I don't think he's necessarily going out of his way to hog any sort of limelight, it's more that with what is going on, press are going to be asking him all sorts of stuff and he'll simply be replying. Then again that is a pretty bold statement

Thought article would have been spun in a certain way at first, but if you concentrate on the actual quotes, Lalas does come on as a bit of an ignoramus.

No, an adjective is used to describe a noun, as in, He's a pompous cock/ he's a pompous idiot, etc. You could also give up trying to insult him, and simply make the statement: He's pompous. Basically, there's no need for the comma, and I'm not exactly sure what cockbasket is, I'm guessing a noun?

None of the above. Alexi Lalas is an asshat and this is his idea of generating publicity for MLS and the LA Galaxy. He makes these sorts of comments in an effort to attract attention to the league, his club, and most importantly - to himself.
