have we all forgotten 28th January already? Egypt tore the Ivorians apart that day ...

true Drogba didn't play that day, and that will count for a lot in the final, but lets not discount the Pharaohs here ... Abo Traika and Mohammed Barakat have had a superb tournament, and the team has had no problems creating and putting away their chances ...

I expect a close game ...

Every game has a story of it's own! The motivation now is bigger for the Ivorians, and Drogba is back...

This time, it will be very different...

Have you guys seen the refereeing in Egypt games? Man, was Portugal screwed in 2004 or what? How come we didn't have that as well?

So yeah, the best team will finish in second place.

ya i saw them ?what do u mean ?the only refree fault was against Senegal,& in that game Egypt were much better than Senegal & Egypt deserved to win..

against Libya, the refree was a total mess not with Egypt or Libya but against both..
the rest of Egypt games against Morocco, Cote D'Ivoire & DR Congo the refrees decisions didnt affect the matches results..

How can u say that the best team will finish in the 2nd place while u still didnt watch the match..
thats ridiculous, its like saying Cote D'Ivoire is better than Egypt just bcuz U want them to win..
look at the stats man..

Geez, you really sound like you're from Egypt or something.
Cote D'Ivoire has been the best team in this tournament, with the absolute star of the competition carrying the piano up front. Even if they lose the final (and I have a feeling they will) it won't change that fact.

that Senegal incident just came under greater notice since it was in the last minute of the semis ...

That is a HUGE mistake for the last minute of a semi-final. Don't make it a small thing. It is more dramatic and scandalous than anything I've seen in Korea 02'. I wonder what the ref had done if it had happened in the other goal...

As for Egypt deserving to win that game, yeah right, we also deserved to beat Greece, we all deserve to be millionaires too... Doesn't matter.

There is no way C.I. is gonna win this one.

Our national team is not that strong. And I admit that I'm amazed that we've reached the final. But I think it's all because of the support of fans. The players just can't lose infront of that crowd.

I just love it when some dude I've never seen before comes up and starts with the 'think before talk' comments.
So here we go, bit by bit:

Huge? no doubt. worse than Korea '02? sure.

but that's been the standard of refereeing at the tournament ... a number of penalty calls have been wrongfully waved away, fouls have been given when there weren't any ...

I agree the refereeing has been poor in the tournament, but that foul was a no-brainer. Really, what was the issue there for the ref? Was the atmosphere blocking his vision or something? It was one of the most obvious penalties not given I've ever seen, and boy, am I in the right country to see ghost penalties.

Xifio said:
my own country Zambia enjoyed favourable decisions, most especially against the Tunisians, where we seemed to be getting foul calls for falling over with minimal contact ...

That's great of you to reckon that. No irony here.

Xifio said:
the only reason you didn't hear about that is because it had no bearing on the result, and it was a group game ... the semifinal was a big match, and a last minute penalty call is no place to make a mistake, most especially if it would have taken the game into extra time ... of course it got noticed!

Urr, that's actually my point. The magnitude of that mistake - a semi-final, last minute, against the home nation, could have sent the match to OT - is completely different. That, and the fact it was an obvious foul, is what motivated my comments earlier.
And fortunately it got noticed. We would be in a different world if it didn't. It was the biggest mistake (so far) in the competition.

to say that the Egyptians have paid referees for preferential treament would be a gross error ... the repercussions of such an accusation, let alone if it was true, would be colossal ... in a year where match-fixing and referee corruption has rocked the footballing world, the possibility of such an occurrence would truly shake the foundations of FIFA ... at the minimum, the World Cup would be called off, since a FIFA-endorsed referee had no guarantee of being corruption free!

we should not be narrow-minded enough to think that we know everything, that either the Egyptian FA would attempt corruption or that FIFA referees had been paid by some private party ...

Well, Angela, I don't think the Egyptians have paid referees. To be honest, the simple fact of refereeing a match involving the host country, with so much at stake, with a roaring crowd, adrenaline up there, etc., must be a huge pressure, extremely hard to handle. I believe the ref saw the foul but he did not have the balls to call it. Many wouldn't. In fact, my first post referred exactly to this point, although I wrapped it all in (dubious) humour: we're had decent refereeing in the Euro2004, with Portugal's opponents getting fair calls all the way to the final.

Now you don't rush into conclusions and start calling people narrow-minded, Amelia, especially if you're taking the Conspiracy Theory road and ignore the simplest of explanations. That is being narrow-minded.

next time, please think about what you are saying before you do so ... in addition, think about this: if things are obvious to you, don't you think they might just be obvious to the real football brains running FIFA and the nationals FAs around the world?

Well, I'm sure Blatter would be thrilled to know you like to refer to him as his buddies as brains. What is obvious to me is I like Dr. Perry Cox.

Is anyone actually watching it right now?

It's still 0-0 with 60 minutes gone. According to the text, Egypt has been dominating the play

That means...the penalty was badly given...but he failed. Justice has been made.

I haven't seen the whole game...how was it?

Ahmed hassan missed the 2nd chance he got to score from the 11meter mark. The ref seems to have made a huge mistake....:S

Overall, both defenses are very solid, and Côte-d'Ivoire missed some 100% chances to score. And thank God Ahmad Hassan missed that PK. It was a terrible dive, clearly favoured to the host. We're like this in Africa.
