Wenger cagey on Becks link
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has side-stepped reports linking him with David Beckham but insists he has not "tapped up" the England skipper.
Wenger last month appeared to hint that he may be interested in former Manchester United midfielder Beckham - but he stressed on Tuesday that he would only make a move for the 30-year-old through the correct channels.
"You want to accuse me of tapping up Beckham? It's completely wrong," he said after previous run-ins with the Spanish club over bids for Nicolas Anelka and Patrick Vieira.
"If I want a player at Real Madrid, you can be sure I will call them or they can call me. But if they want one of my players, they usually do not call. I would do it properly if I was interested."
Wolves defender Joleon Lescott is the latest name linked with Arsenal, although a central midfielder is not on the agenda, even though Edu has confirmed he is leaving Highbury this summer.
"I regret that (Edu leaving) as I feel we are losing a great player but we already have four central midfielders in Patrick Vieira, Gilberto, Cesc Fabregas and Mathieu Flamini," he said.
Another striker is a possibility - "if I find what I really want" - although it seems likely that Dennis Bergkamp will still earn a final one-year contract.
That could be a young target man, although his previous interest in Norwich striker Dean Ashton faltered as the ex-Crewe forward was not for sale at the time.
"Sometimes with five minutes to go, if you need to score a goal, it would be nice to have a player on a corner who heads it in," admitted Wenger.
"I want a young talent, maybe, if I find one. Not necessarily a big name."
