favors, but they likely have the cash and supposedly Essien's dream manager is Wenger the kiddylover. Go figure
