if FIFA is serious about their idea that the World Cup is about leaving behind a legacy, then they'd want 2018 in Russia ... the Americans are excited are about 2022 ...

no idea where in the world I'll be based in 8-12 years time, so it is difficult to want certain locations for access / time zone ... but I'd personally like to see Russia or Iberia for 2018, and either Qatar or Australia for 2022 ... though I won't mind 2018 in England -- actually kinda miss the chance to sing "it's coming home" (H) ... and USA 2022 would be fine too ...

Well, regarding the USA I'm just being selfish.

But England hasn't hosted a World Cup in 44 years and it's the birthplace of the game. The weather will be mild, or at least by comparison to everywhere else in the world, and the facilities are probably the best in the world. Security concerns aren't really there, the media potential will be enormous, as would the sponsorship potential.

well Russia has never hosted a World Cup ... and summer temperatures in non-Mediterranean Europe, including Russia, will be pleasant ... as for facilities, I can't see any basis for you thinking England are the best ...

security concerns are dealt with when the bid is submitted and when the bid country inspected, so that is taken care of for all bids ... and, fyi, England has not been terrorism-free in recent years ...

sponsorship packages are organized by FIFA, and they are always huge because the majority of it has to do with/on TV broadcasts and using the World Cup brand on product packaging ...

lastly, the only way "media potential" would be bigger in England is if you argue the language case: i.e. that English being the language of choice makes it a better vehicle ... which I would agree with, because we live in an anglophone world, and that is the only reason why English football developed more than any other league in 90s, as the reach of global broadcasting exploded ... this last reason weighs heavier on most fans' minds than it possibly should, but one has to accept reality ...

as I said, I wouldn't mind England, if only to be able to sing "it's coming home" really loudly once again (H) ... but FIFA is all about the legacy of the World Cup ... legacy is the "it" word for them ... and I have to agree with them about this legacy concept ...

that's why England selected only a few elite stadia (including the Olympic stadium), a few stadia from smaller Prem teams, and most importantly a few stadia to be re-developed / newly built for lower league sides, altogether covering key areas around the country ... it is because of the legacy factor that they didn't just pick the best stadia from the Prem, and dust their hands thinking they're done ... that's why the Prem being the commercially strongest club league in the world doesn't mean that FIFA consider it to be the strongest World Cup bid ...

but Russia stand the most to gain from getting the World Cup ... the exposure and the development of sporting and societal infrastructure is always huge for the event ... so in terms of legacy, they stand the most to gain ... and that's why Russia is a very strong bid, imo, and that's why I hope they get it ...

same goes for Qatar, as they would have the chance to redefine the Middle-East's image as the World focuses on them, and redefine stadium technology through what would have to be cutting edge science and/or engineering application, all this while putting themselves on the footballing map in terms of current and future development ... legacy!

I think Qatar could be kind of cool, but I would like to see them solve many of the weather problems before we actually give them the World Cup. I'm also worried about security and isn't that a pretty fundamentalist society? Could make the actual competition a little lamer than usual.

Qatar is just as "fundamentalist" as the UAE ... and yeah, the scientific research needed is part of the legacy I was talking about ...

Matey i agree what you said about the prem just picking and choosing which stadiums they think they should have,i think the only way of em winning this bid is showing fifa new stadiums.

I would love it if Australia, Korea or Japan wins the 2022 bid, solely for the selfish reason that it would be easier to get there from where i am at.

For as far as it matters my preference would go to Holland & Belgium (Duh! Not that it will ever happen) for 2018 and Australia for 2022.

Korea and Japan have already hosted, it would be a stupid idea to give only one of them the chance to host again.

BTW, Australia is the only bid country for either 2018/2022 without a guaranteed vote, and with the lack of an OFC vote too. We're in all likelyhood screwed. :(
